Barber Schubert: content, reproduction (breeding), feeding, photo, care, disease, compatibility, spawning

Barbus Schubert (P. semifasciolatus var. ‘Schuberti’) is a freshwater aquarium fish of the genus Puntius of the Karpov family (Cyprin

Green Puntius (Barbus) lives in standing and flowing fresh water bodies of Southeast Asia. In European aquariums appeared in the early 30s of the XX century.

In the USSR, introduced in 1959.

Fish Schubert bright exterior fascinated lovers and ousted green barbs from aquariums.

The body is elliptical, compressed at the sides, grows up to 5–7 cm. The color is golden yellow with dark spots turning into stripes. The dorsal, ventral and anal fins are triangular, the caudal bifurcated. The fins are transparent with a yellow or bright red tint.

The mouth is small, forward.

Barbus is a schooling fish. In the pack actively moving in search of food. With a stable psyche, not shy.

She is able to stand up for herself, curious, playful. Prefers the lower and middle layers of water.

Eats small shrimp and crabs. With a lack of plant food, pinching plants.

With a lack of relatives is in a state of stress. Little moves, seeking shelter at the bottom.

Live up to 4 years.

Contained in flocks of 6 fish. The number of females must exceed the number of males.

Air filtration and ventilation are required.

Do not block the center of the aquarium. Need barbs for swimming.

Scenery and plants are located on the sides and in the rear.

Equip shelters: with all the love of peace, conflicts in the flock are inevitable. They will suit and additionally decorate the interior of snags, grottoes, green thickets.

Keep the bottom clean. The uneaten food, excrement of inhabitants spoil water and provoke growth of parasitic algae.

Schubert barbusses are mobile. In a species aquarium, calculate the volume of 12-15 liters per individual.

The length of the vessel – from 0.6 meters. Fish prefer shallow water, so the depth can be neglected.

  • Water temperature: 20–25 ° C.
  • Stiffness: 1–12 ° W.
  • Acidity: pH 6–8.

A weekly replacement of 20% of the water is required.

Schubert’s barbs look good with average lighting, which is not acceptable for all plants. Shadow-tolerant species are recommended.

  • Cryptocoryne.
  • Atonogetony.
  • Anubiasas.
  • Java moss
  • Ferns
  • Bucephalandras
  • Krinumy.

The alternative is uneven lighting. Reinforced for plants and average in the center of the vessel.

It does not matter, but Schubert barbs are spectacular against a dark background. Restriction: sharp fragments are not allowed. Fish skin is easily scratched, increases the likelihood of fungal and parasitic diseases.

A dark sandy substrate or basalt pebbles will do. Focus on plants and other inhabitants.

  • Compressor and sprayer. Compressor capacity: 1 liter of air per hour per 1 liter of vessel.
  • External or internal filter. Outdoor (canister) is used if the volume of the aquarium exceeds 150 liters. Capacity: 6–8 volumes of aquarium per hour.
  • Heater with thermostat, thermometer. Heater power: 1 W per 1 liter of water.
  • Siphon for cleaning the bottom and water change.
  • Scraper for cleaning algae glass.
  • Net with a frame of 4 “.
  • Snags, preferably with negative buoyancy.
  • Grottoes fit from any material. Barbus tolerate hard water.

Standard lighting – luminous flux of 40–60 lumens per 1 liter of water. If not enough for plants, bright lights focus on the green, and the standard light direct to the center of the can.

Use energy-saving fluorescent and LED lamps with a color temperature of 7000 K. Do not heat, do not heat the water.

Fish is omnivorous. Feed Barber Schubert with live food. Corer is preferred: prone to obesity.

Less often, give high-calorie food – bloodworm, tubule.

Do not give live food, whose origin is unknown. There is a possibility of infection with parasites, pathogenic bacteria and poisoning.

Advantage: does not spoil the water.

Frozen food is safer, but it is impossible to control storage conditions. Frozen repeatedly is dangerous.

Use dry feed if there are no others. Advantage: suitable for automatic feeders with a timer in case of departure.

Provide in the diet 20-25% of vegetable feed. Crushed oats (flakes), blanched vegetables: cucumber, zucchini, cabbage, spinach.

Feed once a day. Required weekly fasting day.

Females are the first, males – what remains.

Get along with all non-aggressive types of fish. Not able to resist large predators.

