Cichlid Parrot (Cichlid Parrot) – content, breeding

Parrot (Cichlasoma sp.) – bright, elegant fish with unusual outlines of the body.

The maximum size is 20 cm, there are dwarf forms, the maximum length of which does not exceed 10 cm.

After numerous experiments in early 1990s, Taiwanese breeders succeeded in obtaining offspring from crossing Cichlasoma synspillum x Cichlasoma citrinellum * (female and male), which marked the beginning of an ever-increasing group of hybrids united by the commercial name Parrot. It is impossible to speak with accuracy about the origin of the species, since the method of obtaining these hybrids is kept secret by the creators and is a commercial secret, but most likely this hybrid is obtained by triple crossing of South American cichlids.

Mostly imported orange and yellow forms of parrots. You can often buy bright red, purple and crimson fish. This coloring is supported by specialized “colored” feeds containing large quantities of carotenoids that enhance the red color.

When feeding with normal feeds in fish, orange coloring is restored.

Green, blue and purple color of these fish is not durable.

Cichlid Parrot (Cichlid Parrot) – a very mobile fish with a playful and funny character, therefore it needs the free space it needs for swimming. It is necessary to keep a parrot in large aquariums with a capacity of at least 200 liters.

In addition, it is desirable to create a current with the help of a pump, since the ancestors of this species live under natural conditions in reservoirs with running water.

The most optimal water temperature for the content of a red parrot is 22-26˚ С with a hardness of 6.5-7.5 pH. The water in the aquarium must be saturated with oxygen, so aeration of the aquarium, which contains parrot fish, is mandatory.

In addition, it is necessary in the aquarium to replace weekly up to 50% of water.

It should also be taken into account that the parrot, especially if the aquarium is not large, can jump out of the aquarium, therefore it is better to close the aquarium from above.

The only drawback of this peace-loving fish is the great love for building nests; in order to reduce their desire, the temperature should not be raised above 25 degrees. The character of the parrot is quite calm and it easily gets along with many other species of fish, both peaceful and carnivorous.

However, it is worth noting that, despite the peaceful nature, these fish should not be kept in an aquarium with small fish as they can easily swallow a small individual by chance.

The best partners for parrot fish are South American cichlids, catfish, Aravan, and many other mobile small fish.

The parrot is not picky in food and with great pleasure eats both live and dry food. However, the favorite delicacy of parrot fish are floating pellets and bloodworms.

After some time, they recognize their owner and, when approaching, begin to spin at the front wall of the aquarium.

With proper care and maintenance Cichlid Parrot (Cichlid Parrot) up to 10 years can please their masters with affection and rather amusing behavior.
