Verkhovka fish belongs to the miniature representatives of the carp family. Swims at the surface of the reservoir, for which he received its name. The second name – “oatmeal” for fish stuck due to the pale gray color.
Verkhovka looks like a small bleak. Under natural conditions it lives in water bodies of Central and Eastern Europe, is suitable for breeding in an aquarium, and is of high value for fishermen.
Verkhovka always floats near the surface of the reservoir
The average length of the topcoil is only 4–5 cm, but there are individual specimens up to 8 cm long. The weight of one fish is only 7 g. The common upper part is silvery, the back is slightly greenish, and there is a pronounced light blue band along the sides.
Fins are always colorless.
During the mating season, a “pearl rash” appears on the head of the males, while females have a thickening in the area of the urogenital opening. The fish has a large scale, which is easily separated from the body. The head is cone-shaped, the lower jaw is slightly raised upwards, the incision of the mouth ends almost at eye level.
Teeth are double-rowed, compressed from sides.
For habitat fish chooses ponds with a silty bottom, but constantly keeps on the surface of the water. Leads a sedentary lifestyle and does not go on long journeys.
Toptop rarely changes body of water.
The topcoat does not tolerate loneliness, so it’s better to acquire a whole flock at once – 5-10 small fish. So it will be easier for them to adapt to the new conditions of existence.
During the daytime, the upper one floats on the surface of the aquarium, and at night it is located on the bottom.
Fish often jump out of the tank, so the aquarium should be filled only half or covered with a glass lid on top. The recommended tank volume for this type of fish is 30-40 l. Water should be clean and saturated with oxygen.
It is important to adhere to the correct temperature regime, which depends on the season.
In the summer, you need to maintain the water temperature at 24-25 ˚С, while in winter, verkhovka feels comfortable in water 12-14 ˚С. In order to create such conditions, in winter it is recommended to move the aquarium to a cool place, for example, on a window sill.
