The fish Barbus Denison has been known to aquarists for several decades, but has gained its popularity relatively recently. Now this barbus lives in aquariums in all countries.
Barbus Denison – freshwater fish from the carp species. The natural habitat is the rivers of India.
The name of the species was in honor of William Denison, the Indian governor. Due to the difficult breeding, large volumes of fish are caught in the wild; this led to a halving of the population.
The fish barbus Denisoni is distinguished by a long body with a pointed muzzle. The body color is silver-bronze and shiny, the upper part is painted in olive color.
On both sides there is a horizontal strip of black color, and above it a strip of red color, which ends in the middle of the calf. On the tail are black and yellow spots, and the dorsal fin is bordered with a red stripe.
The size of wild representatives is up to 15 cm, in captivity of fish less – 10–13 cm.
Denison fish is characterized as peace-loving and not prone to display aggression towards its own species. Aggressive only for small fish, so neighbors choose large or identical in size with Denison.
You can not keep alone, but only a flock of 7 fish. Without the flock, the fish becomes shy and constantly under stress.
In the natural environment, the life span is 5–8 years; in an aquarium, it is less than 3–5 years.
The genus Sahyadria is not one type of barb Denison. In 2000, another species was included in the genus – Puntius chalakkudiensis.
Previously, this species was not separated from the Denison and considered them as one species.
The barb Denisoni still has a variety bred in a selection method. It is distinguished by a richer golden tint of scales.
The content of the barb Denisoni is not suitable for novice aquarists. The fish does not tolerate violations of the conditions of detention, the water must be kept clean and often replaced to be free from contamination.
Denison are shy, so take care of shelters. For this are suitable dense plants, snags, caves or grottoes.
A weekly water change of 1/3 of the volume is required to maintain cleanliness in the aquarium.
Barbus Denison is kept in a flock of 6-10 fish and they need a large volume of about 200 liters in an aquarium. Aquarium is advisable to buy a rectangular shape and elongated in length, so that the barbs have a place for active swimming.
Be sure to equip the aquarium cover, frightened, Denison easily jump out of the water to great heights.
Denison maintain a large temperature difference from 15 to 27 degrees, but in order for the fish to feel comfortable, the temperature of the environment should be 22-24 degrees. The water is not too acidic, the barbs like neutral water with a pH of 6.7–7.5.
Water hardness is 10–11 dGH.
The vegetation in the aquarium serves as a place for shelter, therefore, required in the tank. Plant plants with thick and wide leaves.
Barbs often dig out the soil and harm the roots, so choose plants with a strong root system so that the wrecking of the fish does not cause the plants to die.
Plants suitable for an aquarium with barbs:
In addition to living plants, consider the option of artificial landing. They will save time on additional care for vegetation, and fish can hide in them in the same way.
Denison pisces soil is indifferent, so any substrate is suitable. Avoid chemical additives in the purchase of soil, and from natural choose only neutral in chemical composition. The danger of such natural soils is that they greatly increase the acidity of water, and this damages the health of fish.
Coarse sand of natural origin is ideal for barbus fish. Even at the bottom of the aquarium often choose crushed pebbles with smooth edges.
For barbs, the amount of oxygen in the water is important, so be sure to equip the aquarium with a compressor.
The purity that is vital for Denison, and the absence of chemical impurities will provide a filter. If possible, install a powerful filter so that jets of water simulate the movement of water in a river.
Light for barbs is not important and does not affect their lives. But in bright light, the fish looks more beautiful, fully showing its unusual coloring.
Barbus Denison is omnivorous, like all Carp. In nature, its diet consists of insect larvae, underwater plants, crustaceans and mollusks. Home eats live, dry and frozen food.
The amount of plant and animal food should be approximately equal.
- Greens (lettuce, dandelion).
- Vegetables (zucchini, cucumbers, carrots).
- Fruits (apples, pears).
A variety of foods maintains a bright body color and maintains the health of the barbs.

Breeding barbs in an aquarium is almost impossible and only 2 cases of similar breeding are registered. Fish are bred only in special nurseries with the help of hormonal preparations or are caught in their natural environment.
Sexual dimorphism is underdeveloped. Females are distinguished by a rounded abdomen, a modest color and a larger size.
In males, the body is elongated and the abdomen is slightly hollow, small in size and bright in body color.
After exiting the caviar, the fry are fed with infusoria. The ambient temperature is 25-26 degrees, and the water itself is maintained in perfect purity.
As the fry grow, they are seated in different tanks depending on the size.
To obtain offspring, the temperature of the water is raised to 26 degrees, and the acidity of the water is reduced to 5.6 pH. Reduce acidity is achieved by adding peat or oak bark to water. Javanese moss is planted in the tank, on which females lay their eggs.
Fishes ready for spawning are determined by the change in color – the body color acquires a bluish tint.
It is impossible to set a pair of fish out of the flock; Denisoni breed only when surrounded by their relatives. After spawning, adult fish are deposited.
Barbus do not possess strong immunity and are subject to many diseases.
- White skin
- Endo-and ectoparasites.
Aquarists who buy Denison fish speak positively about the species. Fish is striking in its beauty and active behavior.
The downside is only the rather high price of a fish, especially if you buy a pack at once.
