So the joyful moment in the life of every aquarist has come – buying fish in an aquarium. The range of fish is very large and diverse.

In this article I will try to focus on the basic rules of compatibility of aquarium fish. What would I pay attention to when buying fish?

Do not rely on the advice of sellers selling in specialized stores. Like any trade worker, it is important for them to sell as many goods as possible at the highest prices.

Before purchasing a fish, you must first make a choice, write down the names of the fish you like, read basic information about your favorites on the content parameters and the behavior of the fish in the aquarium.

Compatibility of fish in terms of content

There are cold-water and warm-water fish, fish that love soft water, and vice versa, hard-water fish. Fish that need thickets of living plants, and fish that tear, dig and eat all the plants in the aquarium.

Many aquarists may argue that they say cold-water blue neons (temperature of 18-22 degrees) live well with the discus, which needs a temperature of 28-30 degrees.

I agree, they live, but with such a high temperature of water in the aquarium, all the life processes of neons are accelerated, their lifespan is reduced, which is already small – only 2-3 years with good conditions, as a result, neons quickly age and die.

COMPATIBILITY OF GOLDEN FISHES

Compatible guppies, what other fish get along with them?

Further, softwater fish, such as the American cichlids, will not feel comfortable in hard water. They will live, but be fruitful.

This is in question. I will make a reservation that there are exceptions to the rule: professional avkaryumisty easily breed an angelfish in those cities and regions where very hard water flows from the tap, with a hardness index of 30-35. But such a dilution requires experience and material costs associated with constant water softening (special preparations, for example: Tetra ToruMin, reverse osmosis installation, etc.)

Fish feel very well when an aquarist creates conditions for them that are close to natural. So it was with me when I changed the soil in the form of granite chips, which increased the rigidity of the aquarium water, to neutral soil in an aquarium with discus.

The coloring of these wonderful fish, which are rightly called the Kings of the aquarium, has become brighter, the fish have become more mobile and the most important indicator is the formation of pairs and regular spawning.

Therefore, if you have very hard water flowing from the tap, consider buying hard-water fish, such as African cichlids, platillas, guppies, mollies, swordtails, etc.

Compatibility of fish with live plants. If you want an aquarium with a large number of live plants, then I do not recommend buying goldfish, African cichlids, labo, metinnis, tetragonopteruses, African eels, tilapias, etc.

Some fish perceive plants as food, others like to dig and dig up the soil, thus digging up the plants, damaging the tender roots.

This also applies to catfish, most of whom like to dig in the ground. Ancystrus, in the absence of herbal supplements in the diet, can damage the tender leaves of aquarium plants, filling them with a lack of plant foods.

Compatibility of fish size

The basic rule is this: it is recommended to keep large fish with large ones, and small ones with small ones. Any, even the most peaceful fish, will not miss the opportunity to eat another fish that fits in her mouth.

There is an opinion that if a large fish is planted in the aquarium with fry, then, growing, it will not offend its smaller neighbors. Alas, for me personally, such experiments have not justified themselves.

When a larger individual grew, small fish went to her food.

South American cichlids

Compatibility of fish on the nature of food

This is rarely paid attention, but it would not hurt to take this indicator into account. There are herbivorous and predatory fish.

Features of their power come from the name.

Any herbivorous fish will not give up animal feed, for example, bloodworms.

The peculiarity of herbivorous fish is that they have a small ventricle, the intestines are long, adapted for digesting plant foods.

If such fish are often fed with bloodworms, then over time problems with digestion and liver will begin.

This indicator is especially important to consider when compatibility of cichlids: the majority of African cichlids are animal-eaters, and their combined content with Tanganyki cichlids, trophaus, whose diet is algal fouling and other plant foods is not recommended.

Predatory fish, for example, the African black knife, it is better not to keep in one aquarium with small and peaceful fish. This nocturnal predator will hunt any fish that it can swallow.

From the aquarium with discus, I had to deposit one ancistrus. He, the only one of the three antsistrus living in this aquarium, stuck to the large body of the discus and injured him with a suction mouth. Such damage can be very dangerous for fish.

What was missing in his diet? Fish scales? riddle.

I think this is a feature of his character.

Compatibility of fish on the nature of behavior

This is a big and important topic. A number of fish are very aggressive, especially, aggression is manifested in the period of mating games, spawning and care for offspring. These fish include almost all tsikhlovye.

Most cichlids are large, aggressive (very aggressive during spawning) and predatory fish. They in no case can not be combined with peaceful, small fish.

