How much does an average shark weigh: whale, tiger, white and other species

For many, the idea of sharks as a huge ruthless creatures formed on the basis of films. But this view is not entirely correct.

On average, there are over 450 species of these fish, most of which are not dangerous to humans. Such a variety does not allow to unequivocally answer how much a shark weighs.

To find out, you have to get acquainted with the largest and smallest representatives.

The statement that sharks are dangerous is fundamentally wrong, most of the species are innocuous

Sharks are one of the largest marine and oceanic inhabitants. For example, the World Ocean is the residence of the whale shark, the largest living species of these fish.

But the Guinness Book of Records gives primacy to an individual that lived on Earth in the prehistoric period from 23 to 2.6 million years ago. We are talking about Carcharodon Megalodon, whose length was up to 18 m, width – up to 2 m. The average weight of a shark megalodon reached as much as 50 tons.

  • Arctic Greenland;
  • big white;

Sharks are the biggest fish in all the oceans of our planet.

  • tiger;
  • hammer;
  • fox;
  • large-pelagic;
  • six-knife;
  • mako.

    The huge whale shark, oddly enough, is very harmless and feeds mainly on plankton. The average length is 12–15 m, the largest representatives reach a width of up to 2 m. In order to understand how much a whale shark weighs, one should consider the average and largest figure of the species. So, average weight is 15 tons, the largest, registered in March 1994, was 36 tons.

    But in the history there are many references to the stories of sailors and fishermen who allegedly met giant whale weighing at least 40 tons. True, all this remained unconfirmed.

    It should also take into account the difference in the average mass of the southern and northern representatives. Southern are called individuals living in the warm waters of the tropics and subtropics.

    Their mass is estimated at 12−17 tons. Under the north refers to representatives living, respectively, in the northern latitudes. They are a bit smaller than the southern ones — their weight reaches 7–12 tons.

    The second largest shark – giant (giant) – as well as whale, very friendly. It feeds on plankton and small fish.

    The average length of this giant – 9−12 m, weight – 14.5 tons. By the way, the giant is the heaviest in British waters.

    Greenland is the slowest shark., living in the cold waters of the North Atlantic. It is very difficult to see it even during deep-sea diving. The average length – 6−7 m, weight – 1−1.5 m.

    These huge fish vary in size, speed of movement and food preferences.

    The fastest shark call the big white – especially famous shark representative. The view gained its fame thanks to numerous films, which tell about the aggressiveness and bloodthirstiness of these fish.

    Despite its reputation, white prefers to eat other marine life and rarely attacks people. In addition, the species belongs to the endangered, the population has only 3.5 thousand individuals. The weight of such fish is 1.2-3.3 tons, the average length is 4-5 meters.

    Most dangerous to humans consider tiger shark. The name of the species was due to the color resembling the stripes of a tiger.

    These individuals live in all oceans with warm water. The average length is 5 m. Speaking about how much a tiger shark weighs, experts call the figure 939 kg.

    Other shark representatives are somewhat lighter than those listed above. The weight of the hammerhead shark is 0.8–0.85 t, the fox is 0.5 t, the six-tailed shark is 0.5–0.6 t, the mako is 0.54 t.

    Interesting, but not all sharks look like most people used to imagine. For example, a bearded wobbegong species living in shallow water off the coast of Australia has a variegated color and characteristic fringe, which provides it with an excellent disguise among corals.

    Another curious species – the angelfish, living in the temperate waters of the Atlantic, has an unusual flattened body.

    Surprisingly, it is precisely the miniature species of sharks that are larger than the larger ones, although the interest in small individuals is much lower. The smallest representative most scientists call Etmopterus perryi (etmopterus perry). For the first time the mention of this baby appeared in the journal of the American ichthyology society “Copeia” in 1985.

    The first specimens were discovered in 1964 by ichthyologists, researchers George Burgess and Stuart Springer.

    Small sharks are quantitatively larger than large ones, but they cause a little less interest.

    Interestingly, etmopterus has photophores, which means it can emit a glow. The length of these mini-fishes is slightly larger than the human palm, the average length of the females is about 15.5 cm, the males are 17 cm. Body weight is only 200 g.

    Other miniature types:

    • dwarf prickly;
    • Indian tape;
    • dwarf feline;
    • light-tailed

    Some of the smallest shark species are no larger than the human palm.

    Thus, speaking of the weight of sharks, it is impossible to name any one figure. Their weight can vary from 0.2 to 36 thousand kg, which is easily explained by the large variety of species of these amazing fish.
