Among the aquarium plants, ground cover species are of particular interest, which make it possible to create attractive lawns and lawns at the bottom of the water world. One such plant is the cube chemiantus.

With it, an aquarist has the ability to create a real aquascape.

Most species of aquarium plants got into the artificially created man-made water world from the wild. Gradually, these plants were domesticated.

Aquarists have learned to grow and breed them, so today all members of the hemianthus callitrichoides cuba species that are found on the market are a cultural form. But in order to successfully grow this attractive ground cover, it is important to understand the conditions in which it grows at home and what climate it is used to.

Chemianthus of the cube from the Caribbean region, where the coastal stones are covered with a dense carpet. For the first time this plant was noticed by the founder of the company “Tropika” Holger Wiedelouf, who traveled in these places. In the 70s he brought grass to his homeland and started breeding it.

Attempts were successful, so soon this kind of hemianthus was already in full use by aquascapers to decorate its water bodies. Luckily, the plant was not too whimsical and with the right care willingly got accustomed in aquariums.

In nature, culture inhabits the rapid rivers with rapid flow, preferring places where the water level is not very deep. But it stands up quite persistently and flooding during the rainy season, when the water level rises to 1 m. In water bodies inhabited by the cube, the water is rather soft and warm, the acidity level can vary from 6 to 8 pH, the temperature – from 22 to 28 ° C.

Such a variation of the parameters determines the endurance of the plant in the aquarium, where the temperature values ​​can vary depending on the season, and the pH level is affected by the change of water or the force of aeration.

Cube Hemianthus – Aquarium Plant, which is easy to recognize thanks to a memorable appearance. Its size is very small, individual leaves can hardly be distinguished, since their size does not exceed 0.2 cm.

Stems are also not very long, but they can stretch upwards in low light conditions. The shape of the leaves is oval; only a few leaves form on one stem.

Chemianthus grows in a colony and, under good conditions, forms a beautiful lawn consisting of many intertwined plants.

The height of the rug can reach 10-12 cm, but in order to maintain it in a flat “lawn” state, the tops are cut at a height of about 5 cm. Hemianthus attracts lovers of aquarium design with its compact appearance and bright green foliage.

With good lighting and sufficient content of iron in the water its leaves have a bright emerald shade. This appearance allows us to successfully use weed to decorate the foreground of an artificial reservoir, forming with its help an entirely plausible imitation of a natural lawn growing in a surface environment.

Despite its modest size, the grass has a tenacious root that helps it to take root in stony ground and make its way to nutrients among the relatives located a few millimeters from each other. She prefers silted soil, but even with good nutrition in aquarium conditions, she has an average growth force.

According to the complexity of the content, this soil pack can be classified as medium-difficult. The advantages of planting plants:

  • the possibility of creating an underwater landscape in the style of aquascape;
  • high decoration;
  • the ability to root on horizontal and inclined surfaces.

And these are not all the advantages of growing ornamental grass. Those who manage to create suitable conditions will be presented with a green mat with an interesting spectacle – the blistering of plants.

Accumulating oxygen in the daytime, in the evening hemianthus begins to actively allocate it, forming an endless firework of air bubbles. Watching such a phenomenon is very exciting and no other plant will demonstrate it as vividly as hemianthus.

Chemianthus cube, the content of which in the aquarium requires the observance of certain conditions, is quite accessible for cultivation by amateurs who have experience in aquarium husbandry. Those who are not afraid of the need to supply carbon dioxide to the water reservoir may well take up the cultivation of the plant. Grass will have to provide the following conditions:

  • fine stony silted soil;
  • the preferred height of the water column is 30-50 cm;
  • illumination from 0.7 to 1 watt / liter;
  • filtration and aeration;
  • regular fertilization;
  • water change once a week (from 30 to 50% of the volume);
  • CO2 supply.

The last point is very important. In aquariums, unsecured by the supply of carbon dioxide, the plant survives extremely difficult, has a frail appearance and often breaks up into separate pieces, after which it disappears. Weed can react negatively to the lack of filtration.

For chemiantus, not only water purification is important, but also the presence of flow created by the filter. In tanks with stagnation of water, it is most likely that it will not be possible to achieve decorative effect from it.

Since hemianthus grows in fast-flowing rivers with flowing clear water, an aquarist should pay particular attention to the quality of the latter in his man-made body of water. Water must be clean, a large amount of dissolved organics in it is unacceptable.

This can lead to the formation of algae, and they are extremely destructive for soil packings. Even a small appearance of algal fouling can lead to the fact that the leaves of this dwarf plant will begin to break down.

To prevent the formation of algae, it is recommended to clean the water well and maintain a carbon dioxide content of about 10-30 mg / liter.

The content of ammonia (NO3) in water should not exceed 10 units. Water is preferable to slightly acidic, the value of kH (carbonate hardness) should not exceed 7. A high level of illumination helps to grow a beautiful dense mat consisting of bright green foliage.

The more light, the closer to the ground the plant will be pressed (which is usually achieved by an aquarist), but the lack of light will make it stretch and lose its decorative effect. A haircut will help to give the grass a neat lawn, but aquarists have conflicting opinions about it.

By analogy with the usual lawn, which is grown under the open sky, underwater “lawn” sometimes requires cutting and shaping. Most often, the plant is drawn when there is a lack of light. This deficiency can be fixed by a haircut, but the latter has its own unpleasant costs.

When the tops are removed, the stem of the plant, which has a low decorative effect, is laid bare. As a result, the rug becomes a little like a soft emerald glade, small bare stems protrude in all directions.

On the other hand, if the plant is not cut, then when the thickness of the carpet reaches more than 4-5 cm, the lower parts of the plant rot, and the whole cap floats to the surface.

Due to the small size, the planting of the chemiantus can be difficult, especially if it is intended to be planted in the ground of a large fraction. Small roots can be difficult to fix in the ground, because of which the plant emerges some time after planting.

To avoid this, tricks are resorted to: after planting, tufts of hemianthus are pressed to the surface with small stones or other objects. You can pin it with a wooden toothpick. After rooting the subject is removed.

Chemianthus Kuba can be planted both in small groups and as individual plants. For landing will need:

  • tool for creating landing holes;
  • tweezers;
  • small stones or wooden skewers for fixing landings.

It is interesting to plant and the fact that rooting it can not only on the surface of the soil, but also to braid them large stones. Rounded boulders are not suitable for this, but specimens with a rough surface, a lot of cracks and hollows – a great option.

The roots of the plant will penetrate into the existing grooves and root there, forming an analogue of the rock covered with green grass.
