Unpretentious and amazing cockerel fish can decorate any aquarium. Their maintenance and breeding will not cause difficulties, so these residents of domestic ponds are so popular among beginners and professionals.
Males of almost all varieties are distinguished by bright veil fins, whereas cockere females look more modest.
Cockerel fish do not require special conditions of detention.
The cockerel, or Betta splendens, which, in Latin, sounds like a “fighting fish”, is not capricious and handsome, but rather aggressive. This typical labyrinth inhabitant is able to breathe atmospheric oxygen. The males and their distant relatives of the macropod were the first aquarium fish introduced to Europe from Asia.
Up to this point they have been bred for a long time in Malaysia and Thailand.
Recognition among home water lovers betta received thanks to their luxurious appearance, interesting behavior and ability to live in small tanks. They are also fairly easy to breed and cross, getting fry with completely new colors and fins.
Bettas can live in small aquariums.
For the first time information about the fighting fish appeared in books on ichthyology in 1910. In the wild, they can be found in the south of East Asia, in Vietnam and Cambodia, but Thailand is the birthplace of cockerels. Their Latin name Betta splendens is derived from the Javanese word Wuder Bettah, and in Asian countries these aquatic inhabitants are most often called pla-kad, which translates as “biting fish”.
It is worth noting that in Thailand they are called pla kat Khmer, which in Russian means “biting fish from the Khmer lands”.
In total, more than 70 species of cockerels are known; 10 more have not yet been studied and systematized. The genus Betta includes two groups of fish.
Representatives of the first of them raise offspring in nests from foam, and participants of the second bear fry in the mouth.
Chickens prefer habitat with stagnant water.
In the natural environment cockerels prefer to occupy standing lakes or reservoirs with a slow current and dense vegetation. They settle in canals, ponds, rivers, and even in rice fields.
Due to its ability to breathe atmospheric oxygen, fish can survive even in harsh conditions.
Petushki christened fighting because of their aggressive behavior. Males regularly arrange fights, which often end with the death of one of the combatants.
Wild representatives of the Betta clan were actively used in Thailand for fighting in order to amuse everyone.
Despite the wild temper, these fish are serious about fighting. If one of the opponents rises to the surface to take a breath of air, his enemy will patiently wait for his return and will never begin to slyly attack.
If three males are involved in the conflict, then one of them will stand aside and calmly wait for their turn until one of the fighters perishes or exhausts.
Chickens take fights very seriously
The wild form of fighting fish does not differ in decorative appearance. Its representatives have an elongated elongated body, short fins and brown or greenish scale colors.
However, domestic cockerels are very different from their fellows – they have chic and voluminous fins, with which the fish can catch on snag or algae and damage them.
Of course, decorative betta retained the foolish character of their ancestors, but at home they are held not because of their fighting qualities, but because of their chic appearance. Some artificially bred species are even considered collectible and have such a variety of colors and fin shapes that they cannot be listed and systematized.
With good care, such pets can live from 2 to 3 years and grow to 6-7 centimeters in length. Sex differences of males and females in cockerel fish are pronounced brightly.
Males are the largest representatives of the weaker sex and have brighter and larger fins. In addition, the Betta girl can be identified by a white grain located near the anal fin.
This is the egg-laying that occurs during spawning.
Petushki live 2-3 years
The differences between male and female cockerel should be considered in more detail, since this important information is useful in keeping and breeding fish. It should be noted that it is quite simple to distinguish them, since the sexual characteristics of the representatives of the Betta genus appear quite clearly.
- body size and structure;
- behavior features;
- the shape and size of the fins.
It should be understood that the differences between females and males of different species have their own criteria, which are important to consider when inspecting pets. Also, some signs depend on the age of the fish and the phase of their life.
Looking at the fish, you can see that the fins of the males are longer and larger than those of the females. This criterion is considered essential in determining sex, but it is not applicable if there are short-tailed cockerels in an aquarist’s reservoir. In this case, again you have to pay attention to the fin, but only on anal.
So, in boys they are elongated and elongated, and in girls they are short and round.
As already noted, adult females have egg deposition in the form of a small star right in front of the anus. But small fish do not have such a feature yet, so this feature should not be considered when buying teenagers.
