Five-Striped Afiosemion: keeping and breeding in an aquarium

If the volume of your aquarium does not allow you to keep large fish, you need to think about which pets to settle in your home pond so that they feel comfortable. Fish that tolerate small aquariums in a limited space include tooth-toothed, haracin, and other small fish.

But, to a large extent the optimal inhabitants for small aquariums are almost all representatives of the kartozubyh family. Unfortunately, in my city of these fish I could not get, much more opportunities to buy tooth-toothed in large regional centers.

Today, I would like to talk in more detail about a five-strip Asian semion, which is simple to maintain and can act as a training fish for aquarists who have dedicated their lives to collecting and breeding toothfish. Under natural conditions, the five-band opiosemion is found in small rivers and lakes in the equatorial part of Guinea and Gabon.

There afiosemiony prefer to settle in shallow coastal areas, where a large number of aquatic vegetation.

Rains in these regions are rare, and when the drought ends, it is replaced by a period of torrential tropical rains that can go on for days. The temperature of the water year-round is kept within 24 – 28 degrees.

In droughty times, the smallest reservoirs dry up, and all others become shallow.

Under natural conditions, a five-band opiosemion grows no more than 6 centimeters in length; in aquariums, the length of the body does not exceed 5 centimeters. The color of this afiosemiona, like that of the majority of toothless tooth-like teeth, is quite attractive.

Along the whole body on a turquoise background passes several stripes, which are formed from large red spots. The fins have a red-yellow edging.

For the maintenance of a five-strip affiosemion a small volume aquarium is needed (from 20 to 30 liters). Mandatory bank must be covered with a cover glass, as the fish love to jump from the aquarium.

If you do not want to cover the aquarium, or there is nothing to do, then the water level in the aquarium should be 5 centimeters lower from the top edge of the glass.

With the maintenance of karzubyh need to pay attention to the quality and composition of the aquarium water. Hydrochemical indicators of water in the aquarium should be as follows:

  • Stiffness not more than 12 degrees;
  • Active reaction environment 5.5 – 6.8 pH;
  • Temperature 22 – 24 degrees.

In addition, the peat should be placed in the aquarium so that the water becomes a light orange color. Alternatively, for peat water, you can use a decoction of alder cones. When arranging an aquarium for afiosemionov, it would be nice to add water to it from another bank, where the fish from this family were already kept.

The fish are pretty good at salting water (for 1 liter of water, there is 1 tablespoon of salt). It is also necessary to replace every week in the aquarium ¼ of the water with fresh water subject to the specified parameters.

With the maintenance of kartozubyh it is very important to monitor the temperature, it must be constant. The reason is that when water is at a high temperature, the lifespan of fish is significantly reduced, and at a temperature of 16 – 18 degrees, fish lose activity, the color is paler and the fish become ill.

The Afiosemion striatum gets on well with small, small-sized peaceful fish (red and blue neons, rhodostomuses, rasboros, minors, ornatus, royal tetras, etc.).

When arranging an aquarium, it is necessary to leave enough space for swimming, because afiosemiony are very mobile and use the entire space of the aquarium for swimming. But at the same time, the fish are very shy and need a large number of various shelters: snags, grottoes of stones, overgrown plants. Any inert material will be suitable as aquarium soil and it is not necessary that it covers the entire area of the bottom of the aquarium.

From aquarium plants, it is better to give preference to small-leaved and floating hydrophytes (Javanese moss, Christmass moss, hornolistnik, ambulia, cabomba, pistia, riccia).

Reproduction of afiosemionov does not present any difficulties and any novice aquarist can breed them within a year without prior preparation. When landing already adult fishes in a house aquarium, spawning can begin almost next week.

Spawning in the karbozubih portion of the week every day. But the intensity of spawning can vary from day to day. The most active phase is considered morning and evening.

Producer productivity depends on their quality, age and health.

No matter how many aquarists try to catch afiosemionov eating their own offspring, they refused to eat caviar, she is simply not interested in her. But the parental instincts are also alien to these fish. This is due, most likely to the fact that in nature, these fish of their offspring simply do not see, because the water bodies in which they live, dry up and their parents die.

And young stock will be born only after the drought season is replaced by the rainy season. It turns out that parents never see their offspring, hence the devil-may-care attitude to caviar and fry.

Eggs of kartozubykh are small and their diameter never exceeds 1 millimeter. Eggs develop within a month. When removing caviar from spawning substrate, you need to be careful, because the eggs can be damaged when transferred to another container.

If there are floating plants in your tank, since the seasonals can lay eggs in them.

And now a few words about the stimulation of hatching fry. Once in the egg has reached the stage of “eye”, it’s time to stimulate the larvae hatching. There are several ways:

  1. Pour caviar with cold and soft water with a temperature of 8 to 10 degrees;
  2. Shaking caviar;
  3. Immerse the caviar on Wednesday, where the hatching fry has already been hatching.

Surprisingly, thanks to the latter method, aquarists managed to achieve a 100% hatching of fry during the day. In general, it is better to save such water in order to use it for subsequent hatching. Freshly hatched fry are very weak and usually die when trying to get rid of the protein shell.

You can help the fish with a thin needle, which you will pull off the shell.

The first few days of their life and until the transition to active nutrition are extremely important for the young. After the yolk sac is completely resolved in the batch of young stock, the mortality rate will decrease significantly. Afiosemion fry grow very quickly and extremely unevenly.

But no cases of cannibalism were noticed. In order for the young growth to grow actively, food must always be present in the aquarium.

Fish-toothed fry are not picky and eat almost any kind of dry food of optimal size. A microworm, ciliate-slipper is suitable as a starter feed and is well eaten by Sera Micron.

As the fish matures, nauplii cyclops and rotifers can be added to the diet.

The adults of the five-lane Afio-Semion perfectly eat any kind of live food: a pipe maker, a daphnia, a bloodworm. In addition, frozen foods are suitable for feeding pets.

As with other fish, the diet should be varied, as the monotonous food can trigger the development of tuberculosis and obesity.

In general, the five-lane opiosemion is a strong and durable aquarium fish and survives in diseases, provided that the treatment was started in a timely manner. Puberty occurs at the age of 4 – 5 months, it all depends on the conditions of detention.

You should not be guided by a change in color, because the coloring of fish can occur much earlier than puberty.
