Barbus Scarlet (Tikto, Odessa): content, breeding, compatibility, photos, size, description

Love barbs won among aquarists for their unpretentiousness and beauty. Especially among the Puntius genus, the scarlet barb stands out.

Barbus (Puntius) Scarlet – a representative of the carp family of the Barbus genus. It has other names – the barb aly Odessa or the bar tikto. The natural habitat of the species is the Republic of Myanmar, India, the Himalayas, their neighboring backwaters, lakes and small rivers.

Although the Puntius is not considered to be a bottom fish, it still spends much of the time in the process of digging the muddy bottom in search of food.

The body is elongated and flattened from the sides. The head is triangular and pointed towards the end.

The scales are large and easily visible, the scales are colored silver. The belly of fish is painted in light beige tones, the back is green-gray, and the color of the sides is gray-metallic.

On each side there are two black spots on each side – near the gills and at the caudal fin. A distinctive feature is a red-scarlet band running from the head to the tail.

On the fins are pronounced black elongated spots.

The size of the fish is small, under natural conditions 6–8 cm, and with involuntary breeding, the representatives grow much smaller — 3–5 cm.

In aquariums lives in the upper or middle layers of water. The character is peaceful, does not show special aggression towards other inhabitants.

He leads a very active and lively lifestyle, therefore he needs a large aquarium.

Barbus Odessa is a schooling fish, so their solitary content leads to poor health and diseases of fish. In nature, live in flocks of several tens to hundreds of fish.

In the aquarium add some 5–6 fish to the scarlet barb species.

In nature, the life span of 2–2.5 years, in an aquarium with favorable conditions and proper care, can live up to 5–5.5 years.

Red barbs are easy to maintain and do not have any specific content features. The main thing in the content of scarlet barbs – not contain a single, and the pack.

In other cases, the fish are not very sensitive to the errors of aquarists.

Scarlet barbs prefer clean water with a weak flow, which resembles natural. Every week, a substitution of a part of water for a new one.

To make pets feel normal, do not change the temperature of the water sharply and do not allow drafts.

It is not necessary to choose a large aquarium, because the Puntius feel comfortable even in a limited space. More important is not the volume of the aquarium, but its length.

It is worth choosing an aquarium with a length of at least 50 cm and a volume of about 80 liters for the flock.

Water temperature – 20-25 degrees. The stiffness index is 10–15 dGH, and the acidity level is 6.5–7.0 pH.

The vegetation in the aquarium fits any, but remember that the aquarium fish scarlet barb rummage through the bottom. In plants with a weak root system, the roots will suffer.

The best option would be to choose artificial plants, floating plants, or plants with a strong root system.

Aquarium Plants with Scarlet Puntiuses:

  • Azolla Caroline or water fern.
  • Humboldt swamp flower
  • Salvinia is floating.
  • Lemna small.
  • Pistia or water salad.
  • Riccia is floating.

For an aquarium with Odessa Puntius, a medium-sized or large-sized soil with no cracks, sharp parts, which the Puntius will injure, is suitable. Suitable coarse sand, pebbles or a special substrate of the soil mixture.

The aquarium is equipped with an aerating device and a filter. An aerator is needed to enrich the water with oxygen, which the fish need, and the filter will keep the water clean.

Lighting choose moderate, scarlet puntius do not like any bright light or dark spaces. Place the aquarium at the window, and for the evening, use the backlight.

Under natural conditions, the barb Odessa, feeds on insects and their larvae in the mud. When aquarium content unpretentious to food, eats everything. Puntiusam is suitable for any kind of food: frozen, dried or live.

But a certain percentage of the diet is vegetable food. If you feed the fish only protein food, it will lead to diseases.

Fish have a good appetite, it often leads to overeating. Barbs can swim and eat all day long, but it is better to know the measures in feeding the fish and feed the fish 2 times a day.

When choosing neighbors for Puntius, it is worth remembering that barbs are gregarious animals. The lack of a pack will cause stress and illness in the pet. Good compatibility with other varieties of barbs, for example, with a cherry or Sumatran barbus.

Compatible with peace-loving fish: Congo, tetra, danios, mollies.

Puntiuses of the neighborhood do not endure with predatory fish, for example, with Clarius or Mecherot.

And also it is not necessary to move fish with long and decorative fins. Their barbs love to vomit and bite.

In reproduction, scarlet Puntiuses are distinguished by simplicity and the absence of special conditions. For successful breeding, spawning is required – a small tank in which a pair of fish will live until spawning. It is preferable to plant some plants on the bottom and lay a net.

The net is useful for protecting the eggs – parents are able to eat eggs, and so they will fall through the cells and remain safe. The water level is not higher than 17 cm.

Remember that barbs’ eggs are sensitive to light, so choose weak lighting.

In Puntius sex differences are markedly marked. Males are a bit smaller than females, and their body is more elongated and slim.

Females are larger, have a rounded abdomen and less bright color.

The spawning process starts early in the morning. The female after grooming the male spawns, which the male fertilizes. After spawning, the parents are deposited in a common aquarium.

The larvae will hatch in a day, and after 3-4 days they will be ready to absorb food. Feed the fry with infusoria, crushed worm particles.

Barbus Scarlet has established himself among aquarists as an unpretentious pet, which is relatively easy to breed and grow. Aquarists say that the scarlet Puntius brings revival to any aquarium because of its mobility and curiosity.

The cost of one representative of the scarlet Puntius depends on its size and age.

Size, cmCost, rub
  • When buying fish, look at its external condition and mobility. Barbusy – tireless swimmers, so if the fish in the store is sluggish and inactive, then it is likely to be sick. But Puntius rarely get sick, because they have good immunity.
  • When choosing fish, pay attention to the scales. It has the appearance of a pronounced grid and gaps in it speak about problems in health.
  • The beauty of the fish is especially evident in the tank with dark soil and diffused light from the vegetation floating near the surface.
  • Do not overload the aquarium with decorations, it is better to leave more space for swimming.

The scarlet barb is an active kind of fish, which by its appearance accelerates boredom and brings constant little chaos. Their unpretentiousness and small size make them welcome pets for beginning breeders.
