maintenance, care, compatibility

The first began to breed these beautiful creatures of the Chinese and Koreans. Then they conquered the Japanese in the 16th century, and in the 17th century the Portuguese and the Dutch brought goldfish to Europe.

Homeland aquarium fish guppies.

In the wild, these creatures inhabit the waters of Brazil, Venezuela, and they are also found in Guiana, on the islands of Trinidad and Barbados. For the first time physicians paid attention to them.

It turns out that these fish eat the larvae of anopheles mosquitoes, significantly reducing the population of these dangerous insects in their region.

Homeland aquarium fish catfish.

Golden catfish, tiger and speckled came to us from South America (Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay). Som shifter appeared in Africa (region of the Congo River). But there is also a unique transparent fish – glass catfish.

These creatures came to Europe from Hindustan, Sumatra and Burma.

Homeland aquarium fish gourami.

This type of fish lives in Southeast Asia (Sumatra, Java, Thailand, Vietnam). The first who began to actively engage in acclimatization gourami, trying to teach them to the climate of Europe, was a French aquarist and naturalist Pierre Carbonier.

Homeland of aquarium fish angelfish.

To see these creatures in the wild, you will have to go to the shores of Orinoco and Amazon, or take a walk along the largest river of Guyana – Essequibo. Angelfish do not like the fast flow and adore the reservoirs covered with thickets.

To describe all the aquarium fish and tell where their distant homeland is located is simply impossible. The number of species of these amazing creatures exceeds 21 thousand! Those lovers who are interested in this article can find more information in reference books or catalogs.

Only on the example of the five most common species, you will easily understand how wide the geography of the origin of the creatures that inhabit your aquariums is.

The role of the aquarium in the apartment is interesting: a piece of the water element, placed in the interior of the citizen’s dwelling, is an excellent element of decor, as well as a means for relaxation after a busy day full of stress. Aquarium fish, embodied in your apartment in miniature, will bring you a lot of joy.

But when starting an aquarium, it is important to understand what types of aquarium fish will live in it and how.

Leafing through the catalog, delving into the photo and names of aquarium fish, first of all, you should decide on the purpose of the upcoming purchase: do you want to engage in breeding or start an aquarium of aesthetic motives?

Breeding takes a lot of time and effort, as certain species of aquarium fish require special conditions for reproduction. You also need to find out under what conditions a particular species of aquarium fish will acquire the desired external parameters (the appearance and temperature of water, lighting, and the nature of food can significantly influence the appearance).

Creating an “underwater world” with an aesthetic goal is a somewhat different task from selection. Here you are primarily in the help of catalogs, in which various types of aquarium fish in pictures are presented.

However, here, studying photos and descriptions of aquarium fish, you should choose the inhabitants of the aquarium, which require similar conditions of detention and are not part of each other’s food chain. Failure to follow these principles will lead to disease and death of fish.

Many years of work of aquarists and breeders have led to the fact that all the names of aquarium fish can not be mentioned even in the volume brochure. Therefore, below we provide a table that includes a brief description of the most common individuals.

In order to have less discord in your tank, its inhabitants should not be cramped. For each fish up to 5 cm in size it is necessary to have 8-10 liters of aquarium volume, 10 cm in size – 15-20 liters, over 15 cm – 25-30 liters.

These figures are not “the truth of last resort” and are given with a certain margin, but they should not be exceeded. Do not forget that plants and soil in your tank also take up some space.

Remember that some species of aquarium fish can produce offspring only if there are no “alien” neighbors around at all. In other words, there is often a situation where a certain type of aquarium fish, capable of living in a common aquarium, breeds only in a “species” domestic pond.

No matter how much you like the photos and the names of the aquarium fish from the catalog, new pets cannot be moved into the general aquarium if they are incompatible with those that already live in your home pond.

You can create a set of fish for the aquarium yourself using the table below.

Also a good solution would be to use one of the time-tested sets of aquarium fish.

Probably one of the most popular fish that can be seen by going to any zoomogazin or even to the market, are all your favorite guppies. Small in size, with a large tail and bright color – they immediately attract attention.

In addition, many species of guppies are among the first inhabitants of aquariums, both among beginners and experienced aquarists. Breeding and maintenance of these fish is so simple that in most cases it becomes a favorite hobby.

Consider these fish in more detail.

The historical homeland of guppies are islands located in South America, Venezuela, Brazil. These fish live in fresh, unpolluted and flowing water. But sometimes they can be seen and coastal waters without admixture of sea salt in them.

As for food, such fish prefer live food, namely bloodworms, larvae and small insects.

Given their passion for small insects, some aquarists even inhabit certain areas containing a large number of anopheles mosquito, so that guppies can destroy its larvae. In addition, these fish have a clear division into males and females.

As a rule, males have a more pronounced appearance than females.

As a rule, these fish do not have any difficulties with breeding in captivity. And this is not at all surprising, given that the females of guppies belong to viviparous fishes. So, the fry born into the world, photos of which cannot but please, are forced to hide from other inhabitants of the aquarium at first.

