Beckford’s nannostomus (Nannostomus beckfordi) – content, breeding

Beckford’s nannostomus (Nannostomus beckfordi) – a representative of the lebiasin family.

Habitat: inhabits the Amazon River, Rio Negru, Paranu, flowing in South America (Gayne, Colombia, Guiana). Prefers to stay off the coast.

Description: elongated spindle-shaped body slightly flattened laterally. The back is reddish-brown, it is green, the sides are grayish-yellow, and the belly is white with a silvery shade.

The black broad band stretches from the snout to the base of the tail, where it ends in two bright scarlet spots. Along the strip, and from below and above, the fish shimmers red, gold and purple. The pectoral fins are colorless, the rest with a reddish tinge at the base of the males, and the females are pale orange or yellow.

The tips of the ventral fins are painted in a milky blue, and the rays of all the fins, except for the anal fins, are dark. The throat is silvery.

The mouth is very small and narrow. Adipose fin absent.

At night, the fish almost completely lose their color, become transparent, and 3 dark oval spots appear on the body: in the middle of the body, near the anal fin and at the root of the caudal fin. Have the ability to change color, depending on the conditions of detention and mood.

Males are slimmer, smaller and brighter than females, which are paler, but have a golden edging along the dark strip and a rounded abdomen.

Beckford’s nannostomus – female

Arrangement and parameters of the aquarium: the size of the aquarium is selected at the rate of 6-7 liters per individual. It is recommended to keep a flock of 10-15 fish.

Plants that can serve as shelter for fish are planted thickly around the perimeter. With the same purpose, snags and stones should be placed in the aquarium.

The foreground is left open for swimming. A layer of fallen leaves is added to the dark ground.

The lighting is scattered, it can be achieved with the help of several floating plants.

Water parameters: 23-26 C, pH 5.5-7, dH 3-15. It is recommended to add peat extract to water.

Filtration aeration is desirable, a quarter of water should be changed weekly.

Compatible with small and equally calm species, for example, catfish, small tetras. A single content or neighborhood with aggressive fish leads to the fact that the nanostomus begins to lead a closed and secretive way of life.

Nutrition: in nature, it feeds on zooplankton – the smallest invertebrates. In the aquarium they take nauplii of Artemia, fruit flies, daphnia, bloodworms, Grindal worm, tubule, bloodworms, Cyclops and coretica. Food, both dry and lively, should be well ground.

If before spawning feed Nannostomus Beckford (Nannostomus beckfordi) he does not have a desire to eat his own eggs. They prefer not to take food from the bottom.

Reproduction: spawning volume from 5 liters, if spawning is doubles. Fish can spawn in a group, in this case, 2-3 males are needed per female.

The bottom is covered with separator mesh. Small-leaved plants should occupy a third of the entire space. Javanese moss, cabomba, and perististis are best suited.

With the help of several floating plants, diffused muffled light is provided.

Water parameters in the spawning aquarium: level – 10 cm, 26-28 ° С, dH 2-8, pH 6–6.5, peat.

Easy aeration. To stimulate spawning, the temperature rises gradually.

Manufacturers are divided into a week, food in this period should be strengthened. The nanostomuses spawn at night, after which they settle. Productivity – 70-200 eggs.

The female spawn on plants, but within an hour it loses its stickiness and sinks to the bottom. During this period, spawning should be completely darkened.

Caviar is incubated for 1-2 days, and after 3-5 more fry swim. Begin feeding the young should be rotifers, ciliates and cyclops nauplii.

Sedentary fry of a nanostomus are covered with dark and whitish specks, their color resembles mold. In the middle of the body, the specks are more frequent and almost merge into a strip.

They become sexually mature at 8-10 months.

Lifespan Beckford’s nannostomus (Nannostomus beckfordi) in aquarium conditions 5-6 years
