Hoplias Malabarsky: rules for keeping and breeding in an aquarium

Malabar Hoplias refers to fish that breathe atmospheric air, called haracoids. This interesting fish grows up to 60 centimeters in length, which is why lovers do not favor it in their home aquariums.

Malabar Hoplias comes from a vast region that stretches from the waters of Panama to Brazil.

The first Hopliases brought to the Union date back to 1990, which entered our aquarist without any signs of life. During transportation, the bag burst and almost all the water flowed out of it. However, the fish was still able to breathe, the body lost its elasticity, and the color remained the same.

Thanks to timely assistance (a warm bath with the addition of salt 1 g per liter of water and methylene blue 3 mg per liter of water), the fish became as good as new after three days.

Hopliasy reach sexual maturity at the age of 3 years, when the body length will be at least 20 centimeters. The males have a more slender and sagacious body, the dorsal fin is fan-shaped. During spawning periods, the color of the fish brightens, and the dark bar almost disappears.

The sides of the females have a golden sheen, in males – silver. Spawning is carried out on the ground. As a rule, the male builds a nest among dense vegetation or nearby tree roots.

Fish spawn again after a couple of months.

If the dilution is carried out in conditions of captivity, then without pituitary injections to achieve positive results will not succeed. The fecundity of females ranges from 400 to 800 eggs.

At the end of spawning, the female must be transplanted into another container or separated from the nest with glass. The protection and care of the clutch is done exclusively by males, who will throw even the shadow of your hand, flashed near his shelter.

It is better not to touch the hands of an aquarium during the periods of care for the Hoplias caviar, because the bite of this fish is rather painful and the wound may not live for a long time.

Larvae hatching occurs after one and a half to two days, and a week later the fry begin to swim independently in the aquarium. Starter feed for fry of the Malabar Hoplias – fine core, cyclops, artemia and moin.

With proper care and abundant feeding at one month of age, the fry will have a length of about 3 centimeters.

Unfortunately, due to the bad nature of the Hoplias, it is better not to keep with small peaceful aquarium fish. In addition, these fish are characterized by a manifestation of intraspecific aggression, as evidenced by characteristic lacerated wounds in the body.

However, despite the solid injuries, the skin rather quickly regenerates.

The content of the Malabar Hoplias is as follows:

  • The rigidity of the aquarium water – 20 – 25 degrees;
  • Active reaction 6.0 – 7.8 pH;
  • Water temperature is 20 – 32 degrees Celsius;
  • Active filtration and aeration of water;
  • The minimum volume of the aquarium is 400 liters for a pair of fish.
  • The maximum lifespan of a hydrobiont is about 15 years.