Cychlasmas: species, content, compatibility, reproduction

Among the fish there are, for example, barbs, who will not miss the opportunity to tweak another fish at the fins. Therefore, they are not recommended to contain with veil fish that have beautiful and long fins.

Therefore, in the aquarium you need to keep fish of similar nature.

For example, frisky and playful fish danios, it is not appropriate to look next to the majestic discussions and scalars. With their sharp movements, they can scare the discus. Once, I became a witness of how, during a sudden movement around the aquarium, the discus darted in different directions, and one of them, quite noticeably, crashed into the glass of the aquarium, and the other, darted upwards, hitting the aquarium cover.

By the way, this feature of discus, you need to consider when choosing the location of the aquarium. I want to note that my aquarium with discussions is installed in a very busy place of the apartment.

After some time, the fish are accustomed to and do not react to sudden movements.

Selecting fish in an aquarium according to the nature of their behavior, do not forget to take into account such features that many fish like to hide in shelters. It is necessary to ensure the presence of shelters in the aquarium in the form of grottoes and caves.

Snags in an aquarium, for example, are important for catfish. In addition to shelters, snags are part of the diet.

For some fish that love to dig in the ground, the fraction of this soil and its processing is important. For such fish, sand with rounded edges is preferable.

There are a number of other parameters – the demands on lighting, the rate of flow of water in an aquarium: there are fish who love standing bodies of water, and fish that inhabit rivers with a fast current of water, the degree of salinity of water, etc.

I want to note that you can not stick with the choice of fish, only one of the compatibility parameters. You need to take them into account or try to take into account the complex. Do not forget when choosing fish to take into account the volume of your aquarium and the size of the fish in adult condition.

It is important.

To facilitate the adaptation of fish, to new conditions, you can use the preparation, minimizing the stress of fish from transportation and relocation: Tetra AquaSafe, Tetra Vital, Tetra EasyBalance, Tetra Nitrate Minus.

In any case, the choice is always yours, this is your experience.

Most importantly, if you try to take into account the peculiarities of the content and behavior of the fish you choose, to create comfortable conditions for their existence, they will delight you for many years with their beauty and health, and many of them will delight you with numerous offspring!

Compatibility of aquarium fish: tips and tricks

Selection of fish for your aquarium is a very interesting task, but not easy. The choice is truly huge, and we have to take into account not only the features of the appearance of the fish, but also many other factors.

One of them is their compatibility, that is, the ability of different species to live together and feel comfortable in the general aquarium. The main principles of this compatibility will be discussed in this article.

The reasons for the impossibility of sharing some species of fish – and any other living creatures – are intuitively understandable: they live in nature in different climatic zones, in different conditions, and even in the case of close proximity they can be in different relationships with each other, for example, being a predator and the victim. And if we are philosophical about the fact that in the natural environment of the environment some fish eat others, few people want to witness such a picture in their aquarium.

In order to avoid a situation in which fish in an aquarium suffer from their neighborhood, in selecting them you need to know and take into account several basic rules.

Fish species can be:

  • fully compatible;
  • completely incompatible;
  • conditionally (limited) compatible.

The first two categories are clear, the third includes species whose coexistence is possible under certain conditions (such as the size of an aquarium, its proper zoning, the presence of shelters, or even particular features of character and life experience of specific fish individuals). I must say that sometimes – very rarely! – in aquariums, somehow, completely incompatible species manage to get along, but these are exceptions.

To facilitate the selection of fish there are species compatibility tables, they are in the special literature and on many aquarium sites. But let us try to formulate the principles by which the compatibility of the fish is determined.

Basic principles of aquarium fish species compatibility

What to do if you really want to populate low-compatible species in an aquarium?

Type of aquarium fish and compatibility of different species (table)

The species compatibility table clearly shows which animals are fully compatible with each other, incompatible, or partially compatible under certain conditions. Consider the principles on which the table is built.

  1. Conditions should be well suited for all inhabitants of the aquarium.
  2. You can not put together a predator and prey.
  3. Type of aquarium fish with a calm and sluggish nature should not coexist with fast and active fish. They’ll starve and get stressed.
  4. The inhabitants of the aquarium should be proportionate. Even the most peaceful fish will eat everyone who fits into her mouth.
  5. Some fish show aggression and can attack both neighbors and members of their own species. It is necessary to take into account the peculiarity of behavior.
  6. One type of aquarium fish can not live without a flock of their own kind, the other – without a pair, and the third prefers loneliness. This should not be forgotten if you want to avoid fights or stress.

