Black Barbus – a great aquarium fish for beginners

Greetings to you, dear reader, on your aquarium blog. Black barb belongs to the carp.

You can meet this aquarium fish in the wild on Ceylon Island. In 1935, this fish first came to the territory of the European continent, and only 20 years later, it ended up in the USSR.

Enough active hydrobiont, with a cool color and simple content.

The body of the black barb is flattened at the sides and slightly elongated, there is some similarity in body shape to the Sumatran barb. Unlike their relatives in the carp family, this watchdog has no antennae.

It would be desirable to note a rather motley and interesting color of fry. From head to abdomen, the body is colored red, smoothly turning into an alternation of black and light stripes.

In almost all cases, the black barb is colored dark green in the back and yellowish gray on the sides. The tail and dorsal fins, like the back, are painted in dark colors.

This fish has a lot of variations of color shapes and shades that vary with age.

Adult barbus males are colored significantly darker than the growing young. As the fish grows older, black stripes running across the body either disappear altogether or become even darker. And the overall background can vary from black to ruby.

I have even met such specimens in which the red head and body are completely black.

Barbushi females on look so beautiful than the representatives of the stronger sex. Their color as they grow up and age of the fish almost never changes, in fact, they retain the color of the young. It should be noted that the colors of black barb will change not only because of the growing up and aging of the fish.

Very often, the appearance of the individual is strongly influenced by the appearance of the fish.

The maximum how much a black barb can blow is 6 centimeters in aquarium conditions. You will be able to distinguish the male from the female only when the fish lives for at least half a year, and this color will manifest. As I said a bit higher, the female is not so beautiful and bright, and the figure is not as successful as the man.

In the aquarium conditions, I have not met, and in principle I have not heard that the black barbus lived more than 3-4 years. Fully matured watchdogs become 11 months old.

For the successful maintenance of black watchdogs, an aquarium needs to select a minimum of 50 liters, in which the size should prevail over the width. I recommend densely planting the aquarium with aquarium plants, for example, cryptocorynes and anubias nana to the foreground, and to the rear vallisneria, elodeyu and rovolistnik.

In the middle I would put the nymph red, I think it would look very nice because of the contrast of colors. But do not forget to leave our pets enough room for the gleek, as they are active fish and they need to drive through the aquarium.

So the black barbus is a schooling and active fish, it is better to take them in the amount of 8-10 pieces, as in principle, and cherry barbs. Black watchdogs, like red-nosed tetras, prefer to hang around in the middle layer.

I heard such a thing from barbusyatniki that with this kind of barb aquarium it is better to set so that the rays of the morning sun would fall on it. Take into account – not the whole day will shine in the aquarium, but only in the morning.

Take care also to create a sufficient number of shaded areas, their fish are used as shelters.

When you draw up an aquarium with barbs, fill it with a better dark aquarium soil, as on such a background black barbs look more impressive and their color remains saturated. You can feed your pets safely with cyclops, artemia, bloodworms and daphnia.

I do not recommend to get involved in feeding and pour food for fish in kilograms to the aquarium – this type of barb is most inclined to not slim waist and death from this.

In addition, add to the diet more feed of plant origin, and it will sharpen your plants, as I did sumatrans with ambulia. From the grass, you can throw them scalded lettuce, dandelion, wolfia and other crap.

The optimal water temperature in aquarium barbies is 22-25 degrees. The composition of the water black barb has no special complaints, he just coughs from hard water.

Every week, replace 1/5 of the water in a fresh tank in an aquarium, do not forget about aeration of the aquarium and install a good filter.

That’s all, thank you for your attention!
