Girinoheylus (catfish aquarium fish): species (gold, yellow), maintenance and care, algae-food compatibility, shrimp food

To help in the fight against green algae comes fish girinoheylus, known as the Chinese algae. It is common to spell herichoheilus, which is considered erroneous.

Girinoheylus belongs to the carp family. Comes from rivers and ponds of Southeast Asia and China.

Loves ponds with a strong current and a large number of algae and drifts. In the east, it is a commercial fish, because of which in some countries the natural ranges are on the verge of depletion.

The golden girinoheylus in nature grows up to 30 cm, and in an aquarium it can grow up to 12–15 cm. The body is oblong, slightly arched and flattened on the sides. Gill openings are designed so that they allow the animal to not use its mouth when breathing.

Eyes large, yellow with black pupil. The mouth is expressed by a sucker and a scraper, thanks to which the girinoheylus is tightly attached to the surfaces and chews on the algae. On the muzzle small outgrowths.

Algae is golden, yellow and orange. Color is spotty or monotonous. The fins are translucent yellow, orange or gray.

Forked tail. The dorsal fin is high, occupies one third of the body of the fish in width.

Golden algae actively scrape off fouling from stones and glasses. As a teenager, girinoheylus is peaceful, but as an adult, it becomes territorial and aggressive, especially in relation to competitors for food.

It dwells in all layers of water, leads a daily life.

With good care, the pet lives more than 10 years.

In the aquariums gold gauinohailus are more common. Forms with natural color can be seen less often.

On sale are available species bred on farms, and not caught in nature. All species differ only in color, conditions and character are the same.

Color from yellow to olive with black patches. Scales are edged with dark.

Color in yellow and orange tones, there may be spots. Not to be confused with the Siamese seaweed – the owner of a longitudinal black stripe on the body and mouth with another structure.

Body color is golden. There may be dark spots on the body.

Yellow algae differs from the golden variety in a uniform color distribution.

Winner of a light pink body with a golden sheen.

Color light brown with dark spots. The flake pattern is clearly visible.

The tail is translucent with black dots.

Golden Guirinoheylus needs clean water with good aeration and a spacious aquarium.

A 100-liter aquarium is enough for young fish, for an adult girinoheylus – from 200 l. When sharing, you must add 30 liters of volume to each individual. Pick up the aquarium with a tight lid so that the fish will not jump out.

Water temperature22–28 degrees
Rigidity5–19 dGh
Acidity6–8 pH

Aquarium maintenance includes weekly water changes of 20–25% each with ground cleaning with a siphon and washing decorations.

Plant any favorite plants in the golden algae aquarium. With a sufficient amount of plant food fish do not touch even the plants with delicate leaves.

Plant large quantities of plants to create natural shelters for fish. Beginners fit:

Experienced aquarists can plant more fastidious plants:

Cover the bottom with small pebbles and gravel or sandy ground.

Of the equipment required:

  • Filter. The device should create a flow of water. High-quality filtering is carried out by external filters, thanks to a variety of filter material.
  • Compressor. Responsible for the supply of oxygen. Pick a powerful device. The lack of oxygen is indicated by accumulation of aquarium dwellers in the upper layers of water.
  • Heater. The temperature should not fall below 20 degrees, otherwise the golden sea-dwelling will become apathetic and prone to disease. With constant heating of the room heating is not required. You can cool the water in summer with cans of frozen water.
  • Algae eaters use caves and pots as shelters. Tree driftwood perfectly recreates the natural habitat of golden gyrinoheylus.

    Place some flat stones on the bottom.

    Equipping the lighting system, familiarize yourself with the requirements of plants. Often, an excess of light is necessary for the growth of green algae – a source of food for golden gyrinoheylus.

    Golden Girinoheylus are omnivorous. Feed daily.

    Once a week piss hungry day. Young animals in the diet is dominated by plant foods:

  • spinach;
  • seaweed;
  • cucumbers;
  • zucchini;
  • tablets for catfish.
  • 1-2 times a week, feed fish protein foods in frozen or live form:

    Wash live food with running water and treat in a solution of methylene blue or antibiotics.

    Adult fish are switching to protein feed, so as you grow, add more bloodworms and artemia to your diet. When there is a shortage of animal food, the algae gnaws the scales of the fish, causing injury to them.

    Do not overfeed gold lining, otherwise they will refuse algae on the glass.

    Young girinoheyluse suitable for general aquariums. For the girinoheylus, moving and peaceful fish are preferable:

    Adult fish keep alone or in a group of 5 individuals. With such a settlement, a hierarchy is formed, and the aggression is distributed within the group.

    Bad compatibility with small and unhurried fish, as well as aggressive predators.

    At home breeding is almost impossible. Breeding golden girinohaylusov engaged in special farms, using hormonal injections.

    Suitable drugs are expensive, it is difficult to get them.

    You can determine the sex during the spawning season. Sexual maturity occurs in 2-3 years.

    The females are larger than the males, and the males acquire a pronounced color, and a fatty tubercle appears on the head.

    Equip the spawn in a 200-liter container. Lay on the bottom of the grid to protect the eggs. Take care of high-quality filtration and aeration, plant a large number of plants.

    Provide moderate coverage. Water spawning parameters:

    Temperature24 degrees
    Rigidity4–5 dGh
    Acidity6.8 pH

    Make daily water changes up to 10%. Before spawning, give the female a hormonal injection, as well as during planting and after breeding.

    Place the female and 1-2 males with the spawn. Females lay 3-4 thousand eggs. After spawning, seed the producers.

    Remove whitened eggs. Incubation time: 1-2 days. As starting feed are suitable:

  • “Live dust”;
  • shredded adult food;
  • boiled egg yolk.
  • From the 7th day of life, add artemia and rotifers.

    Diseases occur with contamination and deviations from the necessary conditions of detention:

  • Over-feeding fish leads to obesity, which causes bloating. Follow the feeding regime, feed in small pieces and take care of a varied diet.
  • Golden algae can be poisoned by nitrogen compounds or undergo oxygen starvation if the water is polluted. Periodically check the content of nitrites and ammonia tests. With an excess of harmful compounds, replace a quarter of the volume of water, add air conditioners that neutralize the chemical compounds.
  • Girinoheylus golden is confronted with both infectious and parasitic diseases. Signs: tousled scales, pale color, loss of appetite, long stay in shelters, lethargy, plaque on the body. To establish what the disease in fish, experts will help. Drugs are sold in pet stores, also use a broad-spectrum antibacterial drugs.
  • Each fish has an individual character. Someone faced the aggressive temper of the girinoheylus and lost pets of smaller size, and someone was in awe of the hardworking aquarium cleaner.

    Golden Girinoheylus is found on sale for 110–250 rubles.

    Golden Girinoheylus is an interesting and useful aquarium fish, suitable for large tanks. Due to problems with its neighbors and relatively large size, it is inferior in popularity to some other algae.