So, consider what types of aquarium fish are, some aspects of their content and compatibility. In one article it is impossible to describe all types of fish, so we will focus on the most popular representatives and the general characteristics of groups.

Apistogram dwarf cichlids are popular species of aquarium fish. Photos show that these little fish look like bright tropical butterflies.

Apistograms do not need a large amount of aquarium, plants do not damage and are quite calm. They can be kept with other peaceful fish – sword-bearers, patzilia, guppies, mollies, neons, rassets, tetras, small catfish, barbs. But small shrimp will be happy to eat even dwarf cichlids.

Males apistogramm in a small aquarium will be aggressive to each other, so you can keep a couple or a harem.

Another popular type of aquarium fish is the scalar. These fish are also thermophilic, do not destroy plants. But they will eat up all the small neighbors (neon, rasbor), and the aggressive fish will cut off their beautiful long fins (crests, denison, many types of barbs).

For these reasons, the list of neighbors is small – unhurried gourami, mollies, petilles, cherry barbs, some soma.

The kings of the freshwater aquarium – the discus – are very demanding to the conditions and nutrition of the fish. In addition, the preferred high temperature – 28-31 ° C. Far from all plants and animals can withstand such heat.

They are compatible with discus: catfish tarakatum, clown combat, Ramirezi’s apistogram, red-bearing tetra, red neons. Discus gentle fish, prone to stress and various diseases, so it is better to abandon any neighbors.

As for other types of cichlids, such as the parrot, handsome chromis, labidochromis ellou, black-striped cichlid, astronotus and others, it is difficult to pick up the neighbors. These fish are territorial, aggressive, they need shelter.

They dig the ground, pull out all the plants. Two males in a small volume will constantly conflict, so you can keep them in pairs or harems, with other active fish, able to stand up for themselves.

They are compatible only with other cichlids, and because of intraspecific aggression, it is better to choose neighbors with a different color.

Neons are small freshwater fish of the Kharatsin family. In the wild, they are very active and brisk, able to quickly hide from predators, maneuvering among thick plants. Body size reaches 3 cm in length, life expectancy depends on water temperature: from 1.5 years to 3 years.

Behavioral characteristics: due to a peaceful disposition, they can live together with each other in a flock, as well as with other species of fish. Guppies and neons, petsyli and neons, catfish and neons get along well in the same aquarium.

Such compatibility is beneficial for novice aquarists, since these types of fish will definitely not harm each other.

What else should be considered in compatibility? Males of neons are brighter in color than females, the contrast of scales depends on the species.

But one thing unites them – a horizontal strip passes through the body, which glitters with “neon” shimmering even in darkness. This feature can be attractive to predatory fish and those who do not welcome next to their more beautiful neighbors.

So settle a flock of neons of 5-7 fish and more in a spacious tank with shelters so that in case of unforeseen attacks, they can hide in time.

Neons are characterized by calm behavior, and only during the spawning season they become overly active and cocky. Therefore, choose as your neighbors for them fish are not predatory, but omnivorous or herbivorous, balanced and not very playful.

There are a number of rules that are important to ensure that the compatibility of neons with other fish in the aquarium is the most successful.

Look at the successful version of the general aquarium with neons.

  1. Compatibility is possible between fish that live in the wild in a similar environment. Neon fish live in water at a temperature of 18-24 ° C, pH 5.5-7.5 pH, hardness 8-20o. Therefore, their neighbors in the aquarium should be adapted to the same parameters.
  2. Neon cannot be settled with large predators that feed exclusively on meat and carrion. Otherwise, peace-loving neons will become prey for them – the fins can be cut off, at a minimum.
  3. You can not settle in the general aquarium fish large and small, such an incompatibility can cause severe stress, or loss of bright body color.
  4. Choose neighbors, similar in temperament. Small and nimble fish will feel comfortable in the company of calm and not fast fish. What is it for? The fact is that the activity of fish can cause fluctuations in water, which can lead to stress.
  5. Neons are schooling fishes, not loners. They feel well in the company of the same kindred, the fish alone will not live long.

