The big catfish the changeling belongs to the order of bahramchatousy catfishes. The main advantage of this fish is interestingly colored mustache on the upper jaw, which flutter in the form of flags during swimming.
Previously, these catfish were called Pimelodus membranaceus and Sinodontis Günther.
A hydrobiont has a high body with a sickle-shaped and notched tail, as well as an impressive fatty fin, which practically joins with the dorsal. On the dorsal fin there is a large powerful thorn and 7 soft rays.
On the gill covers there are fleshy skin growths of a triangular shape.
Hemisidonts are found in the basins of the Chad, Volta, Gambia, Nile, Niger and Senegal rivers. In standing water these fishes practically do not occur.
For the first time, fish came to domestic aquarists in 1990 to an aquarist, Sviryaev, who managed to get a seed from a catfish.
The standard color is bronze-brown with medium-grained relief and dark gray belly. Also in nature there is a rather rare color – slate-gray. The females of the catfish have a fuller body, the color is paler and they look more massive than cavaliers.
Puberty begins at the age of three. Despite the large size (25 – 30 centimeters), chemisidonts have a very peaceful character, which allows fish to get along with small tetras (neon, rhodostomusy) and rasborami without problems.
During feeding, flight and rest, catfish swim only up to the belly.
The optimal parameters for the maintenance of catfish are the following hydrochemical indicators of aquarium water:
- Active medium reaction in the range of 6.5 – 7.8 pH;
- Stiffness from 5 to 25 dGH;
- Aquarium volume from 250 liters;
- Water temperature 22 – 28 degrees;
- Good filtration and water flow are required conditions.
When making an aquarium for soms, it is advisable to use fancy snags, large hard-leaved aquarium plants planted in pots and large stones of interesting shapes.
In order to qualitatively prepare the producers for spawning, a good and balanced diet is necessary. Fish perfectly eat frozen and dry food.
However, during breeding periods, greater preference is given to red soft daphnia and moina. An additional stimulant to spawning is a jump in temperature, light, and frequent large water changes during the month.
To get offspring, you have to resort to using pituitary injections, obtained from a canal or an ordinary catfish. The full fecundity of the female of the big catfish changeling is 50 thousand eggs, which develop in the semi-darkness.
After 4 -5 days, the larvae are able to independently swim and feed on the nauplii of Artemia and live dust. In dirty water and drug overdose, fish develops massively dropsy, which can kill a whole litter.
In captivity, this fish can live up to 15 years. The closest relative is the catfish, which grows up to 30 centimeters in length.
