Guppy Aquarium Fish Content

maintenance, care, compatibility

Guppi (lat. Poecilia reticulata) is an aquarium fish that is known even to people who are very far from aquaria, to say nothing of amateurs.

Perhaps, every aquarist at least once in his life contained a couple of gupas, and many started their journey with them, and even now they contain luxurious, selective guppy species. To answer all the questions about them, you probably need to write a book, but we will try to consider especially popular ones.

Males of guppies of different breeds

The homeland of the guppy fish is Trinidad and Tobago, and in South America, in Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil. As a rule, they live in clean, running water, but also like brackish coastal waters, but not saline sea water. They feed on worms, larvae, bloodworms and various small insects.

Because of this peculiarity, they even began to be massively colonized in areas where there is a lot of anopic mosquito, as guppies eat its larvae. The males of guppies in nature are much brighter than the females, but still their coloring is far from aquarium breeding forms.

She must protect them from predators, as the fish is small and defenseless.
Wild guppies in nature:

Guppy fish are named after their discoverer (Robert John Lechmere Guppy). Robert Guppy was the first to find and describe this fish on Trinidad Island in 1866.

Like all tropical fish, guppies love warm waters (22–25 ° C), but can live in the wider limit of 19.0–29.0 ° C. As for the parameters of water, for ordinary forms it is almost irrelevant. They adapt to local conditions so quickly that they can transfer to a new aquarium without any problems at all.

It would be ideal if the aquarium will have: 7.0 – 8.5, and a stiffness of 12.0 – 18.0, but the parameters can be completely different, which will not prevent the guppy from living and breeding.

The aquarium may be small, 20 liters will be enough for 5 fish. But, the greater the volume, the greater the number of fish you can keep and the more beautiful it will look.
It is best to have a lot of plants in the aquarium, as this will be similar to the natural habitat and will significantly increase the survival rate of the fry in the general aquarium. Lighting can be any, from bright to twilight.

It is advisable to use a filter, for gupeshek quite internal enough, but if there is an external, then great. Only it is better to close the holes in it with an additional small net, since a powerful filter is not only capable of sucking the fry, but even an adult fish.

Guppies cannot be called a schooling fish, but there is almost no point in keeping it with a pair. It is very small in size and in small quantities is almost invisible in an aquarium.

For guppies, the rule is simple – the more there are in the aquarium, the more impressive and beautiful they look.

Of course, you can keep a few fish in a 3-liter jar, but they will be cramped and uncomfortable there.

For example, if it is planned to settle no more than 15 individuals, then a 30-liter aquarium is enough.

Priming and decorative items can be selected such that they will like. It should not be forgotten about aquarium plants: they not only produce the necessary oxygen, but also serve as shelter for fry from adult fish.

Temperature water can vary from 18 to 30 degrees. However, 24 degrees is the best option for healthy development and reproduction.

To maintain this temperature, it is advisable to purchase a special heater in the pet store for an aquarium that has a water heating regulator.

Artificial lighting in the dark is optional. However, experienced guppy lovers still install additional lighting.

Thanks to him, algae grow better and the colors of the fish become much brighter and richer.

To maintain the aquarium in a tidy condition, it is enough to change one third of the water from the total volume once a month. Before that, it is desirable to defend it in an open container for several days.

Guppies love hard water (from 6 to 10 units), however, if we consider the quality of tap water, it is better to get rid of excess sediment. It should be remembered that inject water into the aquarium only at room temperature.

Otherwise, such abrupt changes in the aquatic environment can lead to disruption of the development of fish or even weakening of the immune system and the appearance of diseases.

If we are very lazy to care for the aquarium and do not change the water, it is advisable to install a compressor. He perfectly cope with the purification of water from the remnants of food and other dirt, thereby it will get rid of unnecessary trouble.

There is no point in setting an aerator for saturating water with air, except for beauty, you can hold special tubes at the bottom of the aquarium that allow bubbles. Guppies are undemanding to oxygen, so it is enough to plant some algae in the ground.

Plants absorb carbon dioxide and give the aquarium natural beauty.

Guppy – the most common type of aquarium inhabitants. These colorful fish with large iridescent tail. Often, talking about his hobby, experienced aquarists say that let them begin with her purchase.

In addition, guppies are ideal test subjects for studying genetic mutations. Males of this species are much larger and more beautiful than females.

Their tails are much larger than those of females, and differ in their original, unusual coloring. The small size of the fish – from 1.5 to 3 cm allows you to make them the center of the aquarium world.

Females are much larger – about 6 cm, but have not such a beautiful color. Today, with the help of selection, beautiful individuals of females have been obtained, but their cost is much higher.

