Content, care and reproduction trophy trotus star

This graceful cichlid lives in the rocky coastal part of the African Lake Tanganyika. Currently, it is listed in the Red Book of the Union of Conservation of Nature with the status of “VU” (vulnerable).

The trophy star has got its name due to its unusual color, which is different in young and adult individuals. For the first time, these fish were presented at an exhibition in Germany, where they made a real sensation and became a bestseller.

Star trophy, or Duboisi trophy, – this is a graceful fish with a large head and disproportionately short torso. Its length does not exceed 12 cm. At home, the tropheus swims among the rocks and hides in caves.

It feeds on algae and small invertebrates that inhabit the surface of stones. There is not too much vegetation in these places, and the fish has to move a lot to find food for itself.

In natural conditions, trophus lives alone, occasionally in pairs.

For the first time, these cichlids were described in the fifties of the 20th century by the scientist ichthyologist M. J. Marlier, who at that time was studying the fauna of Lake Tanganyika. These fish are endemics of the lake, they no longer live anywhere in the world.

In young individuals, the coloring of the body is very spectacular – black with white and blue peas. With age, it gradually changes: black and white spots disappear, and colored stripes appear on the body.

Because of these differences, fish of different ages seem to be separate species.

The heads of adult trophyus have a blue or blue color, the back of the body and tail are dark blue or black. In the middle there is a bright yellow stripe, which stands out sharply on the main background.

There are several types of trophus Duboishi, but all have this contrasting band.

Sexual dimorphism in fish is not pronounced. In males more upturned nose and bright color.

They grow more females, but this does not always happen. Females are a little lighter than males and grow slower. Males carefully protect their territory from strangers.

Experts believe that for the fish the main thing is not so much to keep the boundaries as to eliminate possible rivals.

Under natural conditions, the trophus population is small, although they are not commercial fish, but in the last century, a huge number of fish were caught due to the high demand from aquarists.

Starfish trophies are quite aggressive fishes. Although it is believed that they exhibit less aggression than other cichlids, they are usually kept in a species aquarium.

A group of 10 fish can be kept in a 100-liter tank, and the male should be alone. If the group consists of 15–20 individuals, two of which are males, then the volume of the aquarium should be at least 250–300 l. A large number of females is necessary in order to distribute the aggression of the males.

In the formed group should not be placed new individuals, as this will lead to fights and the death of newcomers.

For the content of the fish is of great importance to the water quality in the aquarium. Under natural conditions, they live in clean, oxygen-rich lake waters with stable parameters, and even small deviations from natural conditions can lead to their illness and death.

This is the main difficulty of keeping trophus. The following parameters will be optimal for them:

  • hardness – from 10 to 20 dH;
  • temperature – from +25 to +27 ° С;
  • acid-base balance of 7.5-8.5 Ph.

Water hardness can be increased by using pieces of marble or limestone placed on the bottom. The content of nitrites and nitrates should be low – cichlids very poorly tolerate elevated levels. In the aquarium install powerful filters with high performance, including biological.

Water is replaced twice a week by no more than 15%. Replacement must be done very carefully.

The aquarium is equipped with intensive aeration.

In nature, tropheus live in clean, oxygen-rich lake waters with stable parameters.

Many experienced aquarists monitor water quality with the help of special tests, the results of which are graphs. Even the smallest deviation from the optimal parameters harms the fish.

Thus, lowering the temperature by only 2 degrees causes a cold in the trophus, from which they die.

Soil does not matter much. It can be chosen so that it fits the overall design of the aquarium. This may be coarse sand or pebbles.

Vegetation is not required much. It is advisable to choose the hard leaf species of algae.

In the aquarium, you need to install a lot of shelters. It can be grottoes, caves, snags. They must be greater than the number of fish at least one shelter.

Lighting should be such that its intensity contributes to the growth of algae – no other requirements.
