Barbus Denison: a small spark in the water world

A little more than 20 years have passed since merry “kids” with the name Barbus Denison appeared on the aquarium Olympus. Moving and light, cheerful and active – it’s about them.

For some reason, from the initial description (1865) until the moment of fame, more than 30 years passed, but quickly gained popularity was compensation.

Puntius denisonii, despite its small size, is always visible in the water house. Their flock quickly moves from one part of the aquarium to another, scattering small glitters like solar hares (photos and videos on the Internet are a clear confirmation of this).

The body is lanceolate, elongated, painted in silver color. On the back color has an olive tint.

Along the side surfaces, including the head, there is one dark stripe, which is highlighted in the first half of the body by a bright red (or orange).

The tail is bilobate, on it are clearly visible transverse black and yellow stripes. Red rays are also noticeable on the fin (especially the dorsal), although in general they are colorless.

This description is typical for both sexes, only in the abdomen the female is not so slim.

Externally, a carefree creature, fish is frightening and cautious. Even suspecting danger, the whole flock seeks to hide and wait out the danger in a secluded place.

If the aquarium is not closed from above, there are cases of jumping out (due to uncontrollable emotions and disorientation in space).

For the rapid nature of the barb received the name “red comet”. His movements are decisive and quick, and his character is curious and sociable.

The natural conditions of existence of Denison differ:

  • High mobility of water;
  • Its almost artesian purity;
  • Relatively low temperature;
  • High oxygen saturation;
  • The presence of free space, not limiting movement.

Puntius denisonii does not like stagnation: it must be constantly in a whirlpool. On the one hand, it is a pleasure to move, on the other hand, water is actively enriched with oxygen.

The aquarium should correspond to such views on life as much as possible: be elongated in length, have a volume of 200 liters, close, have equipment that supplies water with oxygen and starts its movement. The fish will appreciate the design of an artificial waterfall with the help of specialized pumps that can be bought at pet stores.

For the maintenance of the barb Denisoni as a soil, it is advisable to pick up river sand, small pebbles, granite chips. Color for the fish itself does not matter.

But for the visual effect of the dark fit more. The chemical composition of the soil should not vary in any direction – physiological neutral indicators.

Plants do not interfere. Elodée and Vallisneria, cryptocoryne and hornpole will do. For those who like perististist, also have the opportunity to plant it.

The barb may also be of interest to the root system of plants, therefore the plants must be firmly attached. You can plant greens in the ground, using the classic recommendations for their placement (on the perimeter or on the back and middle plans), but you can place it on the bottom in the original pots.

Some plants can pick up floating on the surface.

With pleasure, fish will hide among similarities of rocks and grottoes, in large shells and synthetic underwater decorations. The main thing is that their composition does not impair the quality of water.

Denisoni doesn’t like too warm water. However, the permissible range of its temperature is wide – 20-25 ° C.

The presence of salts that cause rigidity, does not frighten the baby. He will successfully live at a rate of 8 to 14 degrees.

Loyalty to the parameters of water does not exclude stringent requirements for its purity. Fish do not tolerate organic pollution and the presence of nitrates and nitrites.

In nature, the impeccability of the aquatic environment provides intensive mixing of the aqueous layers and its enrichment with oxygen. In an aquarium, this should be a powerful aeration and a weekly replacement of one-third of the water with fresh.

The description of the diet can be done in one word: omnivorous. Barbus Denison – aquarium fish that can be fed with any food intended for small fish. Daphnia, artemia, bloodworm, koretra, branded balanced feed, vegetable components (cucumber, lettuce, zucchini).

She feels crushed worms and dry food.

You can feed once a day, the remnants of uneaten food after 20 minutes should be collected net.

Due to the fact that Puntius denisonii has recently appeared in the aquarium world, its habits and lifestyle have not been studied enough. Perhaps therefore, breeding in an artificial reservoir is not described.

Reproduction occurs in specialized nurseries using a special method – hormonal stimulation.

The problem is the relocation of the female for spawning. At this point, she is under severe stress and can get sick.

Theoretical recommendations on breeding are as follows:

  1. As the age of puberty is reached (from 6 to 9 months), the selected couple is deposited from the general aquarium, and in different containers;
  2. Individual feeding is organized: for the female – by vegetable food, for the male – with a high protein content;
  3. In parallel, prepare spawning (aquarium volume of 20 liters). At the bottom do not place the soil, and lay a separator mesh, designed to receive caviar. Water level can be made within 20 cm;
  4. A month later, in the evening, the producers are transferred to the spawning track and begin to observe. If the “pair” took place, the male will actively chase the female, stimulating spawning. If not, or if the opposite effect is observed (she attacks him), then something went wrong. In this case, it is worth starting anew, selecting other manufacturers;
  5. Feed the “held a couple” is not necessary. In the morning, the breeding process should begin: the female lays up to 500 eggs. At the end of spawning, it must be transplanted into a common aquarium;
  6. After 12 hours, it will be seen which eggs are fertilized and which are not. The dead need to be removed;
  7. From this point on, it is necessary to strictly monitor the parameters of water and ensure constant lighting.

The fry appearing in a few days need food with small meals. You can use a special liquid feed.

A month later, with good care, the external differences of fry from adults will disappear altogether.

Breeding barb Denisoni – a topic for further study, because the fish is in demand.

The issue of Denison compatibility arises from their biological characteristics. Given the fact that the fish are peaceful and active, neighbors should not choose aggressive large individuals who can, if not eat it, then scare.

In this case, the life of the barbs will flow in a permanent shelter, from which even during the feeding period it will be difficult to entice them.

Such an approach as the settling of fish along the layers of water remains: Denisoni scurrying in the middle layers during daylight hours may not even see catfish. Therefore, this is a suitable neighborhood.

There will be no conflict with diamond tetra and terntion. But the “hanging” scalar will not fit into such a group: individuals completely different in temperament and will only interfere with each other.
