Goldfish deserve popularity and love among aquarists, beginners and experienced. But some people mistakenly call all similar breeds goldfish, but this species is divided into varieties, for example, voiletail, lionhead, oranda, bubble of the eye. Attention deserves a comet fish.
This fish is different from the rest of the extraordinary appearance.
The comet gold fish is a variety of goldfish bred artificially by aquarists. It is still not known whether the birthplace of these fish is in America or in Japan. The first descriptions, resembling a comet aquarium fish, date back to 1834.
By the end of 1930-1950, the breed had a general prevalence.
Breed comet is divided into another couple:
- Calico comet. Differs in more tiny sizes – only 5 cm, a long tail and spotty coloring.
- Red comet The red comet has a bright red-scarlet color and a less graceful tail.
- Black comet Goldfish comet black color has a coal color. The tail is more paired, does not have a wide cut.
- Yellow comet. The yellow variety is often confused with the goldfish itself, but they differ in color, because the yellow variety does not have a golden reflux, the body is longer, and the fins are shorter.
The cometary aquarium fish is distinguished by an elongated, elongated body, which ends in a long veiled tail. The tail often exceeds body length by 2 or 3 times, reminds fluttering ribbons.
The body is flattened, elongated, without roundness of the abdomen (excluding females during the breeding season) or a curved back. The length of the fish is 14–20 cm.
The fins of the comet are also elongated, especially the calico comet is different.
Body color is orange or reddish, often with light spots on the sides. Especially valuable are representatives whose body and fin colors are different.
The nature of the goldfish comets non-conflict, peace-loving. In the behavior there are no special features of territoriality, aggression towards other underwater inhabitants.
Pets adapt quickly when they get into a new habitat, so there will be no problems with the purchase.
Comets have a rather long life span. Under favorable conditions, the life expectancy of pets is 10–15 years.
Reach large sizes. A small pond is more suitable for keeping conditions than an aquarium.
But with the proper arrangement of the aquarium and living conditions, pets will feel comfortable in the home tank.
Fish differ in the requirements for cleanliness of the aquarium, so it is required to replace the water 1-2 times a week by a quarter of the volume.
Aquarium with fish is chosen based on the size of the body of the inhabitants. For a couple of representatives to live in, purchase an aquarium with a volume of 100 liters. In the aquarium make shelters and secluded places where pets hide or rest.
For example, install snags, make grottoes or hollows from the ground, plant vegetation with wide leaves. These are quite active inhabitants, so equip an aquarium with a tight lid, because fish easily jump out and die.
Comfortable water temperature is 20-24 degrees, but pets even tolerate temperatures of 18 to 30 degrees Celsius. Water hardness is 6–16, and acidity does not exceed 7 units.
To chemical impurities in water is not particularly sensitive, if their content does not exceed the norm.
This breed likes to dig up the roots in the ground, so when choosing vegetation, give preference to plants with a strong root system, or choose artificial plants.
Decorating an aquarium is not considered a necessary action, but it decorates an aquarium, making it more aesthetic. And the scenery is shelter.
For comets, install snags, branches, houses bought in pet shops, make a stone embankment. The main condition for decorating an aquarium is the absence of sharp corners and too uneven surfaces.
This is important because these inhabitants are decorative and their body is tender, easily damaged.
Comet fish love to break through the ground. To prevent the water in the aquarium from becoming contaminated quickly due to rising turbidity from the bottom, choose medium or coarse soil, for example, gravel, granite or basalt chips, marble soil, pebbles, coarse sand.
It is also important that the soil particles do not have sharp parts that the fish will hurt. Therefore, preference is often given to coarse sand or pebbles.
The comets are not very clean, and this makes it difficult to keep the aquarium clean at all times. After all, fish need clean water without residues of life and food.
Maintain clean water will help a powerful filter.
Fish prefer water saturated with plenty of oxygen, so install an aeration device, such as a compressor.
With the content of comets, lighting is given a significant role. The color of the fish depends on the quantity and brightness of the light, because with a lack of light the fish turns pale and dims.
It is recommended to install the aquarium near the window, in which a sufficient amount of sunlight gets for 10-12 hours. If there is not enough sunlight, equip the aquarium with additional good lighting.
They are considered omnivorous fish with a good appetite. Overeating of fish often becomes a serious problem.
Feed your pets a balanced and fortified high protein food, vegetable food.
The diet consists of live food (daphnia, bloodworm, earthworms), vegetable supplements (dandelion greens, lettuce, spinach, duckweed). Dry food for goldfish is also used as feed.
Feed is allowed and cooked porridges (buckwheat, rice).
It is important to follow the rules of feeding and feeding mode of fish. Feeding of the comet is done 2 times a day, in the morning and in the evening.
Eaten food after half an hour after eating is removed from the aquarium.
High compatibility with most non-aggressive types. Comet fish most often are indifferent to other inhabitants.
Low compatibility of fish with territorial, large fish. Tsikhlovye, carp, labyrinth fish are not suitable for the neighborhood.
For example, angelfish and discus will hunt comets, and comets from barbs and danios will suffer attacks and biting off of fins.
They are also incompatible with some fish due to their incompatibility with conditions, for example, these goldfish prefer acidic water with low temperatures, and tropical fish live in water with temperatures above 26 degrees.
High compatibility with ternition, catfish, guppy, swordtails. Comets get along with everyone who does not attack them and has not too small sizes.
Prepare a separate spawning tank with a volume of 30–50 liters, where spawning and rearing of fry will occur. In the spawn sprinkle the ground and plant small-leaved plants.
For breeding choose a female and a pair of males over two years of age and deposited them in spawning. To stimulate spawning of comets, the water in the reservoir is increased by a couple of degrees.

To identify the male or female, each sex has its own characteristics.
- More active.
- Larger, larger.
- Brighter painted.
- Abdominal fins pointed.
- Anal opening convex.
- During spawning, the belly is rounded and swollen.
- Less active.
- Abdominal fins shortened and rounded.
- Solid area between the anus and abdomen.
- There is an outgrowth in the back of the abdomen.
- Anal opening concave.
- During spawning, they remain elongated and flattened, white stripes appear near the gills.
After grooming the males and fertilizing the calf, the female is able to sweep 10 thousand eggs. After spawning, the parents are transplanted back into the general aquarium, because they are able to eat eggs or fry. Fry hatch in 1-2 weeks, and become active and ready to consume feed after half a week.
They are fed daphnia, living dust.
- Overfeeding. If after feeding the fish turns upside down, the belly is swollen, it means that the fish overeat regularly. To help the fish, it is not fed for a couple of days and a weak solution of potassium permanganate is added to the water.
- Dropsy. When dropsy, the scales rise, wrinkle, bulge eyes appear, the back is bent. For treatment, set the diseased inhabitant in a separate container and replace part of the water daily, adding a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
- Scabies. Appears when water is poisoned, for example, by decomposing food. The symptom – the fish constantly rubs on rough surfaces, behaves nervously and sluggishly. To cure the fish, transfer it to a container with lightly salted and cool water.
- Changeling. The fish begins to swim up belly for no apparent reason. For treatment, the water level is reduced to 6 cm and the water is heated a couple of degrees. Feed only small live food.
Comets are considered interesting fish, which are curious to watch. Aquarists do not regret that they have acquired this graceful fish for themselves in an aquarium, because care for them is simple and reproduction does not require special knowledge.
