Eight-bar / 8-bar glass barbus (Eirmotus octozona) SCHULTZ 1959
It was first described by Leonard Schulz in 1959. This fish with an expressive contrasting color is distinguished by its simplicity of maintenance and resistance to diseases.
Shallow lakes and forest streams in the western part of Borneo and in Thailand are natural habitats.
The elongated body is strongly compressed laterally, almost flat and tapering closer to the caudal fin. The line of the back is sharply arched.
The tail is two-bladed, the eyes are large.
The general body color is brownish or olive with contrasting transverse stripes / strokes in black. Thanks to these bands, the fish got its name. On each side, along the body, a darker brown band stretches, in some individuals instead of a strip there is a row of dark spots.
All fins are transparent, and the first ray of the spinal cord is black. Dark spots are also found in the base of the pectoral fins.
In the aquarium no more than 4-5 cm.
Eight-striped barbs should be kept only with a flock of at least 6 fish, preferably 8-10 individuals and more. Living alone fish is very shy, and frequent stress greatly reduces their lifespan.
For a flock of these barbs enough 70-liter capacity. It will feel great in the aquarium, including a soft substrate as a substrate, dim lighting, roots, branches and fallen leaves as a decor.
You can also add aquatic plants that can survive in conditions such as Microsorum, Taxiphyllum or Cryptocoryne.
Filtration should not be particularly strong, as this barb is mainly from stagnant bodies of water, aeration. It is useful to periodically add peat concentrate to the water, place oak leaves in the aquarium, which acidify the water.
Temperature: 22-26 ° C;
Stiffness: dH 2-12.
Sensitive to changes in the chemical composition of water. Never place them in a biologically immature aquarium and make small but regular water changes of approximately 1/10 of the total.
Eight-barred barbs are small and timid fish, so the neighbors for them should be chosen carefully. Well-suited calm and peaceful species: medium-sized carp such as rasborov or microassemblies, corridors, otsinklyusy, you can keep with freshwater shrimp.
In nature, a glass barbus feeds on phyto and zooplankton and small invertebrates. In the aquarium with pleasure takes dry food. To improve the color and well-being of fish, you need to diversify food, daily feed them with live and frozen food: Artemia, daphnia, Cyclops, pipemaker.
With good nutrition, males can appear in colors orange shades.
Males can be distinguished by a more graceful and slim body, some of them have unpaired fins painted in a light pink tint, females, especially in adulthood, are more rounded.
