Fish life expectancy

maintenance, care, compatibility

Each aquarist wonders how many aquarium fish live. Everyone needs to know this. If you are not sure that you want to keep the aquarium for a long time, get fish with a short lifespan.

For experienced breeders, the number of years is important to count the spawning that the fish will have time to implement.

Several things can affect the lifespan of aquarium dwellers:

  • The size;
  • Water temperature;
  • Overfeeding;
  • Undernourishment;
  • Conditions of detention;
  • Neighborhood.

Optimum conditions for a decorative goldfish

Of course, there are no strict regulated rules for its content. We can only talk about some recommendations based on the vast centuries-old experience of aquarists of the whole world on the breeding of goldfish in captivity.

They belong to the cold-water, the fish feel great at normal room temperature. Even a slight heating of the aquatic environment is extremely poorly tolerated.

A few words about feeding. Crucians, as you know, are very voracious and almost omnivorous.

And since a goldfish is a decorative crucian, it will eat as much as there will be food available. Feeding is frequent and abundant – a high probability of overeating, which will affect the duration of fish life is extremely negative.

In addition, it must be remembered that animals eat well some aquatic vegetation.

Conditions of detention. Goldfish need space, so the aquarium should not be overcrowded. It should be remembered that it was originally a pond fish, accustomed to frolic in the water column.

By the way, and now all individuals sold in pet stores can be divided into 2 large groups: grown in ponds for mass distribution and purely aquarium individuals.

It is unlikely that an ordinary seller in a pet store will tell you exactly where these bright decorative crucians came from – from a pond nursery or a selection aquarium. But just in case, you should count on one fish to account for at least 40-50 liters of water.

So imagine what the size of the aquarium fit.

Water parameters. This animal leaves behind a lot of waste, and the water loves clean and saturated with oxygen.

Therefore, good filtration (especially mechanical) and aeration are extremely important.

General rules. So, summing up some information about the features of the content, we can formulate a few rules, the observance of which will prolong the life of goldfish for a long time:

  1. With a content of 3-4 individuals the required volume of the aquarium is 150-200 liters.
  2. Existence of the powerful external filter and the compressor for aeration of water.
  3. Feeding a variety of foods (vegetable, dry feed, worms) no more than 1-2 times a day. One day a week – unloading.
  4. Mandatory presence in the aquarium aquatic plants.
  5. Weekly water change at least of the total volume.

As a rule, compliance with these recommendations has a beneficial effect on the life of bright golden beauties. Unless, of course, in the aquarium is not brought infection.

The life expectancy of an angelfish in an aquarium can be 15-25 years, if you follow a number of requirements. First, be sure to launch these fish into a spacious tank of at least 100 liters per pair (female and male).

Secondly, install the compressor and the aerator, the fish saturated with oxygen will only be delighted. The compressor must be turned on for 20-30 minutes twice a day.

As for the general cleaning in the aquarium, it does not need to be carried out too often. If you remove the remnants of food and rotted plants in time, the water can be changed less often, some people manage to keep the water in crystal purity for more than six months.

Otherwise, water replacement should occur at least 3 times a month. Be sure to clean the soil, wash the walls of the tank and the filter from the accumulated dirt, green algae.

Watch the water temperature – the new water should correspond to all the parameters of the “old” one.

Do not forget that the angelfish will live more years if the feed in the aquarium is not worse than they are fed in the wild. In the wild, they are omnivorous: they feed on insect larvae and insects, zooplankton, and plants.

Therefore, they can be fed all appropriately feed: artificial for cichlids, dry, frozen and live. You can not give bloodworms and tubers, because they do not live in weakly acidic water.

You can see how the fish form brownish blisters at the anus – these are the negative effects of feeding the bloodworm and the strawman.

What decorative angelfish eat: micro-worm, artemia, earthworms, snails, koretra, daphnia, cyclop, lettuce and spinach. It is not recommended to give meat to warm-blooded animals that are saturated with fats.

Feed pelleted with spirulina can be additional feeding. You need to feed such portions so that the fish ate the food in 2-5 minutes.

Overfeeding is also harmful and shortens the life of fish, food debris can oxidize water, spoiling its quality.

Aquarium fish – gentle creatures that require constant attention and care. Currently, there are a huge number of their diverse species, each of which has its own specifics.

The rejection of this specificity by an aquarist leads to disease and death of the fish. Although, even when creating ideal conditions for them, they are not immortal and eventually die simply from old age.

The period of life of aquarium fish released by nature, depending on the family and species, each has its own. So, for example, among the Kharacin (Minor – 6 years, Neon – 4 years, Tetras – 5.5 years, Piranhas – 10 years, Metinnis – 10 years), the average lifespan is seven years.

