Aquarists like to keep unusual fish at home. Oranda is considered one of the most attractive species. Her ancestor is a golden crucian carp.
The fish is bred by breeding, and it has many subspecies. Oranda has a unique appearance for which it has gained wide popularity in the aquarium world.
Goldfish Oranda – very popular among aquarists.
Oranda – a bright representative of the aquarium goldfish, belonging to the carp family. Other names – shishiga-shira, orando, sisigasira.
For the first time it is mentioned in documents of the XVI century. China is considered the homeland of the oranga fish, but some scientists are inclined to believe that this variety was introduced in Japan in the 15th century. Today it is successfully selected in both countries.
This fish was imported to Russia in the 18th century.
The large body of orande has an ovoid shape. The body is covered with shimmering scales.
The aquatic inhabitant has a long tail fin form. The remaining fins are paired, except for the dorsal.
The bulge of the eyes depends on the species of individual.
A special feature of the oranda fish is the fleshy growth on the head, which is called wen. It appears at the age of 3-4 months and is formed within 1-2 years.
A fully developed hood becomes in 2−2,5 years. The Japanese believe that with a large size wen fish look prettier.
The fish has a short egg-shaped body with a mass of warty outgrowths covering almost the entire head and elongated fins.
The length of adults varies from 7 to 18 cm. Under the most favorable conditions, they grow even more.
The largest goldfish, orandes, were obtained in Hong Kong: they were 38 cm long.
The color of the underwater inhabitant may vary in its subspecies. Fishes with voile tails are black, red, dark brown, white and even blue.
Some varieties are two-colored, while others may be devoid of metallic luster.
The average life expectancy of an orange is 12–16 years. Under good conditions, these beauties can live up to 20 years.
Fish can be kept not only in the aquarium, but also in domestic ponds, but only if conditions of cleanliness and relatively high temperatures are maintained.
Residents of China call Orange a “flower of water.” In Asian countries, this is the name of all species of fish with a fleshy growth that covers the head.
Sometimes they are called “tiger head” or “tiger goldfish”.
Today, Orange is sold in almost any pet store, where you can also get the necessary information about them from consultants. The price of aquarium pets depends on the subspecies of the fish and the size of its “cap”.
The color of fish is bright scarlet, red, orange, yellow and occasionally bluish-iron, there are also dark shades.
Oranda is represented by several subspecies. They are distinguished by body shape, color, size of scales and fins.
- Oranda “Little Red Riding Hood”. Keeping such a fish in an aquarium will require a responsible approach from its owner. The beautiful subspecies is characterized by a white or light pink body shade, metallic sheen and a bright red “cap”. Orana grows to 22 cm in length.
- Red and white. The fish has an original look. Large red and white spots are scattered throughout the body, forming a unique pattern.
- Chocolate. The brown fish has scales with a metallic sheen. The head, fins and back are darker than the main body. This species is characterized by short round fins. Fish can grow up to 21 cm.
- Dark gray. The body is characterized by metallic color and ebb. The head and fins are dark. The maximum length is 20 cm. The long fins are rounded. In small aquariums, dark gray fish become very slow.
- Dutch lionhead The fish has a rounded, swollen body. On the head velvety growths resembling a mane. The short tail is raised upwards, can be forked. The Dutch Lionhead has no dorsal fin. The scales are characterized by a yellow-lemon shade. The fins, tail and wen are scarlet.
- Gyroshima This species lacks the “cap” characteristic of Orange, but on the sides of the mouth and sometimes there are fluffy growths on the nose. The giroshima have no dorsal fin. Fish has a silver color with a metallic sheen. The upper part of the head is colored orange or red.
The length of the red cap is about 23 cm, the lion-like red head and white body. The fish looks unusually impressive and very attractive.
Recently brought another species of goldfish – blue. It resembles a dark gray subspecies, but this body has a lighter body.
There are bluish or dull blue spots on the back. This fish is quite hardy and feels great, living in cool water.
An orande can be placed in a pond, but when it gets cold first, it should be immediately transferred to a home aquarium. You should also remember that the fish can become a victim of large animals living nearby, so you should take care of its safety in advance.
For larger fish, select a large aquarium. For one pet you need a capacity of at least 50 liters. For 4−6 fish acquire a reservoir of 200−250 l. With a large aquarium, it is possible to avoid strong pollution of the aquatic environment with fish waste. The tank must be equipped with a powerful filter.
You should also establish biological filtration and aeration. Although orandes are not prone to jumping, it is recommended to cover the tank with a lid to avoid evaporation of water.
For a goldfish, set the correct temperature setting. Best of all, she will feel at + 18−23 degrees. Temperatures below +16 degrees Orana does not tolerate.
Water should be with a pH of 6–8 pH and a hardness of 12–16 dGH. Improve the health of fish can be a small amount of salt added to the liquid.
Orande must be maintained in a large aquarium, as with a lack of movement in fish, there are metabolic problems and motor complications.
Small rounded gravel is poured at the bottom of the tank. About such a soil active diggers will not be hurt.
