In the natural environment of fish Danio rerio (Danio rerio) dwell in the upper layers of slowly flowing water bodies of the south-eastern part of Asia. Most often, they swim between the stems of aquatic plants and feed on small invertebrates.
These are small fish, 4-5 centimeters long with a long body, along which stripes of two colors are parallel – yellow-green, black-blue, straw-yellow, they start at the gills and move to the tail fin. The females differ about the males with a thicker belly, only the tail and anal fin are colored with stripes, the other fins have a whitish-yellow color. Young representatives of this species have fins short, over time they will grow and form a veil.
In 1960, species such as leopard and pink zebrafish were also recorded.
Even a small aquarium will be suitable for keeping danios, it’s good if it is stretched out in length and its inhabitants have enough space for swimming. Zebrafish prefer to swim in the upper layers – the plants help them to become less visible. As for the temperature, the optimum mode is 21-25 degrees, however, these fish can easily tolerate its gradual decrease.
Weekly you need to change 10-15% of water, the acidity should be 6-7.5, hardness from 3 to 15. Fish love flow, but it is not mandatory.
Zebrafish are interesting because their flock lacks a clear hierarchical structure, so it is sometimes very funny to watch them chasing each other. Representatives of this species feed preferably with live food – daphnia, bloodworms, cyclops, but you can also give them dry food.
These fish get along with any non-aggressive species.
Three spawns are picked up for spawning – 1 female and 2 males, at first the female is upset in a separate aquarium – even a 2-liter jar will suit, and richly fed with live bloodworms and daphnia. Then three fish are planted in the aquarium and line the bottom with small-leaved grass for caviar.
Fishes are planted in the evening, and spawning begins in the morning. After the female has swept up transparent caviar, the fish are removed, and the water temperature rises to 28 degrees, the first fish that need to be given ciliates and microworms hatch within 2-3 days.
• Danio rerio are schooling fish, therefore it is desirable that more than two individuals are in the same aquarium;
• Another zebrafish is called “zebra fish” or even, for fun, “ladies’ stockings”;
• There is a veil form of zebrafish, which is not found in nature, it is an artificial mutation;
• If the fish are frightened, they can start jumping out of the water, so it is desirable that the aquarium be covered with glass.
Danio are in the top of the most unpretentious and popular fish
You can buy Danio-rerio in a specialized nursery. The price of fry Danio-rerio can be found on the bulletin board.
