Golden Sturiosome (Sturiosoma aureum) – content, breeding

Golden Sturisom (Sturiosoma aureum) was opened in Colombia in 1900.

In addition to the generally accepted name is the Colombian Sturisom and giant whiptail.

Habitat: clean and fast waters of the Rio Magdalena River in Colombia.

Description: low elongated body painted in olive-gold tones. Along the body there are two wide dark stripes, and on the back near the first dorsal ray there are dark horizontal stripes.

Belly light. The head is oblong, on a snout a small outgrowth, a very long tail stem.

On the tail fin, the upper lobe ends in a long thread.

The black dorsal fin is high, well developed, the males are more arched. If the sturisom is kept in comfortable conditions, then there are elongated braids on the pectoral, dorsal and caudal fins.

Gill slits are located at the bottom of the head.

There are skin teeth, and the mouth sucker is provided with villi and horn tubercles, which help the fish to scrape algae from surfaces and also to resist strong currents.

Females are larger, the belly strongly arched before spawning creates the impression of a raised front part of the body. In males after maturation on the head, the pectoral fins, less often on the back are formed peculiar spines – “beard” and “mustache”.

In nature, there is a golden sturisome 30 cm in size, in conditions of an aquarium it does not grow more than 20 cm.

Arrangement and parameters of the aquarium: you can keep in large containers of at least 200 liters. Golden Sturisom is very sensitive to soil and water pollution. Begin to hurt with an increase in the number of infusoria in the water.

Requires powerful filtering with aeration and systematic water changes.

Sturiosome Golden (Sturiosoma aureum) stays at the bottom. In an aquarium, shelters, coats and dense thickets of large-leaved plants that create shaded areas at the bottom are necessary.

Very much like to devour snags.

Water parameters: t 23 – 28 ° С, dH 5 – 15, pH 6.5 – 7.

Active at night and compatible with any peaceful fish that prefer the upper and middle layers. In a close aquarium Golden Sturisom becomes aggressive to other bottom fish.

Nutrition: the main share of the diet should take vegetable feed. Feed should be in the evening before turning off the lights.

They devour the bloom of both plant (algae) and animal origin (hydras, bryozoans), thus performing a sanitary function in the aquarium.

Of the live feeds take the shredder and bloodworms, but the share of live feeds should not exceed 30%. Gnawing snags, get the necessary cellulose and ballast substances for digestion.

Reproduction: snags, stones, on which the female will lay eggs, are placed in the spawning aquarium. Ensure a strong flow of water.

In nature, caviar is deposited among the roots of trees, between stones and on the leaves of plants. In the aquarium, plastic, glass or ceramic tubes, cores, holes made in shell rock or sandstone will be suitable for this purpose.

Before spawning in the female, the belly is noticeably rounded and the egg-laying is seen with the naked eye.

Spawning doubles. The performance of the female – 200 eggs, which are deposited on the glass. After spawning, it settles.

The male caring for caviar cleans it from dregs and creates a stream of water around the eggs.

Incubation is long – up to 7 days. Fry swim on the third day. Their growth is uneven.

Fry of Golden Sturisses are fed with cyclops nauplii and rotifers.

Fish capable of breeding to 2 years.

Depending on the conditions created in the aquarium Sturiosome Golden (Sturiosoma aureum) can live in captivity from 4 to 15 years.
