Aquarium fish Molliesia veifera: photos, content and feeding, reproduction and breeding

Velifer molliesia (Poecilia velifera) – This is a species of fish, whose habitats are the waters of Mexico, Florida, Virginia and Texas. This species is characterized by the fact that females significantly exceed males in size.

The females of Velifer can grow up to 18 centimeters. The sex characteristics of the representatives of this genus are well pronounced – the anal fin in males is pointed and forms gonopodia, while for females the rounded fin is characteristic.

The dorsal fin has a trapezoidal shape with slightly rounded upper edges.

There are several varieties of color mollies or as aquarists called it “molly”. The general background is silver-yellow, with symmetrical lines and shining dots of blue, greenish, red and gold scattered along it.

Sail-fin on the back is also framed by color points, and on the caudal fin you can see blue specks. In females, the coloring is somewhat paler.

The first representatives of the mollies family were brought to Russia in 1913. In the prewar period in aquariums, they were rare guests. After the war, they were delivered again, but not from nature, but from European aquariums.

Now mollies are a real decoration of any collection of aquarists. Relatively recently, breeders have developed a fork species of fish – with a carved tail fin and long lower and upper rays, as well as a scarf subspecies, which is characterized by a long dorsal fin.

Care of sailing mollies

Mollies are considered capricious fish, because of their content are associated with certain difficulties. Novice aquarists do not always take up the breeding of this fish, although the matter is most likely not in the needs of the molly, but in the absence of sufficient information regarding its content.

The aquarium should be large, these fish love space. Be sure to ensure the availability of filters and aeration. The water temperature should be constant – 24-27 degrees, its sharp decrease can lead to fish disease.

If the fish are sick, the temperature is raised to 32 degrees.

For adults, the aquarium volume rate is 1 liter of water per 1 cm body length. It is desirable that in the aquarium in addition to plants there are snags, slides of stones for shelters.

Most of the day mollies spend in the upper layers of the water, daylight should last at least 12 hours, so take care of good lighting. It is advisable that at least 2 hours a day the sun’s rays reach the aquarium. For Velfer, you need to carefully select food, you need to remember that this fish is herbivorous, so you need to add lettuce, cabbage leaves, scalded with boiling water, various algae and cereals to the diet.

Representatives of this genus live up to 8 years, at one time an adult female can give birth to up to 100 fry. Nutrition, small crustaceans, egg yolk can serve as food for babies.

By the year the great suppliers reach maximum sizes.

  • It is the largest representative of the family of the pets, reaching 14-15 centimeters;
  • Velifere mollies are also called sailing fish, because its dorsal fin is very similar in shape to sail;
  • Some aquarists salt the water in the aquarium with table salt, since the salty waters of America are the natural habitat of some varieties of mollies.