Plants with smooth forms may be present in the aquarium, and options with sharp edges are not allowed.
The water in the aquarium should be regularly updated at least 30−40% of the total. With a large number of water pets, cleaning is carried out more often.
Oranda can eat both vegetable and live or artificial food. Because it needs a lot of carbohydrates, it needs certain foods.
Feed with natural impurities support and improve the bright options of colors.
Aquarium pets are fed:
- pipe worker;
- salad dressing;
- live or frozen worms.
Asians are quite voracious, so it is important to ensure that they do not overeat. Adults are fed once a day, and the fry – 2 times.
Dry food should be given in small portions so that the fish eat it without residue. In some oranges, fleshy growths can interfere with seeing food, so they are fed longer.
They are unpretentious and omnivorous for food: they eat both live and vegetable food, as well as dry food.
So that the fish do not eat ornamental plants, its diet should be enriched with greens. Excessive pollution in the aquarium can be avoided with high-quality flakes, after which the inhabitant of the artificial reservoir creates less waste.
With special food, you can not be afraid that the fish will be infected with diseases or infections.
If the water pet overeat, after a meal, it floats on its side. The fish will return to normal, if you put it on a diet for 1-2 days.
Oranda aquarium fish are considered a friendly species. They live comfortably in a flock with their relatives. They also get along with carp and catfish.
However, not all species of underwater inhabitants will be suitable neighbors for them.
In the aquarium with oranda can not settle:
The last two species bite the delicate fins of Shishiga-Shira, which is not able to fight back because of its calm nature.
With orande fry and other small fish that she can easily swallow should not swim. It is best to plant it with varieties of similar size.
Since orandes swim slowly, it is not necessary to push active and aggressive fish to them.
Experienced aquarists often keep goldfish separate from other underwater pets, as it is difficult to maintain cleanliness in the tank with them. Some species cannot be kept in the same container, since they often require different conditions.
Prefers a community of their own kind, bright light and an abundance of free space.
Orands become sexually mature at the age of 18 months. Experts recommend choosing to breed only healthy males and females.
Usually oranda ready to spawn in mid-spring.
Only in this period can you determine the floor of a goldfish. The female’s abdomen is full of caviar, while the male floats behind her and keeps close to the egg deposit. At the same time, males change their appearance.
On the pectoral fins, their notches become clearer, and the gill covers are covered with small bulges.
Before breeding fish give protein live food, with which you can expect healthy offspring. Crank and daphnias are replaced by minced meat.
Orand cease to feed the day before spawning.
The aquarist will need to purchase a spawn with a volume of 50–100 l. Sand is poured at the bottom with a slope to one wall. The protective grid is established, dense thickets of plants with soft leaves and stems are planted. The water should be soft, and the temperature should be set lower by several degrees than in the main tank.
You also need to take care of good lighting, filtration and aeration.
Fertility from 2 to 10 thousand eggs, after 2 days the larvae hatch.
One female and two males are planted in the spawning ground. Among males, those with short fins should be selected.
Such fish are more nimble, and their tails will not be damaged by plants.
Usually spawning begins in the morning and lasts for several hours. When it is over, the fish are returned to the former aquarium, and in the spawn they turn down the water.
Caviar can be transferred to smaller containers. From whitish and dimmed unfertilized eggs should immediately get rid of, because they pollute the water.
Snails will cope well with this task.
Caviar should be well lit, but it can not be overheated. Tanks should not be placed under the direct rays of the sun. Fry hatch in 3-4 days.
As food they are given live dust. Young individuals, as they grow, are divided by size into different aquariums, otherwise larger ones will eat smaller ones.
If all the necessary conditions are met, Oranda is not sick and feels comfortable in an artificial reservoir. When water is polluted and fluid parameters change, fish can become infected with fin rot caused by pathogenic flora.
Due to overpopulation of the reservoir with different fish oranda can have ichthyophthyriosis. The disease is characterized by the manifestation of small whitish grains on the body of the aquarium pet.
It can occur at low water temperatures. Ichthyophthyriosis can be cured in the early stages.
And in the aquarium it will be necessary to improve the state of the aquatic environment and, if possible, resettle numerous inhabitants in different capacities.
In the tank, elements of decor and primer with sharp edges are undesirable – fish can be very traumatized.
Often, oranda has inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, which is caused by overeating. Experts advise to feed it with specialized live and vegetable feed, otherwise this disease can not be avoided.
Often, large fish dig in the ground and seize grains of sand and small pebbles with their mouths. Unfortunately, in this case they can not be saved.
For an aquarium, it is preferable to use coarse soil, which the fish will not be able to pass through the mouth.
With regular water purification, maintaining optimal temperature conditions and proper feeding, shishiga-shira will not get sick and will live for many years.
Orange fish is not recommended for beginners. Their hood is often affected by infections, bacteria, and fungi if pets are kept in poor conditions.
In addition, it is difficult for them to maintain a balanced diet, thanks to which they remain healthy. Before buying, even experienced aquarists will need advice on proper maintenance and care of these fish.
