Aulonocara multicolor content and fish compatibility

Cichlids are aquarium fishes that are very demanding to care, and the aulonocara multicolor is no exception. Not all aquarists are willing to keep such a predator in a home aquarium.

Representatives of the Tsikhlov family are very diverse in their color and have rather large sizes, which is the main advantage for their choice as an aquarium fish.

Aulonokara Multicolor – a fish of the cichlid family, very demanding in the content

Aulonokara multicolor (Aulonocara multicolor) refers to the genus cancer, who live only in African waters. But this type of cichlid is the result of breeding and is not found in nature.

The color of the fish is variegated: there are blue-blue spots on the yellow-orange body. Males, like all representatives of the akarovs, are much brighter than their partners.

Females have a body with a grayish tint, which makes it difficult for beginning aquarists to be able to distinguish them from other representatives of the Tsikhlovs.

Aquarium fish multicolor can reach a length of up to 15 cm, but its size depends on the conditions of detention. Cichlids have an oval body, flattened from the sides, there is a large pointed fin on the back.

If all necessary conditions for aulonocaras are created, she can live in a home aquarium up to 8 years.

Aulonokara Multicolor is a cichlid that is very demanding on its content. It requires not only constantly clean water, but also a spacious aquarium.

Unlike other types of African crayfish, individuals of this species are recommended to keep in the aquarium in the amount of not less than 6−10 fish. At the same time in such a group of females should be more than males.

Accordingly, you will need an aquarium that will have a volume of at least 200 liters. If the aquarist plans to contain only one aulonokaru, then the capacity should be 80 liters.

If there are other types of fish and cichlid groups of 6 pieces, you need to take care of the presence of a tank of 300 liters.

If 12 cichlids are planned in an aquarium, then its volume should be at least 300 liters.

For the successful maintenance of aulonocary multicolor at home You will need to create the following conditions in your tank:

  1. Clean and fresh water. You should get a good filter, and if the capacity is large, the compressor will be useful. You also need to replace the water at least a quarter of the volume of the aquarium once a week.
  2. Temperature. Since cichlids are tropical fish, the water for them must be warm and have a temperature of 24–27 degrees. A change of a few degrees is acceptable, but when breeding fish, this indicator should be constant.
  3. Lighting. Direct sunlight on the aquarium is strictly contraindicated. Lighting should be diffused. To do this, you can purchase special lamps at the pet store.
  4. Hardness of water. The value can range from 8 to 16 units.

It is necessary to carry out the replacement of water at least a quarter of the volume of the aquarium once a week

  • Acidity. The pH should be neutral or slightly alkaline and be 7−8 units.
  • Priming. As a substrate, fine pebbles or coarse sand will do. Its thickness should be at least 5 cm. You can also use coral chips.
  • Aquatic plants. Their presence in an aulonocaras tank is optional. But if an aquarist wants to have algae, you need to take into account the fact that there should be a moderate amount. It must be remembered that cichlids prefer open space. A great solution would be to purchase anubias, echinodorus or nymphs.
  • Scenery. The presence of any shelters in an aquarium with cichlids is welcome. But they should also not be too much. If breeding aulonocara multicolor is planned, care should be taken to ensure that the substrate is free from scenery.

    Food for this type of fish can be varied. It is important that there is an alternation of dry and live food.

    Aulonokaru multicolor can be fed:

    • special flakes or granules;
    • fresh or frozen artemia;
    • Cyclops;
    • coretica;
    • motyl in small quantities.

    It is important to alternate between dry and live food in feeding aulonocara.

    In order for the body of the fish to have more red shades, you can give food that contain in its composition a large number of carotenoids:

    You can also cook your own food. To do this, you will need raw squid meat (you can add mussels and shrimp), which you need to grind, nettle leaves and lettuce, spinach, saffron (they will need to be scalded).

    To the resulting mixture, you need to add the petals of the pharmacy calendula, pumpkin or zucchini.

    It is important not to overfeed the fish, so it is recommended to give food no more than twice a day. Also for aulonokary it is necessary to alternate feed.

    When keeping different species of fish in the same aquarium, it is necessary to take into account not only the character, but also the conditions of their keeping and the food used. For example, the coexistence of multicolor and pseudotrophy is undesirable. Although both fish are peaceful, however their diet is different.

    So, when eating pseudo-trophy meat (and it feeds exclusively on plant food), the fish can get indigestion. That is why the compatibility of aulonocara multicolor and pseudotrophy is very low.

    Akara is a peaceful fish, therefore, content with aggressive cichlid representatives is not the best option.

    The most suitable neighbors should be peaceful and of the same size as Aulonocara multicolor. Experienced aquarists recommend choosing a labidochromis ellou, a copadichromis “Kadango”, a blue aka or a blue dolphin as cohabitants.

    Aquarium fishes are absolutely not compatible with Haplochromis and Cornflower and aggressive species of cichlids.

    It is possible to breed an aulonokaru both in the general aquarium and in a separate “breeding ground”. For this it is necessary that several males accounted for one male.

    It follows that there were as many shelters in the aquarium. The fact is that during spawning the males are very actively caring for their partners, therefore, if the female is not ready for fertilization, she needs to hide somewhere.

    Nevertheless, we should not forget that in the aquarium there should be an open place with a substrate, where the multicolor can prepare the nest in the form of a fossa. A flat stone is suitable as a nest.

    When the female responds to the male’s courtship, she lays the eggs in the nest, which the male fertilizes. After that, the partner swallows fertilized eggs in the mouth, where she keeps them for 3 weeks.

    This is a protective mechanism against the offspring of other fish.

    During such a period it is recommended to raise the water temperature to 30 degrees.

    It is possible to breed an aulonokaru both in the general aquarium and in a separate “breeding ground”

    When the fry hatch, they should be caught and placed in a separate aquarium, if they were previously in a common tank with older individuals. You can feed them with different food: both dry and live.

    Dry food should be bought specifically for fry.

    Fish grow quite quickly, therefore, they become sexually mature by the age of 10–12 months. At this age, they should be about 8 cm long.

    Juveniles have a nondescript color, and they acquire color only 1–2 months after their birth.

    Aulonokara multicolor is a very unusual fish of the Tsikhlov family. Unlike its cichlid relatives, this fish is peaceful, but still quite demanding of its conditions.

    Therefore, not every novice aquarist can venture to get such beauty in a home aquarium.
