Black neons (neon tetra fish): content, care, breeding, photo, life expectancy, aquarium, water parameters, compatibility, sex differences, reproduction

Small inhabitants of aquariums – black neons are widely loved by the owners because of the calm temperament and external beauty. They will be peaceful pets that do not require difficult care.

Black neon or neon tetra is a freshwater fish from the Kharacin family. Natural habitat – low-current rivers and lakes of Brazil.

They were discovered in 1963. For a long time they were difficult to breed in captivity, but now when they are created close to natural conditions, they multiply.

It helps to preserve fish populations in nature.

A medium-sized fish with a body length of not more than 6 cm with an extended head and tail. The color is not completely black – the main part of the body is colored beige-green. Black only strip in the middle of the sides, passing from the gills to the tail.

Above it is a thin white stripe. The fins are transparent, sometimes with a red or black tint.

They differ in color of the upper part of the eye – due to the large number of capillaries it is brightly highlighted in red.

The term of life is not more than 6 years.

Black neon requires maintenance only in a flock of its own kind; in solitude, representatives poorly survive and often die. A flock consists of at least 5 fish.

To maintain the purity of the water and the aquarium, every half month, ¼ of the volume of the tank is replaced.

Pet care is not difficult, but requires an aquarist to pay attention to the health of neon and its condition.

The volume of the aquarium from 70 liters, because the fish need room for swimming and activity. The tank must be equipped with a lid so that pets do not accidentally jump out.

Do not choose too high aquariums, it is better to increase them in length.

The fish are not too sensitive and fastidious to the readings of the environment, but for a comfortable existence, they create favorable temperature and chemical parameters:

  • Water temperature 21-25 degrees.
  • Water hardness is no more than 10 units.
  • Acidity 6.8 – 7.0 pH – neons love acidified water.

Black neon fish love to hide in the foliage of plants, so they are planted at the edges of the aquarium, so as not to interfere with swimming. Suitable vegetation are:

  • mosses (especially javanese);
  • echinodorus;
  • cryptocoryne;
  • alternanthera;
  • Anubias;
  • bacopa;
  • hygrophil;
  • duckweed;
  • vallisneria.

Inhabitants are not prone to deterioration of foliage or rhizomes.

Black neon tetras prefer a bright bottom, on which their color looks more advantageous. River sand and small pebbles are suitable as substrates.

Fish unpretentious, but for a comfortable stay, install the compressor and filter. They will maintain the amount of oxygen in the water is normal and get rid of excess pollution.

Diffused light is preferred, pets do not tolerate bright direct sunlight.

Omnivores, feed on live, frozen, dry feed, flakes, granules. Food particles must be smaller than the mouth of the fish, otherwise the fish will remain hungry.

The ideal rations will be a base of flakes and small additives in the form of bloodworms and artemia. Do not forget about vegetable food.

Black neon food should be completely eaten in 2 minutes, remove residues from the aquarium.

Cichlids (dwarf)Goldfish

For breeding, they form pairs that are capable of producing offspring all year round, but the spawning peak falls on favorable seasons – summer and spring. In nature, ponds at this time are filled with larvae, insects.

For breeding, select a bright and bright male and a large female. For them, prepare a spawning volume of 10 liters with a water temperature of 26 degrees.

Live or artificial plants are planted in it, more often mosses. Vegetation is necessary for attaching eggs.

The pair is actively fed protein food for a week, and one day before spawning they stop feeding. On the breeding day, the couple is relocated to the spawn and again given a portion of food.

Spawning usually begins at dusk.

When fights color becomes brighter and the black stripe moves to the tail fin.

First, the fish begin to swim together and study the partner, and after 2 days spawning occurs. The female throws 150 eggs. After spawning parents move back to the general aquarium, because they eat the offspring, confusing it with insect larvae.

Incubation period of eggs is 1 or 2 days.

After 4 days, the fry become active and explore the world. They are fed by infusoria, nauplii.

After 5 weeks, the fry are completely similar to adult representatives and transplanted into a common reservoir.

Aquarists speak positively about the black neon fish, they are pleased with the simplicity of the content and the appearance of the pets. But there are difficulties in reproduction, because if you do not comply with all the conditions, then there will be no offspring.
