Brocade catfish (Pterigoplicht): photo and content in the aquarium

Good afternoon, colleagues. Distract from the plants and switch to fish.

Today on the agenda we have brocade catfish or pterigopliht. For the first time about this fish learned back in 1854. A characteristic feature of this beautiful and large fish is the unrestrained eating of algae in large quantities.

Couples of adult pterigoplichtov will be quite enough to keep clean and tidy, even large aquariums.

Despite the impressive dimensions, the brocade catfish has a peace-loving disposition and can be kept with a huge number of fish species. They can show acts of aggression towards their relatives, but only if they grew apart. Pterigoplicht needs very large aquariums (from 400 liters for one pair of fish).

The aquarium should have snags, from which the fish will gnaw various fouling, which is the main diet of brocade catfish. In addition, they use cellulose, which is contained in snags, because it has a beneficial effect on their digestion.

Since pterigoplicht is a night fish, it is better to feed him at night, about 30-50 minutes before turning off the light in the aquarium.

I would like to draw your attention to this point. Despite the fact that the main diet of pterigoplicht is vegetable food, catfish is a scavenger.

In aquariums, they are not rare at night can eat the scales of the scalar and discus. Based on this, it is better not to keep these catfish with large and slow fish. Under natural conditions, fish can grow up to 45 centimeters in length, and in aquarium conditions, their size does not exceed, as a rule, 35 centimeters.

Be careful, because when you buy these fish, they can be small, but after a while your aquarium will be close for them.

Today, under the name brocade pterigoplicht, one can find more than 100 species of various catfish, which differ in color and unfortunately aquarium sources do not have their clear classification. The brocade catfish differs from its numerous relatives only by the number of rays of the dorsal fin: it has 10 of them, while its relatives have no more than 8.

The brocade catfish is considered an aquarium long-liver that grows in nature in some cases up to half a meter in length and the duration of its life with such dimensions may be about 20 years. In the conditions of an aquarium fish lives no more than 15 years.

The head of the catfish is large and has bone plates in the body. A distinctive feature of the brocade catfish is a long dorsal fin (up to 15 centimeters).

The fish bears some resemblance to a marine sailboat. Young pteriki have the same color as adults.

Keep the fish is not difficult, but provided that it has an abundance of algae or additional feeding. Gidrobiont is perfect for keeping novice aquarists, but do not forget what it can reach sizes, because it is often sold in pet stores as an aquarium cleaner.

The newcomer buys, and after a while the fish grows and the dwelling turns out to be too small.

You can often hear that the pterigoplich is suitable for aquariums that contain goldfish, but this is far from the case. The conditions of brocade catfish and scrofula are completely different and it is highly not recommended to contain them together.

The birthplace of this fish are the reservoirs of Brazil and Peru. In slowly flowing waters, fish can gather in large groups.

A brood catfish aquarium should have a powerful filtration, medium flow and intensive aeration. I advise you to get an external canister filter, as the fish is large and the water in the aquarium will quickly become dirty.

The optimum water temperature is considered 24 – 30 degrees with the active reaction of the environment 6.5 – 7.5 pH and average hardness. It is also advisable to make weekly changes ¼ of the water to fresh. Feed your pet a variety of plant foods.

The optimal proportion for feed: 20% of food of animal origin and 80% of vegetable. They can be given carrots, zucchini, cucumbers, spinach.

Today, there is a mass of high-quality special catfish feeds that are well balanced. If you combine these feed with vegetables, then the fish will receive an ideal and complete diet.

But from live feeds it is better to use ice cream, as pteriki will pick them up from the bottom after other fish fry. From live food, worms, bloodworms and shrimps are best.

Large fish in view of their impressive dimensions can pull out of the ground some plant species that are poorly rooted in the substrate. Also, they can eat lemongrass leaves or blue.

When feeding, make sure that the pterik gets enough food and remains full, since they can not keep up with more nimble aquarium dwellers because of their slowness.

Often brocade catfish fight among themselves, straightening the pectoral fins. This feature is peculiar not only to them, but also to other mail catfish.

When a fish straightens its pectoral fins, it becomes larger in size, which deters predators. In nature, brocade pterigoplicht lives in conditions of seasonal changes.

If the season is dry, the catfish can be buried in silt and fall asleep before the rainy season.

Since the fish is large, the neighbors must be appropriate: large species of cichlids (Tsikhlazoma Managua, Flower Horn), giant gourami, Senegalese polyterus. One of the obvious advantages of this fish is that its armored shell and size allow you to get along peacefully with fish that stupidly destroy other fish (for example, the Flower horn). But if you plan to contain pterikov in herbalists, it is better to abandon this venture before it is too late.

Imagine a 50-centimeter fish pulling out all the plants in its path with its roots. And what does not vomit, it will surely devour!

Pteriki grow rather slowly and can live up to 15 years in aquariums. Provide your pets with proper shelters in which they can hide during the daytime. If the brocade catfish chooses any shelter, he will jealously guard him from all violators of his borders.

Of course, injuries are rare, but frightening an annoying neighbor can already run.

In aquarium conditions it is impossible to breed these rhinos, only on specialized farms. This is due to the fact that the fish needs deep tunnels during spawning, which it digs in coastal mud.

At the end of spawning, the males remain to guard the fry in the tunnels. It is simply impossible to create such holes in aquariums, therefore it is the only way.

Hello, tell me please, I have an aqua 220 liters. 6 angelfish from 12 to 15 cm.

Equipment and all that is (3 years of experience). I took pterika about 6 cm, there were more, but I like to grow it myself from small fry in large ones) the question is: catfish is active, I was afraid that the angelfish would beat him but all the rules.

Before buying a specially cleaned only the windshield. But he only cleans the glass for the 4th day, but he does not touch tablets on the bloodworm, granules and special tablets for catfish. He also gave flakes but does not react at all.

The result of the work is visible on the glasses, there are areas where it can be seen that he fully computed. I apologize for the expression but pokes the norm, although the feces are 10 cm long. Is it normal that he does not eat any other food?

It happens that catfish food lies in the corner, (the scalar was not noticed), but it breaks past.

If the pterik does not touch the food that you give him, then it is enough for him that he peels off the glass of the aquarium. May eventually begin to pick up another food, while there is no sense in worrying.
