Antsistrus aquarium fish: photo content

Greetings to all on Aquablog. Today I will talk about such a useful aquarium fish Ancistrus ordinary. This catfish was imported to the territory of the former Soviet Union in the seventies.

Homeland habitat of this interesting aquarium inhabitant are tributaries of the great Amazon River. Also, this fish can be found in the Orinoco River.

The last time I talked about such a disease of aquarium fish as kosiosis, you can read about it at this link.

The body of ancistrus ordinary has the form of a flattened drop. Ancistrus has wide bony plates on the body, the head is slightly flattened. Mostly ancistrus have dark gray and light gray color with black and light speck.

In general, the color of fish can vary greatly, sometimes even they can fade. In length, an adult fish can grow up to 10 centimeters.

The mouth of the fish has the appearance of a sucker, the lips are slightly extended, and at the tip of the muzzle the fish have horn-like scrapers, due to which the ancistrus strips fouling from the stones and walls of the aquarium, the leaves of plants and snags. The female from the male can be distinguished by bushy leathery processes on the male’s head.

In ancistrus females, these horny processes are either not developed at all or may be absent altogether. In addition to everything else, males are somewhat more modest than females, they are probably engaged in fitness 🙂

I want to note one interesting feature of Ancistrus – it can get along with almost all types of fish contained in amateur home aquariums.

For antsistrus it is necessary that the aquarium be not less than 50 centimeters long, it is desirable to plant a jar densely with aquarium plants. to create any shelters with the help of logs and stones. It is also possible to use various decorative elements purchased in the store, such as ceramic pipes or locks. I advise you to read the following articles:

Well, in general, you understand me :). It was observed that the peak of activity in ancistrus occurs as a result of a sharp drop in atmospheric pressure in the evening.

The males love to choose a secluded corner for themselves and keep it, driving away all possible competitors from there.

The conditions of ancistrus ordinary quite unpretentious. Under natural conditions, the fish prefers to dwell in subacid and soft water, but as shown by experiments on the content of antsistrusov, the aquarium fish feels great in water with increased hardness. Quite often you can see aquariums, where African cichlids live in one jar.

And as you know, or maybe you do not know, cichlids love silk and hard water. It is advisable that the water in the aquarium where the antsstrases inhabit is well filtered and aerated.

Another interesting point: the water temperature in aqua with antsikami is not particularly important. They can survive perfectly well at 30 degrees and at 18, however, the optimum temperature is 24 degrees. Illumination Ancistrus prefer rather weak.

But as antsistrussy mainly feed on algae, and for them you need a bright light. About the algae in the aquarium you can read here. Therefore, it is necessary to recreate alternately the dark and light phase in aquas, in the intervals between which it is necessary to organize twilight lighting.

Unfortunately, the ancistrus do not live in aquas for a very long time, but the age of 6 years is also considered decent.

What can you say about the feed? This fish can perfectly eat both dry and live food.

But green algae, which cover the walls of aquas, is considered a tasty treat for them. On this, I will finish my post, sometime next time I will write about how to breed ancistrus at home. I hope this post was useful for novice colleagues.

Maybe I missed something, I hope you remind me if anything happens 🙂 By the way, do not forget to subscribe to blog updates and you will be aware of all new publications. And on this I have everything, see you soon, friends.
