Cockerel fish: capricious and beautiful inhabitant of your aquarium

It is important to know with whom the fish gets on, and with whom the aquarium cockerels live poorly. As noted, the behavior of the fish is peculiar, they live well and alone, and therefore are particularly demanding on their neighbors.

Aquarian males do not get along with the following fish (compatible non-existent): makropody, discus, tsihlazomy chernopolosaya, Akari julidochromis, tetraodon, tilapia, kupanus, Astronotus, various types melanohromis, ktenopoma, pseudotropheus, parrot, julidochromis, piranha, lineatus and other fish .

But able to live in one aquarium and even friends with these fish: Algae, neon Donaciinae, platies, befortiya, Ancistrus, akantoftalmus, mollies black swordsman, gourami nagging, ornatus, ototsinklyus, pulhripinnis, Minor (all kinds), rasbora, rubrostigma, ternets, congos, botsia, brocade catfish, tarakatum, oturisom, platydoras, loricaria, siamese gastromizon, speckled catfish, other fish.

There are also some species of fish with which males often get along, but there may be fights or ragged fins. And these are guppies, neon, danios, macrognatus, labo, cardinal, lyalius, all types of scalar, ctenobrikon, spotted gouramis, barbs, gourami marble, pearl gouram and other fish.

The compatibility of the males with them is not rated very high. And in general, it is better not to put cockerels with them in one aquarium.

Back to content

The betta fish or cockerel (lat. Betta splendens) is unpretentious, handsome, but can slaughter the female and other males.

It is a typical labyrinth fish, that is, it can breathe atmospheric oxygen. It was the aquarium cockerel, and even his relative, the macropod, that were among the first aquarium fish that were brought to Europe from Asia.

But long before that moment, the fighting fish were already bred in Thailand and Malaysia.

Fish gained popularity for its luxurious appearance, interesting behavior and ability to live in small aquariums. And he is easily divorced and just as easily crossed, as a result – a lot of color variations, different in everything, from the color to the shape of the fins.

The wild form of the rooster does not shine with beauty – greenish or brown, with an oblong body and short fins. He received the name of the fighting fish for the fact that the males arrange furious fights with each other, which often end with the death of one of the opponents.

Wild form and to this day used in Thailand for fighting, although not already leading up to the complete destruction of one of the fish. Despite the fact that the fish are fierce fighters, they have a peculiar behavior in a fight.

If one of the males rises after the air during the battle, the second one will not touch it, but wait patiently until it returns. Also, if two males fight, the third does not interfere with them, but waits in the wings.

But those cockerels, which you will find on sale, are far from such fighting fish as their relatives. No, their character has not changed, they will also fight. The very concept of this fish has changed, because the current breeds must bear beauty, they have gorgeous fins, so long that they are damaged even by plants, not to mention fighting.

They are kept for beauty, gorgeous colors and equally gorgeous fins, and not for fighting qualities.

With the right neighbors, they are pretty livable. But during spawning, the male is extremely aggressive, and will attack any fish. Especially fish like him (even his female) or brightly colored.

Because of this, they usually keep one for an aquarium, or they pick up fish for him that he cannot offend. A male can be kept with a female, provided that the aquarium is large enough and the female has room to hide.
Attention! The cockerel is just great for beginners and those aquarists who can not afford a large aquarium. He needs the very minimum both in volume and in nutrition.

And he is unpretentious, strong, always on sale. Due to its labyrinth apparatus, it can survive in poor water for oxygen, and in very small aquariums.

If you have been to the market, you probably have seen how these fish are often sold in tiny banks. On the one hand, it speaks about unpretentiousness in maintenance and care, but on the other hand it is a bad example.

On how to choose the right aquarium for the cock you can read the link, there is nothing complicated there. It dwells in all layers of water, but prefers the upper ones.

It is very simple to keep it, for one fish, 15-20 liters will be enough, although this is a minimal amount, it still needs care. You should not keep it in a round aquarium, although it is a popular phenomenon.

It is better to have a rooster in an aquarium of 30 liters, with a heater and always covered, as they can jump out.

If you do not contain one, but other fish, you need an even more spacious aquarium, with shelters for the female, preferably with dimmed light and floating plants. From regular care, it is imperative to change the water, about 25% of the volume per week, since the accumulated decay products will primarily affect the state of the fins.

