Copper tetra or Hasemania: how to keep in an aquarium?

Hello dear readers! Copper tetra, or Hasemania, is an aquarium fish belonging to the Haracin family.

The homeland of its habitat are the waters of the south-eastern part of Brazil. Among aquarists, the fish is quite popular because it does not require any specific conditions of detention and is famous for its unpretentiousness.

In Hasemania the body is elongated and slightly flattened on the sides. The main color of her coloring is copper, which is set reddish-brown in males during spawning.

In females, the copper color has a light yellow tint. Along the entire body, from the pectoral fins to the tail, there is a black and blue stripe, which may have different ebb. Males have a golden tide around the edges, and females have a yellow tint.

The male also has yellowish spots on the caudal fin. In females, the fins are yellowish, and in males – brown-red.

In aquarium conditions, the fish does not grow more than 5 centimeters in length.

The copper tetra is a mobile, schooling, peaceful and interesting aquarium fish, which it is desirable to contain in the amount of 8-10 pieces. As neighbors you can pick up the same peaceful fish (rhodostomus, crescents, red neons, swordtails, guppies and antsistrusov).

For the normal state of health of a hydrobiont in a reservoir, the length of the reservoir should be more than 60 centimeters, it should contain dense thickets of plants as it sits in the ground (vallyseria, cabomba, limnofily, alternantry), and floating in the thickness and on the surface of the water (azolla, richchia, Pistia, Javanese Moss, Guadalupe Naiad). This is necessary so that the shaded areas are present in the aquarium. Do not forget to leave enough space for swimming.

You can feed fish both with live food and its substitutes. Fish color depends on the presence in the diet of such foods as Cyclops and Daphnia.

But be careful, as these two foods can ruin your water.

The conditions for keeping Hasemania in an aquarium are as follows:

  • temperature: 20-26 degrees;
  • hardness: 5-20 dH;
  • acidity: 6.5-7.5 pH;
  • weekly water changes in the amount of 1/5 of the volume;
  • good filtration and aeration of aquarium water.

At six months the copper tetra, or rather the males, become sexually mature, the females a little earlier – by 4 months. As a spawning aquarium suitable for 50 liters or more.

At the bottom of the reservoir is placed separator grid and place small-leaved aquarium plants (Javanese and peristristis Brazilian). Water in spawning should have the following parameters:

  • temperature: 24-27 degrees;
  • acidity: pH 6.0-6.6;
  • hardness: no more than dH.

Make the water level in the breeding ground no more than 15 centimeters. Before planting fish for spawning, keep them separately in different reservoirs and are abundantly fed. A group of fish with the same number of females and males is placed in the spawning area in the evening.

Spawning will occur in the morning. Caviar is dark brown and in one spawning the female can sweep aside up to 400 eggs.

As soon as spawning comes to an end, the producers need to be removed from the aquarium, and the jar is applied. The incubation period of caviar lasts about 24-48 hours.

After another 3-4 days the small things independently swim and feed. Starter feed – ciliates and rotifers.

To better develop the fry, you need to replace the под-1/5 of the volume of water in aquas daily.