You can see the possible fish options in the photo, which is full of internet.

Aquarium guppies are ideal for beginner breeders. It is so easy to care for them that a child can cope with it. For their breeding, an aquarium of 15 – 35 liters for 6-8 pieces is enough.

This aquarium has a very small size, so is ideal for small children’s rooms. In addition, you can save space due to the fact that you do not need to provide the fish with additional filtration of water – they have enough fresh plants, but be prepared that you will have to clean the water and the soil more often.

Do not ignore the additional lighting. But due to the fact that the aquarium is small, it will be enough for a table lamp in the evening. In food, fish is picky.

For its feeding, you can use industrial feed from a jar bought in the nearest store. Dry feeds are also enjoyed by them.

This type of aquarium dwellers attracts those who are forced to constantly leave home. Guppies easily tolerate weekly breaks, so no need to ask friends to constantly come and feed your inhabitants. Constant overfeeding, on the contrary, can kill young stock.

Overeating fish begin to die. From the above, we can conclude that the breeding of aquarium guppies are not troublesome and not expensive.

In addition, the aquarium – it is very beautiful. If you place a different decor on the bottom, you can create real masterpieces, capture them in the photo and show off to friends and companions

The most common types of caudal fins are:

Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are small variegated fish that belong to the Family of the Sutyliae. Natural habitat – the reservoirs of Latin America, where the polluted water literally “taught” them to get used to the difficult living conditions. In recent decades, they love to settle in the aquarium due to the high level of adaptation and survival.

The low cost of organizing a tropical garden in the house, and unpretentious maintenance have led to the fact that guppies are often bought even for children.

It is visually easy to determine the sex of a guppy. Males grow in length 2-4 cm, have a bright color and a long tail.

Females are slightly larger – up to 6 cm in length, have a short tail with small spots. On the stomach there is a dark spot.

Care for guppy fish does not have specific features: you do not need to buy an expensive aquarium with high-class equipment or create special conditions for keeping fish. All that is needed for fish life at home is:

  1. Aquarium or water can;
  2. Fish food;
  3. Filter;
  4. Daylight lamp;
  5. Large aquarium sand and stones;
  6. Plants.

Instructions for preparing an aquarium for the settlement of fish is very simple. Purebred guppy fish will feel great in an aquarium of at least 50 liters with a water acidity of at least 6.6-7 pH.

For simple guppies, you will need running tap water, which is best to insist for 24 hours and pass through an aqua filter. The water temperature is preferably at least 18 ° C, otherwise the fish will fall ill.

24-26 ° C – the optimum temperature. At temperatures above the permissible level, the fish become smaller and do not live long.

Watch a short video on how to care for guppies.

Guppies are highly active, so it’s better to keep the aquarium closed so that they don’t jump out. Cover the bottom of the aquarium with large river sand, small stones and small bushes of plants in which fish can play and hide.

For thoroughbred guppies, special settings are needed that will filter the water, saturate it with the necessary amount of oxygen. One should not forget about the lighting – alternately combining the light of the sun and the lamp.

Full care for aquarium inhabitants is impossible without proper feeding. A large amount of guppy food will not be eaten, it can settle at the bottom of the aquarium, spoiling the water. Do not neglect the live food: you can give artemia, rotifers, mosquito larvae and daphnia.

It is better to feed once a day, dividing the portions into several chips with an interval of several hours. Modern fish food will help maintain an optimal balance of vitamins and minerals in the body.

Alternate live and dry food so that the fish do not have disorders of the digestive system.

Guppies breed easily in an aquarium. Caring for producers during the spawning period does not require special preparation. There are a few points to consider to avoid trouble.

Fish become adults at the age of 4 months. When a female has an angular belly, then she is ready for childbirth. Transfer it to a separate aquarium or a jar of water, after the appearance of the babies, the female can be transplanted back.

In order to avoid cannibalism, it is better to keep fry in spawning until puberty. The first feed – shredded daphnia and cyclops.

At 2-3 months of life, you can give live food.

Do not forget to maintain cleanliness in the aquarium. Complete care requires the removal of food residues and the replacement of 1/3 of the water weekly.

New water should be the same in temperature and acidity as the main one. To avoid disease, periodically add 1 teaspoon of salt (per 10 liters of water) to water.

Guppies are in good contact with small fish, but they can be aggressive to the fry, or become victims of large fish. For general safety, it is better to keep them in groups of several individuals in the same aquarium.

Guppies are unpretentious fish that can live without aeration and filtration of water. These are viviparous animals, like sharks, although they are distant relatives, their care is very simple.

What else should you pay attention to before preparing a guppy settlement, and after? First, pick a big can – the bigger the better.

