Content of African cichlids

Colorful freshwater fish have long been grown at home. Bright African cichlids are very curious and friendly to humans, therefore, they are deservedly popular with aquarium fans. There are no universal rules of content suitable for each individual.

In order for pets not to cause trouble, it is important to understand the requirements of a particular type.

Bright African cichlids are very curious and friendly to humans.

The majestic beauties from Africa have the individuality and intelligence that allows you to remember the owner, to become attached to him. The ancestors of unique creatures lived in salty sea water, although now most of the species prefer to live in freshwater pools.

A large group occupies the eastern regions of the hot continent, and a huge variety is found in the Great Lakes. Locals use species as commercial fish.

The largest individual grows to almost 1 m in length, while the smallest one barely exceeds 2.5 cm.

Many species of African cichlids live in such bodies of water.: Nyasa, Tanganyika, Victoria. Lake Nyasa was formed in the fracture of a moving tectonic plate, so the water is slammed and contains a huge amount of minerals.

Tanganyika is a large lake, which is often called the sea. Stable oxygen-saturated environment.

Victoria’s basin is shallow, and many groups of fish have become extinct from interfering with the human ecosystem.

Most species of African cichlids are predators, although vegetarians are also found. It is possible to learn representatives on the extended body and a noticeable color.

In nature, individuals live to the age of twenty-five, but under aquarium conditions, life is reduced and lasts from 5 to 17.

A huge variety of fish depends on the range. There are both “exclusive” breeds of one reservoir, and “universal inhabitants”. The colorful representatives of Lake Nyasa are divided into two volume groups:

  1. Mbuna Harmless herbivorous fish prefer to settle on the rocks with dense thickets. In search of food “loosen” the bottom and uproot the vegetation. These include such varieties as pseudotrophyus, labidochromis, trophyops and others.
  2. Carnivorous representatives love coastal parts of lakes and underwater reefs. Eat small “neighbors”, do not hesitate to engage in cannibalism. Grow up to twenty-five centimeters in length, so for a comfortable life you need a large aquarium. The group includes such pets as bukkohromis, letrinops and aulonakar.

Mbuna – harmless herbivorous fish prefer to settle on the rocks with dense thickets.

Lake Tanganyika is inhabited by African cichlids, whose species prefer to live both in the surf zone and in the muddy bottom layer. Home lovers know such breeds., as:

  • “Blue princess”;
  • trophies;
  • shellfish lamprologus.

Representatives of the Victoria reservoir get along well with their neighbors from Lake Nyasa, but they behave aggressively with fish from Tanganyika. The most famous are black nanochromis and brown haplochromis.

Dwarf species come from West African lakes. Peaceful bright pets easily adapt to life in a confined space and do not terrorize other individuals.

Among tiny specimens, pelvic chromis and kribensis are very popular.

Bright African cichlids, the content of which will not cause major problems for aquarists, develop without problems in the aquarium. Large species need a lot of space (from 100 liters per pair), otherwise they will constantly conflict.

Miniature varieties settle in the lower layers, so they need a fifty-liter container.

The average acidity of water for fish is 8.5 units. For representatives of Lake Nyasa, the pH is set in the range from 7.7 to 8.7, and the residents of Tanganyika raise the value to 9.3.

If the fluid does not meet the requirements, the pets do not multiply, the color changes and the disease is activated. Heat-loving exotics do not like cold and sudden changes, the recommended temperature is from +24 to +27 degrees.

Preparing an aquarium for new guests, it is necessary to equip it with a filter. Cichlids do not tolerate contaminated liquid, which requires every week to change one third of the volume to fresh.

Pelvicahromis love poking around in the ground, so the elements of the mixture should not have sharp edges. Plants are firmly attached to the bottom or choose varieties with powerful roots, otherwise active fish dig up everything.

African guests are very quarrelsome, so the joint content is limited to eels and mail catfish, fighting and barbs. Each individual has personality and temperament, and it is difficult to predict behavior.

It is forbidden to plant in the same container with goldfish and long-finite scalars. Predators are dangerous for small neighbors:

The menu of carnivorous representatives consists of protein, therefore in the conditions of the aquarium all variants of live and frozen feed, dry mixes are allowed. To increase the intensity of color in the dish add carotene.

Vegetarians consume special ready-made rations and vegetation:

  • duckweed;
  • spirulina;
  • scalded salad;
  • vegetables (carrots, cucumber, zucchini).

Subject to all the rules of keeping breeding African aquarium fish in captivity is not difficult. Spawning takes place even in the total capacity, although it is dangerous for the neighbors.

Zealous parents aggressively guard the future of offspring and fry, so the professionals are seeding individuals into a separate container.

Some species lay their eggs on the stones, while others bear in the mouth. The pronounced instinct makes you steal “raw materials” from the rest of the pets and take care of yourself.

Large individuals often form stable pairs for the rest of their lives, while the rest live in communities with a harem and an alpha male.

Embryos develop due to nutrients in the eggs, and after birth, they begin to eat small zooplankton. To grow the fry without any problems, it is better to put the “mother” with a brood in a separate dish.

The female becomes less aggressive, and the larger “relatives” will not destroy the young.

African african aquarium cichlids are unusual fish that will decorate a homely pond. Knowing the characteristics of the content and nutrition, it is easy to avoid problems in breeding.

Curious exotic pets will delight the host for a long time.
