In nano-aquariums, quite often you can see an interesting and unusual fish, which is called Gertrude Pseudomogil, or Spotted Blue Eyed. She immediately attracts attention with her elegant look.
Many aquarium enthusiasts give birth to wild specimens, but most often there is, of course, adjustable fish. This species is peaceful, but at the same time, quite smart, so it is best to keep it in aquariums with the lid closed.
Pseudomogil gertrudy lives in Papua New Guinea and Australia, as well as in parts of Indonesia.
Gertrude’s pseudomogil lives in slow-flowing and quiet rivers with dark water. Its homeland is Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The blue-eyed has a bright body with an elegant pattern that has a slightly elongated shape.
On the anal, dorsal fin and tail there are small black dots.
By the way, it is on the fins, you can easily determine the sex of the fish. Thus, in adult males, unpaired fins are larger than in females, and the pectoral fins are raised up and decorated with a yellow stripe.
And the male body is slimmer and fins are more elongated.
The maximum size of this species is approximately 4 cm, so they can be kept in small-sized aquariums. But it is best to buy several pieces at once., approximately from 6 to 15, depending on the volume of the aquarium, as in nature they float in small flocks.
Pseudomogil Gertrude prefers places with a weak current, a large number of aquatic plants, roots, branches and fallen leaves.
In order for Gertrude to create conditions as close as possible to her habitat, mosses, snags and long-barreled plants should be added to the aquarium. Fish love the diffused light very much, so it is advisable for them to purchase floating algae.
But at the same time, they should have enough free space to swim.
For a comfortable existence, the temperature of the water in the aquarium should not fall below 23 degrees. It is advisable to change the water at least once a week, and in order to keep it clean, a filter should be installed.

Pseudomugil gertrudae are peaceful fish, therefore it is best to keep them with species of similar size and behavior. The fish themselves are quite shy, and they feel more confident if they swim in large flocks. In small aquariums, it is better to keep them alone or with snails.
If the volume allows, then to the spotted blue-eyed eyes you can run freshwater shrimp or other nano-fish. They get along well with the following species:
- Iriaterina Werner;
- Tetra Amanda;
- Rasbora Espay;
Life expectancy in this species is small, in their natural environment they live only one season. In aquariums under favorable conditions, this period is extended to 18 months.
In order for the fish to be active and stay healthy, there should be a variety of food in their diet.
Iriaterina Werner impresses with its body shape and coloring.
In nature, this species mainly feeds on invertebrates and phytoplankton. Aquarium fish suit the following feed:
- live (daphnia, small bloodworm, moin, microworms);
- dry (granules, plates, flakes);
During the feeding of the fish of Gertrude it is important to ensure that its food is balanced and varied. Dry food for her is better not to buy by weight and should be stored in tightly closed packages.
In nature, Spotted blue eye begins to spawn in the rainy season, This usually occurs from October to December. And all due to the fact that at this time the most favorable conditions for the development of caviar.
In an aquarium, this species can spawn throughout the year, if only to create suitable conditions for it.
The stimulus for spawning is feeding the fish with live feed. and an increase in temperature in the aquarium. In order for the fish to lay eggs constantly, you should not lower the water temperature below 28 degrees.
If the fry hatch in the general aquarium, then for them it is best to place the moss on the bottom. In this case, they will have more chances to survive.
Spotted blue-eyed spawns in the rainy season.
But it is best to breed a few fish in the spawn for breeding this species. For this you need to take one male and three females. If there is enough space in the spawn, then you can run a small flock of eight fish into it.
Matrimonial games go on for one day, while the male can fertilize eggs from several females at once.
In order to create favorable conditions for fish, there must be good aeration of water in a spawn. And also need a spawning substrate, as the females lay their eggs on it. You can use Javanese moss or special artificial plants as spawning substrate.
The substrate should be checked every day for the presence of eggs, as fish can eat them.
The comfortable water temperature in the aquarium for the spotted blue eye should not fall below 23 degrees.
Fertilized eggs must be transferred to a separate container with exactly the same water conditions. Ten days later, fry appear from the eggs, which will remain in this tank until they become rather large. Usually this period lasts from three to six months.
On the first day, the fry can be fed with infusoria or other small food. And in a week, they will already be able to give naupliy of artemia and microcores.
It is best to replace the water in the tank with the fry every other day. However, it does not change completely, but in part. Feed the small fish need 2-3 times a day, but in small portions.
And it is also important to ensure that excess food does not remain in the water, as this may lead to a change in its parameters and the death of the fry.
Gertrude’s blue-eyed bird is a very interesting fish that will adorn any aquarium. And in order to be active and healthy, you should follow simple rules in caring for her.