Peaceful neighborhood is impossible with the “whiskered” and veiltails: guppies, angelfish, gourami, goldfish. They tear off mustaches and pluck fins not because they are bloodthirsty, but because they play.

For the same reason, large shrimp and crayfish are affected. Small become prey.

Plants suffer the same damage.

It is not recommended to contain green puntuses due to cross insemination of eggs.

Barbs Schubert breed in the general aquarium, if the water is soft enough. The problem is the preservation of offspring.

  • Chance eating caviar is great.
  • Hatching fry do not immediately begin to move and hide from adults.
  • It is difficult to feed small food.
  • For breeding, spawning from 20 liters with a water thickness of up to 15 cm is preferred. Lay the soil on the bottom and place live plants. Pour water from the general aquarium.

Provide weak aeration with small bubbles. Filtration excluded: suck up caviar and fixed fry.

Experts do not recommend using a separator net.

Females are larger than males: their bodies differ in length by 7–10 mm. The color of males is more contrast, the body is slender, dark spots usually form a line.

The females have a rounded belly.

Selected female to spawn in spawning. 2-3 days feed the female with live food.

Plant a male. A day later simulate the conditions of the rainy season.

Substitute 1/3 of the water, heat it to 2–3 ° C and run a substantial amount of infusoria. The crustaceans eat the bacteria, serve as food for the fry in the future.

At the beginning of spawning point bright red fins.

Spawning begins “at night” when the backlight is off. In a label usually 250–300 eggs.

Upon completion of the adult individuals send to the general vessel.

Fry hatch on the third day. On the fourth – they move independently and look for food.

The conditions of detention are the same as for adult barbs Schubert. Starter feed – ciliates, nauplia and later artemia.

Bought in the store or divorced at home.

Feed boiled egg yolk (passed through a net) and dry food for fry. Need a vegetable diet.

Expose the jar of water to the sunlight in a warm place. When flowering, add fry.

After a month, fry add chopped live or frozen food. At 2 months, they eat a single small pipe sweeper, bloodworm.

Puberty Barbs Schubert reaches 9–12 months of age.

Characteristic of the barbs Schubert diseases have been identified. If the fish are sticking to the surface, choking, red-brown spots have appeared, suppose ammonia (NH3) poisoning.

Do a water test. Pay particular attention to the ammonia / ammonium test (NH4 +).

If the test is complex, the ammonia content in mg / l is determined according to the table of percentages in the test (fresh water).

  • Yellow, up to 0.02 mg / l. NH3 is present.
  • Pink, up to 0.1 mg / l. Poisoning is manifested.
  • Red, more than 0.1 mg / l. Poisoning is critical.
  • At pH 7.6 and a temperature of 24 ° C, the test showed 3 mg / l (ppm). Ammonia content will be:

    3 x 0.021 (% is indicated in the table) = 0.063 mg / l of ammonia.

If the results of a water test are within the normal range, look for an infection.

Considering ammonium ions to be harmless is a dangerous delusion. Although not threatened with acute poisoning, they cause gill necrosis in alkaline conditions.

With the subsequent infection with infectious and parasitic diseases.

Rubella carp: initial symptoms resemble ammonia poisoning. In acute form, peptic ulcer disease, protrusion of scales, changes in the shape of the body. The severity of the disease is exacerbated by the identification of the form: bacterial, viral, or both.

Consultation with an ichthyopathologist is recommended.

White skin is characterized by the appearance of white bloom in the tail area. The fish keeps on the surface, inactive.

The disease is infectious, in the absence of treatment is fatal. Sick fish are deposited for 5 days in a separate vessel with the addition of 150 mg of chloramphenicol (40 mg of erythromycin) per 1 liter of water.

After treatment, aquarium disinfection is mandatory.

Disinfection of an aquarium consists in filling a potassium permanganate solution (potassium permanganate) with an intensely pink color for a day. After rinse the vessel without the use of chemicals (permissible baking soda).

The soil is boiled, the plants are destroyed.

Barbus Schubert is valued for exterior and peaceful disposition. The fish is curious, watching the situation outside the aquarium.

Note the tendency to damage plants.

3-5 cm long (about 3 months):

Unpretentious, uncomplicated in the content of the barber Schubert came to taste aquarists. Bribe bright coloring and ease of breeding. Noted aggressiveness due to incorrect selection of neighbors.

The playful character leading to the spoilage of plants is compensated by fascinating behavior.
