Platydoras striped very hardy and undemanding to the conditions of detention

The striped catfish platydoras (platydoras costatus) lives in the waters of South America. It belongs to the armored family, therefore its body is covered with rigid plates. On each side grow sharp thorns.

On the head are two dark mustaches.

Under natural conditions, individuals grow up to 20 cm. In an aquarium, their size does not exceed 15 cm.

Notable coloring fish: light and dark streaks stretch from head to tail. The pattern loses its expression with age.

The shape of the body is elongated, cylindrical. The stomach is flat.

The name platydoras comes from two words: “platys” is smooth and “doras” is skin. Representatives of this species can often be confused with the long-nosed catfish. Distinctive features:

  • the length of the muzzle is longer for the long-nosed catfish;
  • adipose fin – in Platydoras it is not so elongated;
  • the color – in the long-nosed catfish it is more spotted.

Striped aquarium catfish are growing rapidly, and therefore they need to choose a tank with a volume of about 150 liters. This species leads a near-bottom lifestyle., therefore, he needs large areas for swimming. It is better to give preference to rectangular aquarium with a lid.

This solution allows you to grow a large number of plants.

Water temperature should not exceed + 27 ° С and be lower than + 22 ° С. Acidity 5−7 pH.

The ideal medium would be neutral without salts. In Russia, almost all striped catfish are grown by local aquarists.

Such individuals are more adapted to local water. They calmly tolerate short-term supercooling and other parameter fluctuations.

Some water changes every week. Fine sand or round pebbles will be suitable as soil.

Be sure to set different snags and plants. They dim the lights and provide an opportunity to hide under them.

Platidoras striatum has good compatibility with large and medium fish. Because of thick armor and spikes, predator attacks are not terrible to them. Some inhabitants of the aquarium also love shelters, and because of this, there may be conflicts with catfish, so you need to provide the houses of all the fish.

Well coexist with cichlids, scalars, goldfish and gourami.

They pick up food from the bottom, so it’s better to give them granules or tablets. Due to lack of appetite control, catfish are prone to obesity, so you need to monitor the size of their abdomen.
