Fire Barbus or Puntius (Barbus conchonius) belongs to the carp family. Under natural conditions, it lives in the north-east of India, in stagnant bodies of water or rivers with a slow current.

For the first time the barbs were brought to Europe in 1903, Russian aquarists learned about this fish in 1920.

The fiery barbus has an oval body, slightly compressed from the sides. The fish has no antennae, the head is elongated.

The color of the barb is very bright and beautiful: there is a dark spot near the tail with a golden edging, the back is olive green, but the belly and sides have a fiery coloring, for which the inhabitants of aquariums got their name. The fins are colored copper red, and the tip is black. Males are slimmer and smaller than females, they have a brighter color.

The female before spawning is significantly stout.

Movable peace-loving barbs – schooling fish, it is desirable to keep in the aquarium at least 6 individuals of this species. Mostly barbs are swimming in the lower and middle layers of the water, you can choose different fish as neighbors, except for the void-like and sedentary.

The volume of the aquarium should be at least 60 liters, the lighting is scattered, dimmed. On a dark background, the barbs look very attractive. Take care of shelters, plant the plants to create a shade, small pebbles will be suitable as soil.

Water hardness should not exceed 15, pH – up to 7, the temperature can vary from 17 to 26 degrees.

Filtration and aeration must be present in the aquarium; these fish do not tolerate the lack of oxygen; weekly it is necessary to change up to a third of water. As for food, it is possible to feed representatives of this species with plants (algae, scalded dandelion, spinach or lettuce leaves), live (koretra, bloodworm, daphnia) or dry food.

If the barbus lacks plant food, it will begin to devour aquarium plants.

  • When spawning, females lay up to 500 eggs, after which the producers must be planted, otherwise the offspring will be eaten;
  • These fish reach sexual maturity at 8 months, they can be crossed with an alloplar, scarlet and black barbus, but in the latter case the offspring will be sterile;
  • You can not keep a barb with slow and veil fish, because moving barbs can cripple them;
  • Indeed, the fiery color of this species is acquired during the spawning period. In the aquarium, the fiery barbs live up to 5 years, grow to 8 cm.