But after a dangerous period, they are actively involved in the underwater life in the aquarium. As for certain requirements for stimulating the guppy to breeding, then it is worth noting the constant availability of clean water, abundant food and, of course, the presence of a male and female.

But remember that parents can become the cause of the death of their children, successfully eating them without the presence of natural protection in the form of vegetation or accumulation of stones.

Its name – these fish were in honor of the man who first discovered and made public this discovery to the world community. His name was Robert Guppy. There was such a significant event on the island of Trinidat back in the year 66.

To date, there are a huge number of varieties of these fish, each of which has its own distinctive features. Consider some species of guppy in more detail.

Aquarium fish guppies delight owners with a docile nature and a spectacular appearance, and while keeping them in an apartment or house, they are easy to care for.

Keeping and caring for guppies at home does not imply strict monitoring of temperature, hardness and oxygen saturation of water. But there are optimal values of the parameters at which the fish feel like they are in their native element.

By the way, they come from Latin American waters. Under adverse conditions, the fish may well survive, but development will be suspended.

Volumetric aquarium should allow guppies to freely frolic, and for this you need 1.5 liters of liquid medium per individual.

Should not be misleading and miniature size of fish: they are able to quickly stir up the water with waste products. Habitat pollution threatens pets, and bringing the ecosystem into proper form will require a filtration system or a weekly procedure for partial replacement of water by about 10% weekly.

The maintenance of aquarium guppies will be most favorable if you follow the rules of care. They are simple, but the standard assumes regularity and consistency in several ways:

  1. Acidity. The acidity of 6.7 pH is the most pleasing to the fish and will allow it to develop in accordance with the program of the inherent nature, producing offspring.
  2. Rigidity. Stiffness is most acceptable in the range of 4-10 ° dH, which corresponds to the average softness of the aquatic environment.
  3. Lighting. Sunlight access during the daytime is desirable, but not more than 12 hours. Constant artificial lighting is harmful to small fish, they grow dull and lose the ability to reproduce.
  4. Priming. Guppies are unpretentious to the quality of the soil, so it is selected in accordance with the algae with which the aquarium will be decorated, but with an eye to quick and effective cleaning. The presence of salts is also taken into account in order not to excessively increase the acidity of the liquid medium.
  5. Seaweed. Guppy care will be more fruitful if Indian fern is present among the algae. Especially vegetation is relevant when the appearance of offspring. Fry should have a place where they hide from individuals that tend to treat them as food.
  6. Temperature. Resistant fish can survive at a temperature of 4 degrees, but you shouldn’t be tempted by fate; it’s merciful to keep this figure within 26–28 degrees Celsius.
  7. Feed. Guppies are not particularly capricious in food, and their omnivorousness is comparable to the voraciousness, which may not be to their advantage, since overeating is fraught with diseases. Therefore, overfeeding is undesirable. Food is better to buy to increase the variety of substances needed by the body. It is desirable to expand the diet, alternating flaky food for tropical fish with small shrimps, bloodworms, pea husks and thinly sliced lettuce.

Breeding

The maintenance of the viviparous guppy in the aquarium during the breeding season requires special care methods, as the individuals are prone to cannibalism. It should be noted that the anal area is red and there was a spot.

The best way to take care of the fry will be to move them to a free tank.

The maintenance and care of the young guppy fish during breeding is especially scrupulous at the initial stage of development. Kids do not have immunity to the environment, in connection with which the previously listed most acceptable conditions for the acidity and hardness of the environment are especially carefully monitored. To feed the fry you need dry food several times a day.

And when the fish stretch to about 2 cm, they are ready for life in the aquarium, where they should be sent.

Feeding aquarium cardinals must be correct: balanced, diverse. This fundamental rule is the key to successful keeping of any fish, be it guppies or astronotuses.

Article “How and how much to feed aquarium fish” talks in detail about this, it outlines the basic principles of the diet and feeding regime of fish.

In this article, we note the most important thing – feeding fish should not be monotonous; both dry and live food should be included in the diet. In addition, you need to take into account the gastronomic preferences of a particular fish and, depending on this, include in its diet ration either with the highest protein content or vice versa with vegetable ingredients.

Popular and popular feed for fish, of course, are dry food. For example, hourly and everywhere can be found on the aquarium shelves of food company “Tetra” – the leader of the Russian market, in fact, the range of feeds of this company is striking. In the “gastronomic arsenal” of Tetra are included as individual feeds for a certain type of fish: for goldfish, for cichlids, for loricarids, guppies, labyrinths, arovan, discus, etc.

Also, Tetra has developed specialized foods, for example, for enhancing color, fortified or for feeding fry. Detailed information on all Tetra feeds, you can find on the official website of the company – here.

It should be noted that when buying any dry food, you should pay attention to the date of its production and shelf life, try not to buy food by weight, and also keep the food in a closed state – this will help avoid the development of pathogenic flora in it.
