Black-striped Tsichlazoma (striped cichlid, zebra): compatibility with other fish, content, reproduction (breeding), fry, photo

Black-striped cichlid – a small cichlid, popular with aquarists. Also known as zebra cichlid or convict cichlid.

Habitat: small streams and deep rivers of South and Central America. Not found in open places, in its habitat a lot of shelters.

The modest size of the fish does not stop them from attacking larger fish. Cychlasma is suitable for beginners due to its strong immunity and easy breeding.

The body is oval with pointed fins, reaching 13–15 cm in length. The color is blue-gray with 8–9 black vertical stripes overlooking the fins.

Fins cichlids translucent, pointed. Zebra cichlasomes have large eyes and lips.

The territorial character makes it difficult to select neighbors. The male may show excessive aggression during spawning.

And also black-striped – good parents.

On average, tsikhlazomy live 8-10 years, in good conditions – 15 years.

Breeding spawned some black-subspecies. The differences between individuals can be traced in the comparative table of subspecies.

The albino form is a mutation product, the disco shape is the breeders’ activity. There are a lot of questions around the flamingo species: no one knows exactly how this species appeared. Often the description of the flamingo cichlasomes is accompanied by the statement that this is an albino form of black-strip.

Content requirements are slightly different in three different forms.

Fish unpretentious compared to other cichlids. Provide high-quality equipment and large-sized tanks

The minimum volume of an aquarium for a pair of individuals starts from 100 liters. For a small group of black stripes, a 300-liter capacity is required.

Zebra fish suitable water with the parameters:

  • acidity 6–8;
  • rigidity 2–20 dGh;
  • water temperature 24-28 degrees.
  • Flow of water create a moderate or weak. Replace a third weekly, keep the fluid clean.

    Periodically check the water for nitrates.

    Divide the reservoir into several zones by plants. Land the grass, overlaid with stones at the bottom so that the zebras do not dig it. Suitable plants with a strong root system:

  • Anubias;
  • Crinum;
  • cryptocoryne;
  • echinodorus;
  • vallisneria.
  • Cover the bottom with small pebbles or granite chips. The cichlids will move the substrate at their discretion.

    Do not place sand on the bottom, the water will become cloudy due to the constant digging of cichlids in the ground. For decoration use:

  • grottoes;
  • caves;
  • large stones;
  • snags;
  • rocks;
  • ceramic pots;
  • coconut shells.
  • A set of necessary equipment for black:

  • Filter. The external filter purifies water more qualitatively, however it is more expensive than the internal one.
  • Aerator Use an aquarium pump or compressor. It is better if different devices perform filtration with aeration.
  • Thermometer. The temperature in the cichlid must be carefully monitored. The internal glass thermometer shows data more precisely, than the thermometer sticker.
  • Heater. May be needed in the autumn-winter period.
  • Choosing a lamp, focus on the needs of plants. Plants need a red and blue light spectrum. Do not allow the predominance of yellow light, it provokes the development of algae.

    Sunlight is also harmful to the walls of the aquarium. Tsikhlazome comfortable in any light, if there is a shelter with shaded areas.

    Ensure that the lamp does not heat the water too much. Place the lights on the front and sides of the tank.

    Such an arrangement of lamps will emphasize the attractiveness of black-striped tsihlaz.

    Make a varied diet. Do not overdo dry food. The presence of frozen or live feeds is mandatory in the black-banded diet.

    Vegetative top dressings are necessary. Omnivorous Cichlasome feed on:

  • pipe worker;
  • bloodworm;
  • shrimp;
  • mussels;
  • dry food;
  • minced meat;
  • Artemia;
  • cabbage leaves and lettuce;
  • duckweed;
  • zucchini.
  • Black-striped are prone to overeating, so feed in small portions in the morning and evening. Food should be eaten in 3-5 minutes.

    Remove excess siphon or net.

    The black-striped tsikhlazomy complete incompatibility with other small fish and large predators. Bad neighbors for striped cichlids:

    It is best to keep black cichlids in a species aquarium. Compatible with cichlids from the same biotope and similar sizes, as well as calm, sluggish fish:

  • corridors;
  • antsistrusami;
  • parrot fish;
  • apistogramma.
  • Black-striped cichlids are easy to breed. Small fishes form steady pairs, tenderly guarding the offspring.

    Sexual dimorphism in black-striped tsihlaz clearly pronounced. There are several differences between a male and a female:

  • male reaches 15 cm, female – 10 cm;
  • the color of black-striped males is less bright than that of females;
  • males have a fat bump on their foreheads;
  • there are specks resembling eggs;
  • pointed fins.
  • Sexual maturity comes in 8-10 months. Cychlasms multiply year round in a common reservoir or spawning chamber. You can save offspring in the general aquarium by making a Plexiglas partition.

    A fenced area should occupy a third to a quarter of the space and separate the producers from their neighbors.

    Stimulate the spawning of black-strip by frequent water changes and a gradual increase in temperature to 28–29 degrees. If the zebras are ready to breed, they set up a place for laying.

    Cycloses are digging holes in the ground or using decorative elements to accommodate caviar. In clutch there are 300–400 eggs, which the female is fanning with fins, while the male fiercely protects.

    After 2-3 days, the fry appear, which soon begin to feed and swim independently.

    Fry keep flock next to their parents. At night, the female sends the young in the “nest” to sleep, where she covers them with her body.

    Do not separate the offspring and parents too early, it will lead to stress and aggression of the parents. Starter feed:

  • Cyclops;
  • Artemia nauplii;
  • daphnia;
  • sliced feed for adult fish;
  • brand food for fry.

    After three weeks, the fry grow up and absorb unground chopped black-striped cichlase food.

    Aquarists pay attention to the diverse nature and behavior of black-striped tsihlazami in different waters. It is noted that the color varies depending on the lighting and health of the fish.

    According to some articles, tsikhlazomy carry eggs in the mouth during spawning, however, aquarists did not notice this for their pets.

    Black-band tsilasomas cost differently depending on the size and place of purchase.

    Black-striped tsikhlazoma – aquarian inhabitant who remembers the breadwinner. Some aquarists tame tsikhlazomu so that the fish allows himself to be stroked and fed from the hand.

    Cichlid can also bite if she does not like something.