As for the filter, it does not hurt, but oxygen (aeration) is not needed, it breathes from the surface of the water.

As for water parameters, they can be very different, only temperature is crucial, since it is a tropical species. In general, it is recommended: temperature 24-29C, ph: 6.0-8.0, 5 – 35 dGH.

Who do cockerels get along with? In general, it is well suited for keeping with many fish.

Definitely it does not need to be kept with fish who like to tear off fins, for example with dwarf tetradons. However, he himself can do the same, so that it should not be kept with voile species.

They themselves sometimes attack other fish, but this is a mistake in identification, apparently taking them from their relatives.

Attention! What exactly you should not do is to put two males in one aquarium, as they will definitely fight. Females are less aggressive, although they have a strict hierarchy.

One male can be kept with several females, provided that there are enough shelters in the aquarium for the latter. Good neighbors are speckled catfish, cardinals, akantoftalmusy, viviparous.

Neons are small freshwater fish of the Kharatsin family. In the wild, they are very active and brisk, able to quickly hide from predators, maneuvering among thick plants.

Body size reaches 3 cm in length, life expectancy depends on water temperature: from 1.5 years to 3 years. Behavioral characteristics: due to a peaceful disposition, they can live together with each other in a flock, as well as with other species of fish.

Guppies and neons, petsyli and neons, catfish and neons get along well in the same aquarium. Such compatibility is beneficial for novice aquarists, since these types of fish will definitely not harm each other.

What else should be considered in compatibility? Males of neons are brighter in color than females, the contrast of scales depends on the species.

But one thing unites them – a horizontal strip passes through the body, which glitters with “neon” shimmering even in darkness. This feature can be attractive to predatory fish and those who do not welcome next to their more beautiful neighbors.

So settle a flock of neons of 5-7 fish and more in a spacious tank with shelters so that in case of unforeseen attacks, they can hide in time.

Neons are characterized by calm behavior, and only during the spawning season they become overly active and cocky. Therefore, choose as your neighbors for them fish are not predatory, but omnivorous or herbivorous, balanced and not very playful.

There are a number of rules that are important to ensure that the compatibility of neons with other fish in the aquarium is the most successful.

Look at the successful version of the general aquarium with neons.

  1. Compatibility is possible between fish that live in the wild in a similar environment. Neon fish live in water at a temperature of 18-24 ° C, pH 5.5-7.5 pH, hardness 8-20o. Therefore, their neighbors in the aquarium should be adapted to the same parameters.
  2. Neon cannot be settled with large predators that feed exclusively on meat and carrion. Otherwise, peace-loving neons will become prey for them – the fins can be cut off, at a minimum.
  3. You can not settle in the general aquarium fish large and small, such an incompatibility can cause severe stress, or loss of bright body color.
  4. Choose neighbors, similar in temperament. Small and nimble fish will feel comfortable in the company of calm and not fast fish. What is it for? The fact is that the activity of fish can cause fluctuations in water, which can lead to stress.
  5. Neons are schooling fishes, not loners. They feel well in the company of the same kindred, the fish alone will not live long.

  • A territorial niche should be installed in the aquarium. That is, all types of fish should swim in certain layers of water – in the lower, middle or upper. So they will not interfere with each other. Neons, like somiki corridor, swim in the bottom layer of the aquatic environment.
  • Neons love plants not as a delicacy, but as scenery or shelter, among which you can swim or hide. If other aquarium fish gnaw leaves, or are prone to such sabotage, neons can suffer greatly.
  • During all diseases, the fish must be treated, and the treatment methods may not be the same for all fish. Some tolerate treatment with salt, copper, and others – no. Neons are not particularly sensitive to copper-based drugs. Therefore, their neighbors can become fish with the same portability. Then the treatment can take place in the general aquarium.
  • Akantoftalmus Kühl is a charming aquarium inhabitant. Content, breeding, compatibility with other fish

Among aquarists, a fish called Akantoftalmus Kühl is quite popular. To some, she is known by the names of acantes, pangio, and even a traffic cop.

Fish is an interesting object to observe. By the way, all its behavioral features have not been solved so far, the more interesting it is to identify them.

In the wildlife, Akantoftalmus Kühl (photos are presented in the article) is quite widespread in the south and east of Asia. It is often found on the islands of Sumatra, Java and Borneo, mastered the reservoirs of Thailand and Singapore. Under natural conditions, the fish prefers mountain and forest rivers, characterized by a muddy bottom.

