Flower horn (aquarium fish tsikhlasoma): content, care, reproduction, compatibility, feeding, photos, description

The flower horn or flower horn is a large and vibrant cichlid. The fish is named so because of the multi-colored color and the fat cone on the head.

It is considered the most beautiful aquarium inhabitant.

Horn appeared in Malaysia through breeding. Species that have become parents of the Horn are unknown. The hybrid is capable of reproduction.

There are specific variations with a short body and an increased circumference on the head.

Flower grows up to 40 cm in length, weight about 1 kg. The body is large, flattened on the sides.

On the head there is a fat bump. The flowering happens in olive-gray tones, as well as in yellow, red, black, green and blue. As it grows, the color changes.

The eyes are large, red, amber or dark. The fins are elongated and pointed, and the tail is rounded.

Scales large and shiny.

Flower horns are territorial, show aggression both within the species and towards representatives of other species. Lead daily life.

They love to dig soil and dig up plants.

They remember the owner and allow themselves to be ironed, but if they are hungry or spawn, they can bite the hand.

Flower horn live 8-10 years.

Such large fish require a spacious aquarium and expensive equipment. Aquarist needs to monitor the purity of the water, as the horn litters during a meal. Remove uneaten food residues in the water immediately.

The diet of fish is full of live food, which spoils the quality of water faster. Maintenance of the aquarium is complicated by the fact that the pet can attack the arm.

For one individual, an aquarium of 100–200 l with a lid is suitable, for a couple – 400–450 l, with a horn content with other species – at least 800 l with a large number of shelters. In the aquarium with flower horn, snags, rocks and grottoes look good.

Flover hornam requires clean water with moderate flow.

Temperature26–32 degrees
Acidity6.5–7.8 pH
Rigidity9–20 dGh

It is better not to plant the plants in the reservoir with a flower horn, as the green will be quickly destroyed. Some aquarists manage to save plants with a strong root system, for example, echinodorus, placing them at the far wall of the aquarium.

Fill the bottom with gravel or pebbles, then the pet will be able to move it at its discretion.

Mandatory set of devices:

  • Filter. Choose a powerful external filter that creates a gentle flow of water. Capacity should be from 100 l / h.
  • Compressor. The device fills water with oxygen. If there is no compressor available for the required displacement, it is allowed to take a more powerful device.
  • Heater.
  • Pick up a bright light that will enhance the beauty of the fish. With a lack of light, the horn scales fade.

    Clean the soil with a siphon weekly and add 15–20% of fresh water. Clean the windows and rinse the filter material as needed.

    Check the water for nitrites, especially in the spring. If the content of hazardous substances in the aquarium is exceeded, perform a complete water change within 2 days, changing by half of the volume.

    Feed fish 2-3 times a day:

  • cichlid feed;
  • bloodworm;
  • shrimp;
  • crickets;
  • grasshoppers;
  • fish fillet;
  • gammarus.
  • Flower Horn eats live, dry and frozen food. It requires a large amount of protein, but you should not give the hornam the meat of mammals.

    Safer to keep a horn alone. When keeping 2 fish in a small volume, inevitable oppression, even if you settle the male and female. If there is a bulk reservoir, then the Horn flover will get along with the views:

  • black paku;
  • Managuanan Cichlasoma;
  • astronotus;
  • pterigoplicht;
  • plexostomus;
  • gourami giant.

    Flovers breed in aquariums. During spawning, look after pets so that they do not hurt each other.

    A dark spot appears on the dorsal fin of the female. The male is larger with a more pronounced hump on the head.

    The males become sexually mature at the age of 12 months, but they are fully ready for reproduction in 2 years. Stimulate spawning by frequent water changes and maintaining the temperature at around 28 degrees. The size of the spawning aquarium – from 150 liters per pair.

    Equip an aquarium with shelters. Divide the space with a net so that the male does not injure the female.

    Stretch the mesh 7–10 cm from the bottom and place the flat stone under the mesh closer to the female.

    The female lays caviar on the stone. In laying 700–1000 eggs. To increase the percentage of fertilized eggs, you can place the filter so that the flow is in the direction from the male to the female.

    The male fertilizes the eggs, and after 3 days the fry appear. Parents take care of the fry next month. After that, plant fish.

    Feed the fry with Artemia nauplii and ground feed for adult flowers.

    The Horn flover has strong immunity, with good care of the aquarium the fish do not get sick. With inappropriate parameters and poor water quality, fish are subject to:

  • Poisoning. Increased concentration of nitrogenous compounds leads to oxygen starvation. Flovers breathe faster, stay in the upper layers of water and sometimes try to jump out. At the same time, the gills darken, and with prolonged exposure to harmful substances, the fish becomes depressed and loses appetite. Check the water for nitrites and gradually replace. Strengthen aeration. If the water temperature is too high, lower it to 26-28 degrees, then the liquid will be better saturated with oxygen.
  • Acidosis. It occurs at low pH. Flower horn lie on its side, hiding and breathing faster. If there are plants, greens dramatically accelerates growth. Check the water parameters, replace part of the fluid. Pour in hydrogen peroxide (1 ml per 1 liter of water).
  • “Black Chin”. Appears in low-quality water. A darkening appears on the chin and body of the fish. The treatment is not developed. Replace contaminated water smoothly.
  • Hexamitosis. Dimples appear on the body, filled with mucus. Set aside a sick individual. Mix furazolidone with feed (0.06 g of the drug per 100 g of feed). Give medicine within a week.
  • Fans of horn flover are delighted with the appearance and intelligence of the fish. Few decide to have such a pet.

    Not everyone can feed and contain fish.

    Size, cmprice, rub.
    Up to 5450

    Rare copies with a big lump on the head or a pattern resembling hieroglyphs cost thousands of dollars.

    Cichlids are recognized as the smartest aquarium dwellers. They have a good memory.

    However, other types of fish also amaze with their abilities: they remember the places of sleep and feeding, feeding time, distinguish friendly neighbors from enemies and understand when they are in danger.
