Geophagus Steindahner: how to maintain and dilute in aquas

Hello dear colleagues. I finally got home and found some time to write a blog article. Unfortunately, the work does not leave any free time for writing, so you have to get to the computer swoops.

And we will talk about the next representative of the family of tsikhlovyh.

The geophagus of Steindachner lives in the basins of the Magdalena and Cauca rivers that flow in Colombia. The hero of today’s article is a rather large fish that is not suitable for all cichl lovers.

Besides, she has a peculiar appearance.

Geophagus body is flattened and elongated. The back has a more curved profile in contrast to the abdomen. The main body color can be either gray-brown or olive.

Places of scales can cast a golden sheen. The dorsal and caudal fins have a red border (in males it is especially pronounced).

The remaining unpaired fins are brown with small yellowish strokes and spots.

Anal and dorsal fins slightly elongated. Males on the forehead have a reddish fatty growth, which becomes especially noticeable during spawning. Females are deprived of such fatty growths and have a more modest color.

When spawning, 8 transverse strips appear on the body, which in some places may be intermittent. The maximum size of a fish in nature is 25 centimeters, but in aquariums this fish grows to a maximum of 20 centimeters in length.

The size of the female is 10 centimeters, the male is about 15.

Geophagus is considered a peaceful aquarium fish, which is held mainly by the middle and lower layers of the aquarium. It is advisable to keep these fish in the species aquarium, as the fish is quite aggressive and it is extremely difficult to choose neighbors for it.

If you acquire a flock of geophagus steindachner, then it is advisable to buy females half the size of the males, otherwise your males simply drive the females through the aquarium.

Equip an aquarium with stone caves, grottoes, put a few branchy and beautiful snags, as well as plant aqua-leaved aquarium plants with a powerful root system. To prevent the fish from digging up your grass, cover the rhizome with stones.

Do not forget about such basic things as filtration, aeration and regular water changes. Water temperature in aqua should be within 24 – 28 degrees, hardness within 6 – 18 dH, active reaction of the environment 6.5 – 7.5 pH.

You can feed pets with vegetable, live and frozen food.

The fish reaches sexual maturity at the age of 8-10 months. If the fish has changed the color of the body, then spawning is not far off.

In addition, the signal for spawning is the appearance of the seed line in the male, which is shown much earlier than the discoloration. It is possible to determine the spawning day by appearing in the female egg deposit.

With light pushes in the belly, the male provokes the female to spawn. The spawning process is quite interesting, as the fish occupy a T-shaped position, during which the male stands upright and the female across.

After spawning, the female collects all the eggs in the mouth, which the male fertilizes there.

The fry begin to leave their mother’s mouth after a few weeks, but they are not going to leave their shelter finally. At night, or in case of danger, the fry will hide in the mother’s mouth. If the fry strongly scare, they can easily jump out of the aquarium.

To prevent the fish from leaving the aqua, you will have to either cover the jar with a cover glass or reduce the water level. Starter feed for fry: Nauplii of Artemia and Cyclops.