The open, steppe spaces of acantophthalmus are not interesting – it requires a thick layer of leafy litter.

Externally, it looks like a brightly colored worm. The body is elongated, spindle-like, slightly flattened on the sides, reaching a length of 10-12 centimeters. The main background color is light, along it are transverse thick stripes of different intensities of brown color.

Their number and density are individual for each individual. On the upper part of the body there is no scale at all, the lower part is covered with very small, almost indistinguishable by scales.

Tendrils grow near the mouth, three pieces at each corner. Under the eyes grow small spines (one per eye).

Akantoftalmus Kühl – bottom and night fish. She begins to show activity in the twilight. Fish stallions are not noticed, but if the aquarium contains one or two individuals, they are constantly hiding and going out of their shelters only deep at night.

Therefore, it is recommended to keep 4-5 individuals in the pond at home.

At akantoftalmusov the air bubble is closed in a bone shell. This “design” allows the fish to change the buoyancy and greatly affects their behavior.

If the atmospheric pressure drops sharply, Akantoftalmus Kühl becomes significantly more mobile, and the acceleration of movement can be very sharp. If you follow the behavior of the fish, you can fairly accurately predict the weather.

Akantoftalmusy very shy. In the room where there is an aquarium, it is undesirable to make noise or turn on too bright light.

Frightened, the fish quickly turn pale, tend to hide, often burrowing in the sand. And if acantophthalmos is in the upper layers of water, it can jump out of the aquarium.

If you liked Akantoftalmus Kül, the content of his particular troubles will not deliver: the fish is quite unpretentious. However, certain rules will have to be followed.

    1. Due to the fact that acantoftalmus belongs to the bottom fish, it is not the height of the aquarium that is important, but the area of the bottom. Even for one individual home pool should be taken with low walls, but 50 liters. For the average flock volume should not be less than 80 liters.
    2. In the water “house” necessarily located stones, snags and shards, in which its inhabitants will hide. It is also recommended to set up the aquarium rather tightly with plants that also serve as shelter. At the same time, all shelters should be wide enough so that the fish do not get stuck in them.
    3. The bottom is covered with fine sand of at least 3-4 cm. It should not contain coarse or sharp blotches, about which Akantoftalmus Kühle can get hurt.
    4. The water filter must be closed with a net so that the curious fish will not climb in there, as well as the top of the aquarium so that it does not jump out of it.
    5. The temperature is maintained in the range of 24-28 degrees Celsius, the acidity is not higher than 7.4 pH.
    6. Lighting mounted weak and diffused.

The water changes weekly to one third of the aquarium volume. If acanthophthalmos constantly keep close to the surface, perform an unscheduled cleaning and check the filter: the water may be dirty.

Akantoftalmus Kühl: compatibility with other aquarium dwellers

Some aquarists advise to keep “traffic cops” without outside neighbors. However, this is not a definitive recommendation. Akantoftalmus Kyula is a peaceful and livable fish.

Categorically it is not necessary to settle it unless with predators: either they will eat your population, or akantoftalmusy will hide forever. All types of haracin and labyrinth will be quite compatible with weeds. Rasbor, small cichlids, short-ticked teeth will fit into the neighbors.

It is not necessary to move the corridors with which Akantoftalmus Kühl will compete for cover.

In the food “traffic cops” are also picky. The staple maker and the bloodworm are included in the main ration, almost all dry and frozen food is suitable. Acantophthalmos are eaten from small snails, fry and caviar, so that during the reproduction of other fish, it is better to plant them in a separate reservoir.

The only condition observed when feeding – dropping food to the bottom.

Settling an aquarium is a demanding, painstaking task. It requires theoretical knowledge.

Fish may have full or relative compatibility and be completely incompatible.

Most likely, representatives of the same family, detachment, suborder, having the same size and conditions of detention can get along. Common sense will not allow the inhabitants of cooler waters to settle in tropical conditions.

Predatory large species can cause serious harm to miniature water inhabitants. But there are exceptions in any rule, which is confirmed by experienced aquarists. There are many cases where peace-loving fish friendly cohabited with fierce predators for a long time.

At the same time, baseless wars often arose between calm fish.

