Aquarium fish Tarakatum: photos, content and feeding, reproduction and breeding

Size up to 16 cm. Tarakatum lives in the Amazon River basin and in the waters of Guiana. The male differs from the female by the first ray of the pectoral fin in the form of a reddish solid bone spike.

Tarakatum, despite its size, peace-loving, loves twilight, shelter, leads a bottom life. In search of food, sediment often sediments. Eats any live and dry food, finely chopped meat.

Water for GH content up to 20 °; pH 6.5-7.5; t 20-28 ° C. Spawns in the general aquarium and in a separate spawner 40 l or more.

To stimulate spawning, regular water changes and a temperature rise of 2-3 ° C are necessary. Like most catfish, it reacts to a decrease in atmospheric pressure, therefore, it is advisable to conduct stimulation at the time of pressure reduction. A necessary condition for spawning is the imitation of a floating sheet, for which a piece of foam with a size of 15×7 and a thickness of 1-2 cm is usually used, fixing it with a sucker in the shaded corner of the aquarium on the water surface.

Breeding water: GH up to 8 °; pH 6.5-7.0; t 25-27 ° C. Carbonate stiffness is minimal. In one aquarium, if it is of sufficient size, you can spawn several pairs or one male with several females.

To prevent fights between males because of the sheets, they must be set to 1-2 pieces more than the number of males. The male cleans the sheet and builds a nest of foam under it.

Tarakatum female spawns up to 1000 eggs for spawning and glues eggs with a uniform layer over the leaf. After spawning, a sheet of caviar can be transferred to a separate aquarium (a precipitator) with water of the same composition, by installing a sprayer next to the sheet.

Also, the sheet can be left in the care of the male, having landed the female, which, after spawning, the male begins to drive away from the nest. Tarakatum does not eat caviar and fry. After 3-5 days, the larva emerges from the calf, which after 2 days turns into fry.

Starter feed – Artemia, small shredded tubule Fry grow quickly, but are afraid of souring water. Tarakatum is best kept in dimly lit aquariums.

Photos of Tarakatum can be seen on the right.

You can buy Tarakatum in a specialized nursery. The price of Tarakatum’s fry can be found on the bulletin board.
