Bester fish farming

Sturgeon fish are recognized as the most valuable species found in Russian waters. The main habitats of such fish are the seas, but their catch increases due to breeding in fishing ponds.

The best option for breeding in ponds is fish Bester. This species is a hybrid, but since its launch it has won the hearts of numerous anglers.

Bester sturgeon fish is considered the best species for breeding in ponds.

The history of Bester breeding begins in 1952, when Professor Nikolyukin, together with his wife, decided to fertilize sturgeon beluga caviar with milt. After the Beluga Sterlet was crossed, no one expected it to become new direction in fishing, but a week later the fry appeared from the roe.

What period will pass before the maturation of the fish was unknown, because the sterlet matures at the age of 6−8 years, and the beluga – 5−6 years. But here, too, the scientist was presented with a surprise, since the males had already matured by 3 years.

With females, however, everything went much more difficult, since they froze in the second stage of maturation due to the fact that there was no accumulation of yolk that feeds on the embryo.

Bester was bred by crossing beluga and sterlet

The experiment was continued in 1963, when the hybrids were transported to a warmer climate. Over the summer, females reached puberty, and a year later, second-generation hybrids appeared.

The fish got its name from Professor Nikolyukin, he simply folded the first syllables of the fish sorts, but as a result the English word “best” came out, which translates as “the best”.

Bester is a hybrid, which by its appearance practically does not differ from other species of sturgeon, and along its body there are clearly delineated rows of bone scutes (5 in total).

A detailed study of the appearance of the hybrid can be clearly identified features of each of the “parents”:

  • there are 2 pairs of antennae placed under the snout, which is characteristic of the beluga; they may be flattened or slightly wavy with leaf appendages;
  • the mouth is presented in the form of an intermediate form, in beluga – semi-lunar, in sterlet – transverse;
  • Color can vary from sterling to beluga – from light brown to black.

There is a more pronounced contrast between the dark back and the pale belly than in other representatives of sturgeon.

Bester is a fish, the breeding of which has already gained an industrial scale, but not all anglers know that there are several varieties of bester. Among presently present species of Bester distinguish the following:

  1. Burtsevsky, a hybrid formed by the interbreeding of the female beluga and the male sterlet, was first bred in 1952. In appearance it looks more like a sterlet. Puberty in males occurs at the age of 4 years, and in females at the age of 8 years. It is widely used for the manufacture of black caviar.
  2. Aksaysky, a hybrid created by crossing a female sterlet and a male beluga, was first bred in 1958. Outwardly, more similar to sturgeon, but has a large size and weight. It is distinguished by early puberty, females reach maturity at three years, and males at the age of two years.
  3. Vnirovsky, a hybrid bred by crossing a male Bester and a female beluga, first appeared in 1958. It looks like a beluga, larger in size than the Burtsevsky and Aksai bester. Sexual maturity occurs at the age of 8 years in males and at age 14 in females. It is characterized by several times greater fertility than other types of bester.

For breeding this hybrid requires its enhanced feeding. Optimum temperatures for growing this species of fish are indicators from 20 to 25 degrees; therefore, it is preferable to breed these individuals in ponds in the southern regions of Russia.

In the case of commercial fish farming, the salinity of the water should be 10–12%, since in the brackish water the bester develops much better than in freshwater.

During the incubation of the eggs and during the growth period of the larvae, the salinity of the water should be reduced to 2–3%.

It is preferable to cultivate a Bester in polyculture with fish that feed on vegetation, for example, silver carp and grass carp, they do not compete for him in the diet. It is strictly forbidden to engage in breeding Bester with carp, since these species of fish seriously compete with each other.
