Kalamoiht Kalabarsky or snake fish in the home aquarium

Hello dear readers! Slow flowing and warm water bodies of the countries of West Africa are considered the birthplace of the Calabar Kalamoihta.

The fish can live in brackish water and fresh. In addition, the kalamoihta has one unique feature – it can survive without problems in water with low oxygen content and even withstand some time outside the aquatic environment.

In a fish, the lungs can equally absorb oxygen from both the water and the atmosphere.

The body of the calamoiht is serpentine and long, covered with scales from above. The diameter of the scales to one and a half centimeters. The body of the fish is colored yellow-brown.

The head of a triangular shape, a large mouth with teeth. On the body there are from 8 to 15 spines, which are located on the back near the tail. But the pelvic fins are either not at all, or they are located on the back of the body.

Due to its extraordinary appearance, the fish looks like a snake. The organs of touch of the calamoiht of Calabari are the whiskers. But there are no pronounced sexual differences in the fish.

Males are somewhat slimmer than females and the difference in the number of rays on the anal fin. In males from 12 to 14 rays, and in females to 9. But you will not count rays when you buy fish in a store.

In nature, the fish grows up to 40 centimeters in length, but in the aquarium it is not such a giant.

Calabar guest is a rather curious and peaceful fish. What is strange, despite its size, the smaller neighbors can scare him when feeding.

Snake fish is considered a night dweller, but you can teach him to go out from the shelter during the day to eat. It is very useful in the aquarium to keep floating plants (riccia and pistiya). In them, the fish will often retire.

As neighbors for kalamoihta you can plant medium-sized peaceful fish. In no case do not add neon, rasbor, guppy, because they will go as feed.

Get ready for the fact that your large pet will poke around in the aquarium soil, so if you want to protect the root system of plants, enclose them around with large roots. As a substrate, you can take sand or fine polished gravel.

For the content of one individual African guest you need water from 100 liters volume. You will also need to worry about creating as many shelters of all kinds as possible.

Cover the aquarium tightly with a lid so that the fish cannot jump out. The water in the aquarium should have the following parameters:

  • hardness: 2-17 dH;
  • acidity: pH 6.0-7.5;
  • temperature: 22-28 degrees.

A key factor in the chemical composition of water is its stability. To accelerate the adaptation of fish in the new conditions, it is necessary to use stresscoat, acclimol and biopolis. They can also be used when the fish need a water change.

If your pets are sick, then you should be aware that Kalamoicht does not tolerate salting of water, organic dyes and formalin. In aquas, it is imperative to install filtration and aeration + to replace about 20% of water with fresh water every week.

You can feed the fish with any type of food: frozen sea fish, insects, bloodworms, small crustaceans. If you keep kalamoihtov in the general aquarium, then very often they remain hungry, because they do not keep up with a bunch of other hungry mouths. In this case, you will need to take a tube of diameters of 3 centimeters and lower it to the bottom of the aquarium.

This tube will need to deliver food to the bottom. The snake fish will soon find a treat and will surely eat it.

Mature kalamoh will be three years of age. I would like to note that if you breed fish in artificial conditions, it is very difficult to encourage fish to spawn. On spawning of this aquatic inhabitant there is little information at all.

But in the history of aquarism, there have been cases when a fish spawned in aquarium conditions and without pricks of hormonal preparations.

Basically, snake fish is brought from countries where it is distributed. When you buy, carefully examine the fish.

It is not recommended to take individuals on which there are light fringe, matte spots. Fringe is a consequence of the breeding of flatworm parasites. It is very important to examine the throat.

If it is inflamed or swollen, then the fish suffered a move and recently burned the throat with oxygen. It is better to choose those individuals that move easily around the aquarium and do not push them to the surface of the aquarium, as this symptom indicates a violation of the functions of the swim bladder.

It is believed that for the survival of a small fish, it is not enough to use the branchial respiration when breathing oxygen in water. But healthy fish will not constantly float to the surface to take a breath of air.

Frequent surfacing of fish to the surface suggests that either it is sick, or the hydrochemical composition of aquarium water does not suit it.
