Ancistrus gold (albino, aquarium yellow catfish, white): content, compatibility, reproduction, photos, reviews, aquarium, life expectancy

Soma – peaceful and harmless inhabitants of aquariums, most of whose life passes near the bottom. Most often they are painted in modest gray-brown speckled tones and do not attract attention, merging with the bottom. But the golden Ancistrus catfish differs from its counterparts in a bright white and yellow color and is able to overshadow other fish.

Antsistrusy, like other catfish, benefits the aquarium and makes it easier for aquarists to care and cleanse.

Dolichopterus var albino are ray-finned fish belonging to the chain catfish family and the genus Ancistrus. They are also called albino gold or ancistrus gold.

Ancistrus genus includes 69 species, but albinos have gained high popularity due to their unusual color for catfish. The closest relative is ancistrus hoplogenys or star antsistrus.

They live in South and Central America in the Amazon River.

Suitable for beginners aquarists, because the fish is unpretentious and livable to many errors in the care.

Catfish albino different flattened to the bottom of the body with a large head. There are large lips on the head, similar to suckers, and whiskers, with the help of which the fish finds food at the bottom. At the ends of the lips are solid growths that help the soma to eat around solid algae from the stones.

The males on the body and head are solid needles of the skin. According to this “crown”, females determine stronger and more capable males.

Females do not have needles at all or they are of reduced size.

In their natural habitat, the golden Ancistrus catfish is considered to be a rather large fish, reaching a size of 15–17 cm. With aquarium breeding, their size has significantly decreased – it is now difficult to find fish longer than 6 cm.

The color of fish ranges from pale yellow and pink to rich lemon. Though the catfish looks harmless and vulnerable, but it is protected by hard scales.

The fins and tail are transparent with cartilages body color.

Soms have a calm character and a neutral attitude towards other inhabitants. But among the large flock of ancistrus fights occur among males. They differ in territoriality and protect occupied territories.

When keeping one male antsistrus and a pack of several females there is no conflict.

Somik antsistrus golden shows activity with the onset of dusk, and during the day hides in shady places.

Life expectancy in an aquarium is up to 5 years for males, up to 4 years for females.

Settling of catfish in an aquarium does not mean that less care is needed for it and its inhabitants. Catfish do not clean the entire aquarium, but only some types of algae.

Dirt, food debris, fish waste remain in the tank and begin to rot, so the aquarist still has to monitor the cleanliness of the water and replace ¼ of the volume of the aquarium weekly.

Ancistrus gold and a black beard are not eaten.

Antsistrus yellow feels uncomfortable in small and small aquariums. For 3 representatives of the species will require an aquarium of 60 liters. In their natural environment, fish live in cool water with moderate currents and aeration.

In the aquarium you need to create such conditions.

  • The water temperature is 20-24 degrees.
  • Hardness is insensitive, so any values are appropriate.
  • Acidity 6.5–7.6 pH.

Catfish cleaned from the bottom, stones, aquarium walls and plant leaves. Therefore, aquarists are not always sure whether the plants will not be damaged by such cleaning.

But soma is neat in work and most often the leaves remain unharmed. But still you should not plant in the neighborhood with them fragile vegetation with thin foliage, which is easy to damage: cabomba, cinema, peristolitnik.

Soma roots are not prone to dig, but if the rhizomes are poorly buried and close to the surface, but the catfish is accidentally able to dig them out.

Almost all types of aquarium plants are suitable for catfish, but hard-leaved plants with a strong root system will feel best of all:

  • Anubias.
  • Crinum
  • Marsilia.
  • Bolbitis Gedeloti.
  • Windel fern.
  • Atonogeton stiklistny
  • Ekhinodorus Schluter.
  • Lindernia round-leaved.

Soms have highly sensitive antennae with which they find food. Therefore, it is easy to damage them on the sharp edges of stones, snags.

A quality choice of substrate will be small pebbles or gravel, in which the particles are rounded and devoid of chipping. Still suitable river sand.

Do not use large stones as a primer, as food will accumulate and rot in crevices.

If there are few plants in the aquarium or not at all, then for a comfortable living of the aquarium albino you will need to install a filtration system, because they are sensitive to nitrates in water, which is formed during the decomposition of waste and food residues.

The compressor will also not be superfluous, because with a lack of oxygen in the water, the fish floating near the surface are still able to fill it themselves, but the bottom fish feel oxygen starvation. Therefore, to be sure that the catfish always have enough oxygen in the water, it is required to install an aerating device.

Golden catfish is not too sensitive to light, but does not like bright direct rays. A more comfortable option would be diffused light with shaded places, where, if necessary, catfish hide for rest.

In their natural habitat, the ancistrus feeds on algae, the remnants of protein food at the bottom, less often – vegetable food. It is because of their ability to clean the aquarium from algae that aquarists most often get catfish, believing that this allows them to keep their eye on the aquarium less.