Carp (Cardinal – 4 years, Goldfish – 15 years, Barbus – 7.5 years, Rasbora – 7.5 years, Danio – 6 years), on average, can please an aquarist with his presence for eight years.

The most diverse in color and shape of the fish belonging to the cichl family (Apistogram – 4 years, Discus – 14 years, Tsykhlozom mezanauta – 10 years, Tsikhlozom meeka – 12.5 years, Scalaria – 10 years, Severum – 14 years) live on average 11 years . Viviparous tooth-like ones – such as Molineses, Petsilia, Guppy, and the Swordsman, live, on average, less than others – 3.5 years. Among catfish (catfish glass – up to 8 years, speckled – 9 years, Tarakatum up to 10 years), the average life expectancy is 8 years.

The life of labyrinths (Gourami, Lelius, Petushki) is about 5 years.

It is believed that in old age fish have the greatest completeness of their color and beauty. The actions of an aquarist largely determine how many years aquarium fish has lived.

Seasoned aquarists are striving to prolong the lives of their pets, taking into account such factors that affect their life expectancy as stable conditions, regular feeding, and the absence of predators.

The most advanced and successful aquarists are confident that under optimal conditions of maintenance the lifespan of fish increases.

However, not everything is so simple and straightforward. One should always look for a “golden mean”, since the aquarium contains, as a rule, more than one type of inhabitants, which makes such investigations extremely difficult.

An aquarist should independently, in his own experience, having traveled a long way, consisting of trial and error, select the very conditions that will be optimal for all of his beloved pets. The main thing in aquarism is constant self-education, which will help to achieve success.

Barbusy – one of the most common type of aquarium fish in our country. There are several dozen different breeds of barbs that have long been recognized by many fish breeders.

What caused the popularity of barbs?

Firstly, their simplicity. They eat without excessive whims, sometimes even eating aquarium plants. Secondly, they are not critical of the composition of the water.

Thirdly, they are inexpensive and can be affordable for anyone. Fourth, they are very cute looking. These properties of these fish are the main reasons for the selection of barbs.

How long do the barbs live? Do the terms of their lives in captivity and in nature differ? These questions concern many breeders.

Indeed, suddenly there is a risk that these fish in captivity live very little?

Barbus: life, on average, five years. But in the third year it is better to change the composition and add new individuals to the aquarium. After all, the “oldies” are becoming very lazy, and life in the aquarium begins to slow down.

Therefore, it makes sense to fix this problem with the help of newbies.

The ideal age for breeding and spawning varies. Usually, puberty is six to seven months. But for different breeds, this characteristic varies in different ways.

In the right conditions, with good live food, fiery tadpoles and Cyclops daphnia, a stable aquarium, without diseases, the fish live for four to five years. Spawning occurs in fish not often and uncontrollably, on average, about 1-2 times a year.

Different breeds of barbs have a different lifespan. Cherry barbs live for about three years. How many years live the barbs Schubert, scarlet, fiery?

They live for six years, and after four years it is difficult to spawn. Sumatran barbus, pentazone and black – about five years.

Their fecundity decreases by three years, it becomes increasingly difficult to cause spawning. In addition, breeders should take note of the tendency of these breeds to become obese, especially in old age. With age, the scales of these fish becomes more and more bright.

Filamentosus is a real long-liver; it can live for at least seven years in good conditions. After four years, they become completely black and begin to eat a lot.

Thus, on average, these fish live five years. Every year will need to pay more attention to the health of the fish.

How long can aquarium fish live? Here are two opposing views.

Lucky aquarium lovers assert that in good aquarium conditions, the life expectancy of fish is increased: the fact of the absence of predators, correct and systematic feeding, the constant environmental conditions affect.

However, this is far from clear. Maintaining normal living conditions, the absence of predators help to live and reproduce offspring even the weakest fish that would die for in natural conditions.

Such individuals can spoil the gene pool and produce painful offspring, while reducing general species indices.

In a relatively small closed aquarium system, temperature changes are very noticeable. How many live discus in aquarium?

From 10 to 18 years. Fish are considered cold-blooded individuals, and their body temperature is the same as the ambient temperature, i.e. water.

The higher the temperature of the water, the faster the metabolic processes occur in the body of the fish, and the sooner the individual lives its life.

Overfeeding also shortens the lifespan of the fish. Not very favorable conditions, constant stress, a rare change of water, unfriendly neighbors – all of these factors can affect the life of your pet.

Therefore, the question of the content of the discus should be approached as closely as possible.

It is said that by old age the fish are gaining the maximum color. However, with age, pets become more susceptible to stress, susceptible to disease and require very careful handling.
