Black-striped tsikhlazoma: breeding, maintenance and care

Hello dear colleagues aquarists! We continue to study the Cichl family and today we have on our agenda Black-Striped Tsihlazoma!

This aquarium fish is considered to be one of the most popular tsikhlovyh, as they are unpretentious in content, have a pleasant appearance and have a calm disposition.

Some tsikhlidniki may argue that the time of these tsihlazom has long passed, but this is far from the case. Of course, nowadays, colorful Cichlians are most popular (ramiresi apistogram, cockatoo, meek cichlisome, etc.).

But the number of aquarists who ask search engines for information on the content of this fish is growing steadily. Well, in order to keep up with competitors, I also offer info on this fish for your reference.

As I mentioned above, the Black-Striped Cichlasome is considered an unpretentious cichlid, which can be safely advised to beginners. The temperature of the water in the aquarium should be in the range of 20-28 degrees, hardness from 8 to 30 dH, and acidity in the range of 7.0 – 8.0 pH. In the usual time the fish does not show aggression towards other neighbors, but there are, of course, exceptions to the rules.

The highest percentage of aggressive attacks occurs during spawning and caring for fry.

Black-striped tsichlazoma is compatible with various non-aggressive fish, despite the fact that it belongs to the tsikhlovyh family. It can even be lodged with small peaceful aquarium fish. As neighbors to this tsikhlazome can be addicted parrot, diamond tsikhlazomu, psevdotrofeusov demasoni and falcon, ternatsii, mollies, pearl gourami, barbs and swordtails.

In addition to these fish, the tsikhlasoma perfectly got along with the battle of clowns, labo, speckled catfish and tarakatums. But in the case of catfish there is a small nuance: the black-striped tsikhlazom spawns at the bottom of the jar, and soma can interfere with it.

Therefore, in the event of an undesirable guest entering the Cichl territory, fights may occur.

But with large and aggressive fish (piranhas, akaras and astronotus) tsikhlasoma does not get along. It is also not recommended to settle too small neighbors, such as: cherry barbs, red, blue and black neons, rasbor, guppies and various petilia (swordtails are an exception).

In aquarium conditions, the fish can live up to 15 years.

The minimum amount of water for a pair of black-striped tsihlazom should be at least 100 liters per pair of fish. But there were cases when aquarists successfully kept a pair in a 50-liter aquarium.

However, in such a jar the fish will not be comfortable and they will not be able to grow to the maximum size.

The main condition for the successful maintenance of tsikhlazomy in an aquarium – maintaining it clean and constant chemical parameters of water. For this reason, I advise beginner tsikhlidnik to begin the thorny way with this fish.

The only nuance that needs to be approached with the utmost seriousness is the choice of aquarium soil.

Since cichlids like to do redevelopment of the substrate at their discretion, it is better to use small and medium pebbles, granite chips and gravel as the soil. Small types of soil in the form of sand is not suitable, because in your tank there will be a constant fog of turbidity, raised from the bottom.

In view of the fact that tsikhlovye are territorial fish, in an aquarium it is necessary to produce zoning of the territory by decorations. For these purposes, large stones, snags, caves, ceramic pots and tubes, coconuts are perfect.

Also zoning of the aquarium can be done with the help of aquarium plants with powerful roots. For these purposes, echinodorus, cryptocorynes and Vallisneria are perfect.

But just planting the plant in the ground will be small, it is desirable to cover the roots with large stones or decorations, otherwise they will be torn out. Oh, and do not forget to put on the ground a large flat stone or pot, where the fish will spawn.

Do not forget about filtering and aeration of the aquarium, as well as every week to make water changes in the amount of 25-30% of the volume. The maximum length of the fish in aquarium conditions is 10 centimeters.

These fish feed on any feed, but it is better to give preference to live food (tubule, moth, artemia). Like other fish, tsikhlazomy need plant foods.

You can buy vegetable feed in the pet stores in your city, or start cultivating at home the usual duckweed. Also in the diet of pets, you must add scalded cabbage leaves, lettuce and oatmeal.

To prevent overeating, feed your fish in moderation and arrange fasting days once a week.

In order for your pets to be healthy and get all the necessary vitamins and trace elements with food, the food in fish must be varied and balanced. Use when feeding frozen, dry, live and vegetable food.

If you have the opportunity to buy high-quality fish food, I recommend that you use Tetra food. For a long time presence in the market of aquarium products, the products of this company does not need additional advertising.

Their feed quality is excellent.

Experienced aquarium tsikhlidniki argue that breeding a fish is not difficult, and this is true. The only thing that is required of you is diligence and a bit of experience.

As a rule, spawning in the general aquarium occurs without the participation of an aquarist, but in order to create comfortable conditions for the fish, you will have to lend a hand.

The fish reaches sexual maturity at the age of 7-10 months. This monogamous fish.

While still young, cychlasms form strong pairs. To create these same pairs, the fish must be kept in a small flock so that it would have the same number of males and females. Sexual dimorphism in black-striped tsihlazom well expressed: males are larger than females, with an age on their forehead, they have a growth.

In females, there is a full abdomen and the colors are brighter.

Spawning occurs all year round, but with small interruptions. This applies to both individual spawners and common aquariums.

To get a full-fledged offspring, it is still better to fish the fish in a separate container. Chemical parameters of aquarium water do not play a special role.

The stimulus to spawning is the increase in water temperature to 29 degrees and the substitution of water in the amount of ¼ to fresh.

The process of grooming a male for a female is quite long, and at the end of it, the female will lay her calf in the place she likes. This place can be a pot, a flat stone, a coconut shell or a big shell.

There are cases when the laying is made on a large sheet of aquarium plants. When laying in a shelter, parents can show aggression to all sorts of border violators (if spawning proceeded in the general aquarium).

Like other representatives of the Cichlidae, the Black-Striped Cichlasome jealously cares for its offspring, occasionally removing dead and unfertilized eggs from the nest.

As soon as the larvae hatch from the eggs, caring parents transfer them to another place. After 2-3 days, when the yolk sac disappears in the fry, they begin to move around the aquarium under the strict supervision of their parents.

For feeding the fry, the female will swing her fins and raise the dregs from the bottom. And by the end of the day all the offspring are going to their shelter.

Manufacturers from the aquarium, as a rule, are not removed. However, there are times when males become aggressive and can eat all fry.

To prevent this from happening, the males are deposited back into the general aquarium, and the female is left to care for the young. In aqua with fry, filtration and aeration should be installed, and also water should be changed a couple of times a week.

Starter feed for fry: chopped live and dry food.
