Botia dario (Botia dario) – description, content, breeding

Botia Dario (Botia dario) HAMILTON, 1822.

Botsiya Dario – a very bright and beautiful fish first came to Russia in 1990, but still a rare guest in amateur aquariums.

Botsiyu Dario is also called Botsia Geto, Bengal loach, Royal loach.

Habitat: inhabits the basins of the Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers flowing in northern India, is also found in Bhutan and Bangladesh.

Description: slightly elongated body has a shape resembling a torpedo with a triangular cross section in the section. The belly is flat, the snout is pointed with four pairs of antennae.

Under the eyes of the fish there are thorns, hidden by the sinuses and imperceptible, if the combat is at rest.

In stressful situations, the spikes are fixed horizontally, so the loaches should be transported carefully. When catching a net, they can catch the spikes on the net.

On the abdominal and pectoral fins there are special suckers with which the fish scrape algal fouling from the surfaces.

The main body color is golden yellow with cross stripes from dark blue-green to black. The number of lanes 7-9 may be different for fish caught in different places.

Dark spots on pectoral and caudal fins, same spots on abdominal and anal bases, but not so pronounced.

There are no females larger than the males, and there are no other noticeable sexual differences in the dario combat.

Under natural conditions, fish can grow up to 120 – 130 mm, in the aquarium their maximum size is 80 – 90 mm.

Arrangement and parameters of the aquarium: Darijo’s fights are schooling, forming in groups a social hierarchy and alone begin to show aggression or become withdrawn.

It is recommended to keep in the amount of 5-6 pieces in an aquarium from 100 liters, and better than 10 individuals in an aquarium with a minimum size of 120 * 45 cm. fractions.

Bengal Loach (Botia dario)
love vegetation thickets and muffled light, which helps to provide floating plants. Among the plants, Javanian moss (‘Java’ moss), Anubiasa (Anubias spp.), Thai fern (Microsorum pteropus) are also suitable.

They need shelters from grottoes, earthen pots, stones and snags. Keep in mind that they can climb into small crevices and cracks, so decorations with sharp edges should not be used when designing an aquarium.

You can put a few large smooth stones on the bottom. A lid is necessary, as the fishes are capable of jumping out of the water when frightened.

Water parameters: 23-27 ° C, dH 6-12, pH: 6.0 – 7.5.

Requires active aeration with filtration, intolerant to the accumulation of organic waste. Weekly changes of 30-50% water.

Fish very poorly tolerate pollution of the soil and water, provoking various infectious diseases in combat, which can often be cured only in the early stages.

For these reasons, they should not be planted in biologically immature aquariums, they most easily adapt to mature aquariums with sustainable bio-balance.

Compatible with other types of botsy, but the snails to Darijo is better not to move, they will all be eaten.

Nutrition: from live and frozen food, the Bengal loach takes a choke, pipemaker, bloodworm; from dry – flakes, tablets, granules, chips.

For nutrition, it is necessary to include in the diet of vegetable ingredients: pieces of cucumber and lettuce leaves.

Reproduction: unfortunately, cases of breeding Botici Dario (Botia dario) in the conditions of domestic aquariums are not recorded. In commercial enterprises, fish breed by means of hormonal injections.