  • A territorial niche should be installed in the aquarium. That is, all types of fish should swim in certain layers of water – in the lower, middle or upper. So they will not interfere with each other. Neons, like somiki corridor, swim in the bottom layer of the aquatic environment.
  • Neons love plants not as a delicacy, but as scenery or shelter, among which you can swim or hide. If other aquarium fish gnaw leaves, or are prone to such sabotage, neons can suffer greatly.
  • During all diseases, the fish must be treated, and the treatment methods may not be the same for all fish. Some tolerate treatment with salt, copper, and others – no. Neons are not particularly sensitive to copper-based drugs. Therefore, their neighbors can become fish with the same portability. Then the treatment can take place in the general aquarium.
  • Neon get on well in the home pond with such aquarium fish: Pecillia (guppies, swordtails, mollies, placiums), speckled catfish, panda, tetra, danio rheo, labo, rastar, minors, gourami, iris, pulcheras, minors, hyacinths, sweaters, laboratories, rasomes, minors, gourami, iris, pulcheras, minors, marines, sweaters, minors, gourami, iris, pulcheras, minors, and fish. Consider compatibility with some fish in more detail.

See how well the scalar and neons get along in one aquarium.

Somiki corridor are excellent neighbors for small haracin ones, live together in the bottom layers of the aquarium, and collect remnants of uneaten food. The corridors are innocuous fish, also small and peaceful, they love to watch their neighbors without harming them.

Rasbory – can make an excellent company neon. Among them: the actual rasbory, boraras, microassemblies and trigonustigma, some of them belong to the family Karpovye.

Fishes of the Family Petsilievye (guppies, molly, sword-bearers, petsilia) – peacefully cohabit with haracin. Swordtails also have small body size, but males may be excessively active. It should be borne in mind that more than two swordtail males sometimes pursue smaller neighbors, especially during the spawning period.

With insufficient feeding, in the cramped, small place for swimming, the swordtails become unbearable. So that these fish do not terrorize small neons, the aquarium should be spacious, with a sufficient number of plants and shelters.

Neons are poorly compatible with such fish:

    1. Large catfish, cichlids, barbs, astronotus, cockerels, koi carps – those who live in cool water, or have a predatory, aggressive behavior.
    2. Goldfish – they live in cool water, and are aggressive towards bright fish and their offspring.
    3. Angelfish – can live with neons only under the condition that they all grew up with the age of young animals. But neon-stranger scalar will be perceived as food. Also during the mating season, the scalar will be aggressively inclined towards everyone, including these small fish.

In any interior aquarium adds elegance and comfort. Floating fish soothe and give pleasant emotions. Therefore, the content of this underwater world is not fashion, but the desire to decorate the atmosphere of your home in a special way.

Any aquarist needs to be aware of the concept of compatibility of aquarium fish.

Choosing representatives of the underwater world for an aquarium, it is important to know that there are many fish species and each has its own habitat conditions, behavior, water requirements, etc. Therefore, the main thing is not to make the most common mistake – to try to keep predators and harmless fish together in one aquarium. . For example, aggressive cichlids are unlikely to get along with calm guppies.

And this confirms the fact that the compatibility of fish in an aquarium requires close study.

Usually compatible aquarium fish is not difficult to pick up, but some novice aquarists attach little importance to this, and as a result unpleasant moments occur. So some representatives of the water kingdom can become dangerous not only for neighbors in the aquarium, but even for the owner himself, for example, electric eel or piranha.

And some fish, such as pacu, red-tailed catfish – simply grow too large.

The task of an aquarist is to find out as much information as possible about a particular type that it is going to contain. After watching the video, literature, studying a special table of compatibility of aquarium fish should make a thoughtful and informed decision.

In this case, is this or that fish suitable for an aquarium, will it be a good “neighbor”, do they comply with all compatibility parameters.

Experts carefully studied the behavior and habits of fish. The analysis revealed the reasons why a certain type of fish may not be suitable for a particular aquarium. This means that the fish is too large for this tank or in comparison with other fish living in this aquatic “dwelling”.

Even if a large fish does not eat small ones, the younger brothers will feel uncomfortable. Scientificly speaking, the compatibility of fish in an aquarium is a rather thin area that does not tolerate trifles.

Fish should not be too small compared to other fish, as they can simply eat it. There are species of fish that require more territory than usual.

For example, a parrot loves space. Paying attention to the compatibility of aquarium fish, you need to know the behavior of predatory fish. Some by nature eat other smaller ones.

In their native element, their habitual habitat, such behavior is characteristic of the representative of the aquatic world who feed on fish. Many omnivorous individuals also eat other fish, smaller than themselves.

It so happens that the fish bites off other people’s fins. Most often, this trend is observed if there are fish with long, bright fins in the aquarium. Or, on the contrary, the fish itself has a “unique image”, which is a temptation for some fish that are accustomed to bite off other people’s fins.

To study these points helps the table of compatibility of aquarium fish. These data will give important information about the behavior and character of the fish.
