Chocolate Ctenopoma: tips on keeping and breeding

Good afternoon, dear readers! Chocolate Ctenopoma is an interesting aquarium fish from the Anabasov family. The homeland of the aquatic habitat is the slowly flowing river Ubanga in Zaire.

The blog already has a fairly impressive amount of information on the labyrinth, with which you can read by clicking on the link in the top menu “All blog articles.”

The body of the ctenopoma is flattened laterally and elongated. Mouth slightly extended, eyes large.

According to the interesting structure of the oral apparatus of fish and distinguished. Gill covers on the ends have teeth.

The tail fin fan-shaped. The body is colored in red-brown shades, and, in addition, young individuals have a marble pattern.

The fins are brown with black edging. In males, anal and dorsal fin strongly pointed. In females, you can see a full abdomen and not so bright color.

The maximum length of the fish in aquarium conditions does not exceed 10 centimeters.

Ctenopoma chocolate is considered a peace-loving aquarium fish that can get along with other species of fish of the same size and habits. It is recommended to keep aquatic organisms in a long aquarium (from 80 centimeters). The light in aquas should be diffused, and for fish it is necessary to create conditions identical to natural ones.

That is, make sure that all kinds of shelters are in the reservoirs, snags, ceramic pots, floating plants (naiad, azolla, pistas, riccia), plants planted in the substrate (vallisneria, cryptocoryne griffith, rogule, elodea) and stone grottoes are present. Your inhabitants will feel good if:

  • water temperature will be 22-25 degrees;
  • hardness: 4-20 dH;
  • active reaction environment: 6.5-7.5 pH;
  • regular water changes and good filtration with aeration.

The ctenopoma breathes atmospheric air with the help of a special labyrinth organ. The same organ is present in alius, labiosis, macropod and gourami: pearl, marble, chocolate, moon. To prevent the fish from catching a cold, inhaling the air above the aquarium, it should be covered with a cover glass and a cover.

Ctenopoma keeps in the middle layer of the reservoir. When you catch fish in the net, look carefully, do not touch the gill covers and do not break the teeth.

You can feed the fish with any live and frozen food.

The sexually mature Ktenopoma chocolate becomes at the age of 1-1.5 years. Spawning is best done in a separate aquas-spawner, the length of which should be at least 60 centimeters. It should also be all kinds of shelters and dense thickets of aquarium plants.

An excellent stimulus for spawning is soft fresh water and elevated temperature of the environment by several degrees.

Spawning occurs mainly in the evening, near the ground. Very often, the number of eggs may exceed 1500 pieces, sometimes up to 2000. As soon as the spawning is over, the female with the male must be planted.

The incubation period of caviar takes a day. After another two or three days, the fry already swim and feed on their own.

I would like to note that the small things are afraid of light and strive to hide in the shade or to smoke in the plants. Feed the trifle need rotifers and nauplii small crustaceans.
