Clarias (Clarias batrachus) is a predatory catfish, which belongs to the family of the Clarias. The natural habitat is Africa, the Jordan River Basin, Southeast Asia.
Clarias has a characteristic body shape with bright spots, the color of the fish can be varied. Clarias is very similar to the bag-tailed catfish; the only difference is the absence of special bags and the long dorsal fin.
On the first rays of the pectoral fin of the catfish there are spikes, the injections of which are rather painful.
The African catfish Clarias is active mainly at night, in nature it can reach a length of 1 meter, fish contained in an aquarium cannot boast such dimensions: their length varies from 25 to 70 centimeters. Catfish live in the lower layer of water and near the bottom, most often these fish are lonely, but they can also form vapors.
If your catfish have formed a pair, they will spend all the time together, this behavior is typical of very few fish.
Som is a predator, it cannot be kept together with small tropical fish, because after a while they will all be eaten! The minimum size of an aquarium should be 300 liters, fish care is not difficult – it is enough to change 30% of the water weekly, to feed them with dry food or live larvae – members of the catfish family are very voracious.
Water temperature – up to 27 degrees, pH 5.5-8.0.
Fish are ready to breed when they reach a length of 20-30 cm, the catfish that have formed pairs are very aggressive and will defend their territory. In addition to algae and aeration, a cave must be present in the aquarium, otherwise the fish will begin to dig the ground themselves.
In the cave, the female will spawn (up to 1000 eggs). Males protect the clutch, after which the couple is actively involved in the development of babies.
72 hours after spawning, it is better to remove some of the fry, because they grow quickly and will occupy more and more space.
• A distinctive feature of Klarias catfish is its ability to breathe atmospheric air. To do this, the fish has an accessory organ – a modified lung, with which the cat can absorb oxygen;
• African catfish is a predator, in nature it is omnivorous, does not neglect mollusks, vegetable food and garbage;
• Clarias is considered a valuable commercial fish, its weight reaches 60 kg, and some individuals reach a length of 170 cm;
• Som is very pugnacious and will defend its territory in a fight, it can even attack fish that are larger than it. This is especially true for fish during the spawning period.