If you are still not sure that water inhabitants are compatible, you can always use special tables. They contain information that will dispel your doubts and prevent you from making irreparable mistakes.

Look at the aquarium with guppies, lyalius, neon and catfish.

Long-term, even centuries-old experience of studying the nature, characteristics of life activity of fish in captivity gave modern avkvariumistam information that will help determine the compatibility of fish. Using the verified data, you can without a doubt organize the accommodation of gupeshek with the following types:

They have relative compatibility with barbs, gourami, eels, labo. Most likely, pets will make friends if they spend together the time of growing up.

The aquarium in which the fish coexist with other equally beautiful creatures looks quite unusual. An example is shrimp.

They are unpretentious, peaceful, moreover they bring enormous benefits – they eat leftover food, helping to maintain cleanliness. There are many shrimp, differing in color: snowflake, glass, harlequin, cardinal, bee and others.

They will complement the colorful world created by small fish.

Like any hobby, aquarism is a field for experimentation. Neither the author of the encyclopedia, nor an experienced amateur can unequivocally answer whether guppies get along with other fishes.

Compatibility is a relative concept. After all, even a cute little fish can show its character and arrange a rebellion against the same peaceful peaceful neighbors.

Thus, to keep an aquarium filled with one species, or to combine with others is a deeply individual question.

Barbs growing in length of 10-12 cm are classified as large species. Among them: arulius, Everett, red-cheeked barb, African barbs. Compatibility in the general aquarium is possible with cichlids, freshwater sharks and catfish.

Medium and small barbs reach a length of 5-6 cm in the aquarium. These include Sumatran, five-lane, green, ruled, oligolepis barb.

They are united by a cheerful disposition and a high level of activity in the water, so they are recommended for breeding in glass tanks. Get on with other fish of similar size, but not with slow. Snooty character – fish with long and veiled fins pluck, depriving those of a beautiful appearance.

For them it is better to choose a spacious rectangular aquarium, where there will be enough space for swimming. Shelters are also important – stones, snags and plants, but in a certain amount – they are not needed much for schooling fish.

6-7 fish should be acquired immediately to avoid stress and conflict situations.

Look at the aquarium with Sumatran barbs in the company with scalar scalar and ordinary.

A signal of unfavorable conditions in an aquarium may indicate a strange position of the fish – when they do not lie at an angle of 45 degrees head down (as during rest), but at a greater angle.

Quickly swim in the pond, are constantly in motion, play among themselves, catch up with each other. They live not very peacefully, they will compete with even aggressive species of fish.

Therefore, it is necessary to carefully and carefully choose their neighbors.

Before allowing other fish to approach them, it is necessary to check their compatibility in the aquarium. As you know, these teasers are not averse to fighting or pinching their neighbors, it may be fun for them, but for others it is a big fright.

To resist the barbs, fish have to gather in large flocks, and the nature of these “competitors” must be strong, not fearful. Only under such conditions can provocations be avoided.

Often, barbs of different types are settled in one nursery, so as not to risk unsuccessful sharing.

If you want to pick up the fish on the similarity of color and temperament, avoid the neighborhood with slow-moving fish. For example, Sumatran barbs look good with clown fights – they have a similar scale color and similar habitat.

Proven compatibility between barbs and other species of fish with which they live peacefully, these are small fish:

Fishes of different types require a large space for keeping. When flocks of different species of fish are found in a small aquarium, territorial and personal conflicts begin.

Big mistake novice aquarists – sharing the barbs to the peaceful viviparous fish in a small tank.

Look at the Sumatran barbs along with the green labo.

Guppies do not belong to those types of fish that can be hooked to active fish. There were cases when the latter attacked guppies, even an increase in the number of males did not help.

We have to settle these species in separate nurseries, saving them life and health.

If you have a beautiful and spacious aquarium with gourami, and you decide to share a flock of barbs with them – be careful! The latter are avid hooligans who will literally “get” beautiful fish.

Gourami will calmly relate to such a neighborhood, but one cannot say so about barbs. Small species get along with gourami, but large ones can damage their fins, and even destroy. Again, in order to prevent conflicts, a flock of 6 or more individuals should be hooked up immediately, so that the barbs have a showdown of the relationships within the flock.

Gourami will only watch the fights and chases. Given this fact, gourami and barbusyat can be neighbors in the same territory.
