Features of the content of leopard fish Ktenopoma

When there is an aquarium, its owners think about the inhabitants. Among the many different fish difficult to choose several species. You can consider an exotic option: African perch, which is called leopard Ktenopoy.

This is a timid, calm fish, which does not require special care. Thanks to unpretentiousness, she will long remain the favorite of newcomers to the aquarium business.

Ctenopoma – unpretentious calm aquarium fish

The zoologist Pellegrin from France classified the ctenopomes as early as the beginning of the twentieth century at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. After research, he took it to the group of African perches and gave the scientific name ctenopoma acutirostre.

Under natural conditions, leopard fish lives exclusively in the Congo River and its tributaries. It lives in the lower layers of water, therefore it cannot serve as commercial fish for the local population. Lifestyle night: Ktenopoma sleeps in the seaweed during the day, and goes hunting at night.

She waits for her prey in the thickets, but in the heat of the day she can chase her for a long time.

The body length of the fish does not exceed twenty centimeters, in the wild it is carnivorous. Leopard food use:

  • small fish;
  • fry;
  • water worms;
  • invertebrates;
  • spawn;
  • insects that live in reservoirs.

Among aquarists, this species of African perch is not too popular, but there are some exotic lovers who only contain these fish. At home, the Ktenopomes were kept in the 50s.

Ctenopoma in the reservoir has a personal territory and carefully protects it. Because of the shape of the body and the color, it is difficult for predators to find a fish.

The main body color is yellow or light brown, with dark spots throughout its area.

The coloring resembles the color of a leopard, which is why this species got such a name. The flat body allows the ctenopome to hide in the algae.

In nature, fish live no more than ten years, with the right content in captivity, its life span increases. Males and females have almost no sex differences, so it is difficult to determine the sex of an individual.

Aquarium owners can only recognize it during the mating season.

For two leopard Ctenop need an aquarium with a capacity of at least one hundred liters. This volume is necessary because of the shy and cautious temper of the fish.

Particular attention should be paid to the climatic conditions, vegetation and design of the aquarium.

To create conditions as close to natural as possible, the bottom of the tank should be plant high algae with thick foliage. Ctenopoma will rest in the thickets during the day, and at night hide in them before attacking prey.

It does not matter the type of algae and soil, because this individual does not feed on plants and does not dig the soil. But it is better to use river pebbles or coarse sand.

At the bottom it is desirable to install a few koryag, artificial grottoes or one stone wall. But for swimming you need to leave enough space, because the fish loves to frolic in the water at night. The aquarium should be filled with clean fresh water, observing the necessary for the life of the fish options:

  • low stiffness;
  • temperature should not be below 23 degrees;
  • The pH balance should be at 7 units.

Water should be subjected to stable filtration, you also need to create the effect of slow flow. Leopard perch does not need bright light, just put a few lamps with a soft light for normal growth and development of vegetation.

There are practically no problems with feeding the fish: it eats both live and frozen food. For her, a delicious delicacy will be the larvae, small fish, worms. For live prey fish will be happy to chase.

But too large fish can harm the ctenopome, therefore it is necessary to monitor its hunting.

Ctenopoma eats both live and frozen food.

For herbal supplements, the individual will be indifferent, but she will like special commercial feeds. With the exception of plant foods, leopard bass can be called omnivorous.

During the breeding season, the fish may deteriorate or increase appetite. Disruptions in nutrition at this time should not frighten its owners, after the marriage period, the diet will fully recover.

Reproduction of African perch in captivity usually ends in failure. The problem is not in the conditions of detention, but in the absence of parental instincts in the ctenopoma. Instead of creating a foamy nest for the calf and protecting future cubs, after throwing the females do not even return to their eggs.

Fish continue their normal life, completely forgetting about the cubs. The female does not choose a place for throwing caviar, she spreads it throughout the aquarium.

Accordingly, in a few days the fish will eat offspring of the future.