Secondly, do not use old glass jars or plastic bottles that already emit toxic substances. Thirdly, it is difficult to place a filter in small jars, so all the “dirty” work will have to be done personally — wipe the inside surface of the container with a clean sponge, siphon the bottom, and replace the old water with fresh water every week.

Fourth – do not put the jar or aquarium in place of direct sunlight. This can lead to water bloom and the death of animals.

Fifth – with the help of a thermometer monitor the temperature.

Care for such fish is a pleasure! Even a novice aquarist will not be afraid to admit that the first experience of keeping fish is associated with guppies.

Simple species are less whimsical than breeding species that require strict maintenance. In any case, these cute creatures are a real aquarium miracle.

The content of guppy fry is possible in a specially prepared jigger. It is recommended to take a glass container with a volume of 20-50 liters – in such a tank, caring for young fish will not cause trouble to the aquarist. Water should be taken from the general aquarium, where these fish were born.

Often there are reports that the guppy fry died after running into the pit. This is due to the fact that the water in it was unsuitable parameters.

Undercoat, stones and snags are optional, because they do not simplify the care of a guppy brood.

See how to make a simple otsadnik for fry with your own hands.

In the tank you need to install a filter and compressor. As a filter sponge fit, connected to the compressor. To maintain the temperature, you need a water heater.

For lighting it is better to choose fluorescent lamps that do not heat the water too much.

Replacement of water should be carried out in an amount of 20-40% of the volume of the settler. Siphon bottom is also needed, better after a water change.

Sponge from the filter to rinse 1 time per week, depending on the degree of clogging. Aeration and water filtration should be enabled around the clock.

Water for replacement must insist 2-3 days.

In the first days of life, the amount of daylight hours should be 12 hours; it should be gradually reduced. At the age of 3-4 months, small fish will be enough for 8-10 hours of light.

Saturated lighting increases the rate of growth and development. The best water temperature in the tank: 28 ° C for the first 3 days of life.

Gradually, the temperature decreases to 26 ° C, in 3-4 months to 24 ° C.

Proper care is not possible without feeding. The first 3 weeks of life they can be fed live dust and artemia by the term of incubation for 6-8 hours. In the first month of life in the diet, you can add bloodworms, chopped shaker, Cyclops.

It is important that the feed is crushed. You can also give boiled and chopped chicken yolk, alternating it with other feeds.

It is recommended to give branded feed for fry guppies.

Look at the newly born guppy fry.

As they grow, the fry need to be sorted. When it is possible to identify the floor, especially the matured guppies, prepare an aquarium with water, diluting it with water from a pitcher.

Guppies from the age of 2-4 weeks can breed, therefore, in order to avoid early pregnancy of females, sorting should be carried out.

The dominant feature of the male guppy in the early stages is the lengthening and folding of the lower fin, which is located near the anus. Over time, this fin will turn into gonopodia.

Once gonopodium is formed, it will be easier to determine the gender in the early stages. Mixed-fry cultivation of fry is good for their health.

With separate maintenance, it is easier to care for them, and they do not spend their strength on pursuing each other.

If the fry do not take food during feeding, it means that the quality of water does not meet the standards. Healthy fry have a rounded belly and a strong appetite. Many problems with growing fry are due to the fact that they are provided with the wrong care.

This applies to cleaning the aquarium (bottom siphons, water changes, filtration, aeration).

The first signs of coloring of young fish do not appear immediately, depending on the species or breed. Sometimes the female guppy is able to give birth to offspring from different males, or once a fertilized female can give birth every month.

The number of fry in one brood is about 20. Therefore, it happens that fry from several broods grow in an aquarium.

The first time after birth, the fry can stay at the bottom in a stationary state.

If it is wrong to care for the female during pregnancy, she may give birth to premature fry, which will have a yolk sac, before the expected time. Female premature births occur because of frequent water changes in the aquarium, or because of the launch of a guppy in a recently launched aquarium.

Mortality among premature fry is very high.

Settling an aquarium is a demanding, painstaking task. It requires theoretical knowledge.

Fish may have full or relative compatibility and be completely incompatible.

Most likely, representatives of the same family, detachment, suborder, having the same size and conditions of detention can get along. Common sense will not allow the inhabitants of cooler waters to settle in tropical conditions.

Predatory large species can cause serious harm to miniature water inhabitants. But there are exceptions in any rule, which is confirmed by experienced aquarists. There are many cases where peace-loving fish friendly cohabited with fierce predators for a long time.

At the same time, baseless wars often arose between calm fish.

If you are still not sure that water inhabitants are compatible, you can always use special tables. They contain information that will dispel your doubts and prevent you from making irreparable mistakes.
