Haplochromis – Rock Cribensis: keeping and breeding in an aquarium

Lake Victoria is one of the largest reservoirs in Africa, in which an unreal number of fish species dwell, the lion’s share of which are fishes from the tsikhlovy family. Haplochromis “Rock Kribensis” is considered one of the most attractive fish found in this lake.

In fact, it is a native of several countries: Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.

Like the vast majority of fish from the genus Haplokhromis, this fish until today has no definite scientific name. Males are famous for their bright color, which is dominated by red color. In nature and in an aquarium, a fish does not grow more than 12 centimeters in length.

Red color begins to spread from the belly with a body length of about 5 centimeters. Males also have “caviar spots”.

The color of the females is much more modest and they look almost the same.

I would like to note that the color mostly depends on the conditions and habitat. Accordingly, if you want pets to be healthy, they must eat well, be kept clean and receive high-quality food. There was one experiment where several aquarists kept these fish under various conditions.

In the end, each aquarist received individuals with different color options. If you compare the Haplochromis “Rock Kribensis” with other cichlids that incubate the eggs in the mouth, this species is less aggressive.

In order to have peace and grace in the aquarium, this cichlid needs to be maintained with cichlid neighbors of the same size and habits. Another proven option to reduce the number of clashes between fish, contain a small number of males, preferably two less than females.

But, if you keep in a small aquarium a pair of large sexually mature males, be prepared for the fact that they will fight each other.

In terms of feeding, the cichlid is unpretentious and feeds on almost everything that an aquarist gives. It is recommended to give in large quantities of feed of plant origin.

In this case, your pets will have a bright and beautiful color. The contents of this cichlid are as follows:

  • Water hardness 10 – 15 degrees;
  • The active reaction medium 7 – 8 pH;
  • Water temperature 24 – 26 degrees;
  • The presence of good filtration and aeration of the aquarium.

Some aquarium sources indicate that there is no problem with the breeding of these fish. However, this is an erroneous statement. In comparison with other members of the family of African Lakes, it is much more difficult to stimulate spawning in this haplochromis.

You need high-quality and balanced feeding and water of adequate quality.

There is an opinion that females who grew up in conditions with artificial incubation of caviar, maternal instinct disappears. The experience of the content of this haplochromis shows that this negative point can be avoided if you select from the female fry every week. In specialized aquarium sources, you can find information that while the female incubates the eggs in her mouth, she will not eat anything.

This is an erroneous statement. If you look closely at the behavior of the female, then you will notice how she picks up small types of food.

This does not prevent her from losing weight heavily, but avoids dystrophy with interest.

Quite often, the feed that we feed our fish every day is unsuitable for feeding haplochromis. Accordingly, you should regularly experiment with different types of feed.

Most likely, under natural conditions, the diet of haplochromis is changing dramatically.
