Afiosemion krasnotshtrovy: the rules of the content in the aquarium

Among the rather impressive kind of Afiosemionov, which includes unpretentious fish, stands out a special group Katetis, which includes fastidious and aristocratic fish. In appearance, they are not inferior to their more gentle brethren, it is impossible to call them popular, because the breeding and maintenance of these fish is a big problem for most aquarists, including experienced colleagues.

In the waters of North Cameroon and Gabon, one of the smallest Afiosemions belonging to the Kathetys group is found. Adult males grow to 4 centimeters in length, and females even less. Outwardly, these fish are very beautiful: the body is an elongated “pike-shaped” shape, a dorsal fin in the form of a braid, a fan-shaped tail.

The main color is orange with a steel tint and red stripes. The tail has a red edging and a light circular frill.

Females are light brown with dark transverse stripes along the entire body length.

Like other forms of afiosemionov, the red-line “comrade” requires adherence to clear rules. First of all, it concerns an aquarium: its volume should be within 5 – 40 liters, aquarium soil of a dark color, dense planting of various plants and dim diffused lighting.

The water in the aquarium should be soft (dGH within 1.5 – 5), an active reaction of the medium within 6.5 pH and a temperature of 22 – 24 degrees.

When the water temperature rises, the life span of the Afiosemions is greatly reduced, which is already small (maximum two years). When the temperature decreases, the risk of infecting the aquarium with fungal diseases increases.

Together with these afiosemions it is possible to successfully contain medium-sized haracin ones (red and blue neons, rhodostomoses). In this case, the afiosemions will be kept in the upper layer, and the Harazincas will be kept in the lower layer.

Reproduction of the red-barred Afiosemion is a very problematic occupation. A male and a pair of females should be placed for two weeks in a small aquarium without soil, but with small-leaved plants (Anubias nana, Javanese or Christmas moss, ceratopopteris).

Spawning lasts a very long time, during which the female lays caviar in portions on the leaves of aquarium plants.

The term of embryo development is two weeks. Parents of cannibal tendencies towards caviar do not show, but the fry burst at times. As a rule, there are very few eggs, 2-3 females are able to bring no more than 3 dozen eggs.

To provoke fish to spawn, you can add to the aquarium melt water with the following chemical parameters: dGH 0.5 – 2.0; pH 6.5 – 6.8; temperature 24 – 26 degrees.

The young hatched out has a body length of no more than 2 millimeters. Starter feed for fry of Afiosemionov is Artemia nauplii and ciliate-slipper. Aquarists achieved a very good result when feeding young stock on the first day of life with steep egg yolk.

Only you need to monitor the quality of water, it is very spoiled by such feed.

Juveniles grow very slowly and quite a decent waste is observed among such a small number of eggs. As the fry grows, food needs to be diversified, and regular daphnia, tubule and cyclops should be regularly introduced into the diet. But from the moth fish very often refuse, or take it extremely reluctantly.

Sexual maturity of the afiosemion red-barred reaches at the age of 6 months. In the 80s of the last century, this fish was repeatedly imported into our country and even there were recorded cases of successful breeding. However, the popularity of this fish has not received, either because of problems with reproduction, or with the content.

Or maybe there was no competent aquarist who would reveal all the secrets of keeping afiosemion in a home aquarium.