Somam needs extra food. When settling in a new aquarium, the ancistrus feeds only on algae, but they quickly clean the aquarium and begin to starve without additional food.

Catfish are picky and feed on frozen, live and dry food. But do not overfeed them with protein food, it adversely affects health. They especially like the pipeker and bloodworm.

But it is still advisable to use frozen food, because so harmful microorganisms die.

White antcistrus has a small mouth, therefore granules and food particles should be of small size. If there are other fish in the aquarium that live in the upper and middle layers of the water, then the catfish may not have enough food that is eaten before it reaches the bottom.

To do this, purchase food specifically for bottom dwellers – it quickly sinks to the bottom.

Like the catfish, especially the young, and plant foods in the diet. Vegetables are more often fed with zucchini, carrots, cucumbers; add salad and spinach leaves.

If plant food is lighter than water and floats to the surface, then it becomes heavier.

Remove uneaten food after 24 hours to prevent the process of decay and decomposition. Ancistrus-albino catfish are fed 1-2 times a day.

Antsistrus albino has a peaceful nature, so it is combined with all the fish that do not harm him. This characteristic includes small and medium fish.

But with territorial, aggressive and predatory fish they have poor livability. Difficulties arise even with the joint maintenance of a pack of catfish with several males.

They will arrange skirmishes and fights for territory and females.

Fish are incompatible with heat-loving fish, because they themselves love the low temperature of the water.

Catfish albino breeds easily, they do not require special conditions. Sometimes it even becomes a problem, because without a lack of control over a pack of catfish, they quickly increase their numbers.

When buying fish for breeding there are 2 ways:

  • Buy a pack of fry and wait until they grow up and form a pair themselves.
  • Buy 2 adult fish, having predetermined their gender in appearance, and wait for offspring.

In the second method, it is advisable not to buy fish from the same aquarium, but choose different points of sale. Indeed, the probability of closely related crossbreeding in the first case is too great and the future offspring may be weak or unviable, especially if the fish are closely interbreeding for several generations.

For breeding, a volume spawning of 50–100 liters with several shelters is required, suitable for laying eggs.

Gender can not be distinguished before adulthood. In adolescent male fish, a clear distinctive feature begins to form – a “crown” on the head of leather outgrowths.

In females, it is absent or manifests itself in the form of small outgrowths at the edges of the head.

The female lays 25–55 eggs in a dark and sheltered place. Caviar ripening takes 4–7 days. The female is removed from the spawn, and the male is left.

In nature, all responsibilities for protecting offspring are transferred to him. The male will not eat until the eggs hatch and get stronger.

When the larvae with the yolk sac become active and begin to explore the world, the male is removed and returned to the main aquarium.

Water in spawning replace 3 times weekly. Feed the fry with crushed bloodworms, shrimp, vegetation.

Fry are resettled to other inhabitants only when their size exceeds 1 cm.

In som antsistrusov not weak health, but some diseases affect them. A frequent cause of diseases is non-observance of cleanliness, hygiene of an aquarium, untimely change of water, rotting of food particles stuck between stones.

Therefore, the best prevention of diseases of the inhabitants of the aquarium – timely cleaning and replacement of water.

In order to determine the worsening state of health of an Ankistrus in time, you need to monitor the condition of your pets every day. If you know in advance the disease, then it is easy to cure.

Symptoms of a sick catfish:

  • Unusual behavior, uncharacteristic actions. Sluggish and inhibited or overly active behavior in combination with other symptoms indicates some disturbances in the body.
  • Color change fish. More often yellow color fades, loses brightness. But this also occurs after the spawning process, so this symptom is inaccurate.
  • Bad appetite or lack of it. A healthy fish is always ready for feeding and swims to the place of food. And the patient remains in the shelter and does not touch the stern.
  • The formation of unhealthy plaque on the skin, scales.

A fish with one or more symptoms is separated from the others. Most often, somas are affected by fin rot, swim bladder disorder and bacterial diseases.

Aquarists are positive about gold anticyrus, because they are unpretentious, peaceful neighbors for other inhabitants. They also allow you to rarely clean the walls of aquariums from algae and easily multiply.

But sometimes there are cases when soma spoil the thin leaves of the plant. Another aquarists are upset that catfish rarely comes to light, all the time hiding in shelters and active only at night.

  • With a pack of content, buy only one male to avoid hassles and fights.
  • When choosing a soil, purchase only run-in and even particles without chips.
  • Install a snag in the aquarium. When cleansing fish, they obtain valuable lignin and cellulose, which are useful for proper digestion.

Aquarium catfish albino is suitable for experienced and beginner aquarists. For beginners, it is undemanding to environmental conditions.

Experienced acquire them to clean the aquarium from algae and a bright appearance.
